Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Factors that affect Nevada Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: Nevada’s vast deserts and mountainous terrain can impact shipping costs. Longer distances, such as from Las Vegas to Reno, typically result in higher prices due to increased fuel consumption and time on the road.
  • Route Accessibility: Major highways like I-15 and I-80 make car transport easier and more cost-effective. However, shipping to remote areas off these main routes may increase prices due to additional time and logistics involved.
  • Seasonal Factors: Nevada’s extreme summer heat can affect car shipping prices. During peak tourist seasons in Las Vegas, demand for auto transport services may increase, potentially raising costs.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Nevada’s rugged terrain, may cost more to transport than smaller cars.
  • Transport Method: Open carriers are the most economical option for most vehicles. Enclosed transport, while pricier, offers extra protection from Nevada’s harsh sun and potential dust storms, ideal for luxury or classic cars.
  • Timing: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to better rates. Rush services for quick transport to or from Nevada will typically cost more.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your Nevada car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Nevada car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your car to or from Nevada. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-15, I-80, or US-95. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove all personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of dates for pickup and delivery. The more flexible you are, the better chances of securing a cost-effective auto transport option to or from Nevada.
  • Consider seasonality: Nevada’s extreme summer heat can affect car shipping rates. If possible, schedule your auto transport during milder seasons for potentially lower prices.

Nevada Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to Nevada or moving within the Silver State, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Nevada doesn’t have toll roads, so there’s no need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does require vehicle inspections for emissions in Clark and Washoe counties. New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency.

The Nevada car registration process is straightforward. You’ll need to visit a local DMV office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and identification. Nevada also requires a VIN inspection for out-of-state vehicles. Be prepared for the state’s hot, dry climate by ensuring your vehicle’s cooling system is in top shape before car transport to Nevada.

When settling in Nevada, you’ll need to set up utilities. NV Energy is the primary electricity provider for most of the state, while water services vary by municipality. For internet, major providers include Cox Communications and CenturyLink. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and explore school options if you have children.

If you’re moving away from Nevada, remember to cancel local memberships and set up mail forwarding with USPS. Inform your current utility providers of your move date to avoid unnecessary charges.

Nevada’s unique landscape, from the bustling Las Vegas Strip to the serene Lake Tahoe area, offers diverse experiences. When shipping a car in Nevada, be aware of the state’s major highways like I-15, I-80, and US-95, which connect its sprawling desert regions. Whether you’re moving to enjoy the entertainment capital of the world or the tranquil beauty of the Sierra Nevada, understanding these local nuances will help ensure a smooth transition for both you and your vehicle.

Nevada Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Nevada?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Nevada. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Nevada?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Nevada?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Nevada?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Nevada

When planning car shipping to or from Nevada, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique climate and seasonal factors. Nevada’s diverse landscape, ranging from desert to mountainous regions, presents distinct challenges for auto transport throughout the year.

During summer months, temperatures in Nevada can soar, especially in areas like Las Vegas. If you’re shipping a car during this time, consider these tips:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior from intense heat.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle to prevent melting or damage.
  • Check tire pressure, as extreme heat can cause over-inflation.

Winter brings its own set of challenges, particularly in northern Nevada and mountainous areas:

  • Avoid scheduling car transport with snow tires or chains, as carriers cannot accommodate these.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that may be hazardous in icy conditions.
  • Remove any liquids that might freeze and potentially damage the vehicle.

When it comes to timing your Nevada car shipping, be aware of peak seasons:

  • Summer months see increased demand due to tourism and relocation.
  • Winter can bring challenges in mountainous areas, potentially causing delays.
  • If shipping to college towns like Reno, expect higher rates and longer wait times around the start and end of academic terms.

By considering these factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when using car shipping services in Nevada. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice tailored to your specific route and time of year.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Nevada

When considering car shipping to Nevada for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at major universities. At the University of Nevada, Reno, students need to purchase parking permits, which are available online. Most on-campus housing doesn’t include parking, so plan accordingly. During winter break, long-term parking is available, but spaces are limited. Nevada State College in Henderson offers free parking, but you’ll need to register your vehicle. At University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), parking permits are required and can be purchased online or at the parking office. UNLV also provides secure parking options during breaks. Remember, Nevada’s climate varies greatly between regions. While Las Vegas rarely sees snow, Reno can experience harsh winters. If you’re shipping a car to northern Nevada, consider winter tires for safety. Before transporting your vehicle, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to Nevada. Many auto transport companies offer door-to-door service, making it convenient to have your car delivered directly to your campus or nearby location. Lastly, if you’re planning to ship your car back home during breaks, book your car shipping services well in advance, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability and potentially save on costs.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Nevada

Nevada is home to several military installations, including Nellis Air Force Base and Naval Air Station Fallon. For service members relocating to these bases, understanding the local car shipping and parking situation is crucial. At Nellis AFB, on-base parking is available, but space can be limited. Many military families choose to live in nearby neighborhoods like North Las Vegas, where street parking is generally unrestricted. For those shipping a car to Nevada, it’s important to note that vehicle registration must be completed within 30 days of arrival.

NAS Fallon offers on-base parking, and the surrounding community of Fallon provides ample parking options for those living off-base. When using car shipping services to Nevada, military members should inquire about any special requirements for delivering vehicles to base. Both installations have commissaries and exchanges, offering convenient shopping for military families.

At Sherpa Auto Transport, we understand the unique needs of our service members. That’s why we offer a $50 military discount on our car transport services to and from Nevada. We’re committed to providing reliable auto transport for those who serve our country. Thank you to all military members and their families for your dedication and sacrifice.

“I liked the representative who called me back. I felt comfortable with him and with Sherpa after speaking to him on the phone. My wife dealt with the guys when they showed up at the house to pick up the car. We just pulled the truck out on the street and they loaded it right up. We had a little bit of a communication issue when the driver and I met. I picked out a truck stop that was on the far east side of Sparks, Nevada and he was on one side looking for me and I was on the other side of it looking for him. But that was the only hitch that we had. Everything else went smoothly. That was the first and probably the only time I`ll ever transport a vehicle like that but it was good. I enjoyed the service I got. Sherpa`s people called me at least twice to let me know where the truck was and when I could expect it. It was a fairly painless experience.”

“You can`t go wrong with Sherpa! I admit that I initially placed an order with a different company — two companies actually. Neither could find a driver to transport my brand new Genesis GV70 from NC to NV in an enclosed trailer. I even paid the first company in full, and six days later they hadn`t even tried to find a driver. So eight days after buying a car in NC, I called Sherpa. The Sherpa rep explained the process of basically bidding for a space on a truck, and put me on hold while she looked up the current rate. To put it simply, with a low ball rate, the car is going to sit there. A more competitive rate will get it picked up quicker. I asked her point blank how quickly she thought she could find a driver. She said there was a 96% chance of picking up the car within 4 days. Because I placed the order before noon EDST, she was able to get the order posted that same day. Mind you, this was two days before the July 4th weekend, during a pandemic. Just over 24 hours later I received a call from Mavistar who had accepted the order. And 24 hours after that I received a personal text from the Mavistar driver who confirmed he had picked up my car and would be updating me on his progress as he drove across the country. This driver was AWESOME. He texted or called me every night and updated me on his ETA. Six days after I placed my order, my car was sitting in my driveway in pristine condition. You get what you pay for. If you want budget-level customer service, go with a different company. Sherpa prides itself on doing business the right way, and that they did! I couldn`t be happier with them.”

My vehicle was in mint condition upon arrival and the transport was faster than expected. I would highly recommend Sherpa Transport and if I get too lazy to drive back to Indy I will call them again!”

“Called to schedule for a car pick up and transport from NV to NJ. Was notified in approximately 3 hours that a transport had been secured and pick up would likely happen in 2-3 days…I would get a call 24 hours in advance. Got a call the next morning that pickup would happen the next day in the afternoon. The next day, got a call that pickup would happen between 12-1 pm. Carrier arrived at 12:25 pm. Delivery was estimated to be 4-10 days. Car was delivered 4 days later. Great communication…no issues with pickup or drop off. Would definitely use Sherpa again if the need arises!”

“I originally contacted Wolf Pak Transport as was recommended by the lawyer out in Nevada. Wolf Pak had some issues. So, I then searched online for different transport companies. Sherpa had a good review. They had good ratings. So, I hired them. The person I spoke with on the phone communicated with me quite a bit. I set up the original request, paid it with a credit card, and then I received follow-ups every couple of days until we had a driver lined up. The vehicle was picked up in Henderson, Nevada. It was either on a Friday, and it was delivered to Cromwell, Connecticut on Monday. It was fast. A person who works for the co-administrator handled the pick-up. The driver arrived a day early. They didn`t give us quite enough notice. He said, “I will be there in 20 minutes,†and nobody was there. So, we had to scramble a little bit but earlier is better than not. At the pick-up and drop-off, the driver was great. Overall, Sherpa was fantastic. I had just dealt with Wolf Pak and that was very disappointing, so having everything go very smoothly with Sherpa was wonderful. I couldn`t be happier with their service.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Nevada, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Nevada. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
