Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance and Route: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Mississippi. Routes along major interstates like I-55, I-20, or I-10 are typically more cost-effective than shipping to remote areas.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and affordable option for auto transport in Mississippi. Enclosed transport, while offering protection from weather and road debris, is about 50% more expensive and usually takes longer.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks cost more to ship due to their weight and size. This is particularly relevant when shipping to or from Mississippi, where many residents own larger vehicles.
  • Seasonal Factors: Mississippi’s hot, humid summers can affect car shipping prices. The hurricane season (June to November) may also impact routes and availability, potentially increasing costs.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Shipping to urban areas like Jackson or Gulfport is often cheaper than to rural locations in Mississippi. Consider meeting the carrier in a more accessible location to potentially reduce costs.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates when shipping a car to or from Mississippi. Rush or guaranteed pickup services will increase the price.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading and unloading. Ensure your car is in running condition to avoid additional fees.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Mississippi. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Mississippi car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially bundle your vehicle with others, increasing the chances of a lower rate.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your car to or from Mississippi. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility for negotiating better prices.
  • Consider location: Discuss pickup and dropoff locations with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find spots near major interstates like I-55, I-20, or I-10. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall car shipping price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering flexibility in pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better options and potentially lower costs for your Mississippi auto transport. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times.
  • Leverage off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your car shipping during less busy periods. Avoiding peak moving seasons in Mississippi, such as summer months or college move-in times, can result in more competitive rates for your auto transport needs.

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process to or from Mississippi can be a breeze with the right preparation. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth auto transport experience in the Magnolia State:

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free, instant quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you a clear idea of costs and options for your Mississippi auto transport.

2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car shipping service. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa Auto Transport.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Preparing your car for shipping is crucial. Wash and inspect your vehicle, remove personal items, and ensure it’s in good working condition. Given Mississippi’s humid climate, consider a thorough cleaning to prevent any moisture-related issues during transport.

4. Choose Your Transport Method: Decide between open or enclosed car transport. While open transport is more economical, enclosed might be preferable during Mississippi’s hurricane season (June to November) for added protection.

5. Plan Your Route: Mississippi’s major interstates (I-55, I-20, I-59) make it easily accessible for auto transport. However, be aware that rural areas might require more flexible pickup and delivery locations.

6. Meet the Carrier: Be present (or have a representative) for both pickup and delivery to inspect your vehicle and sign necessary documents.

7. Stay Informed: During transit, keep in touch with your auto transport company for updates on your vehicle’s progress across Mississippi’s diverse landscape, from the Gulf Coast to the Mississippi Delta.

By following these steps and working with a reliable car shipping company, you can ensure a stress-free auto transport experience to or from Mississippi. Remember, proper planning and communication are key to successful car shipping services in the Hospitality State.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to Mississippi or moving within the state, there are several important factors to consider. Mississippi doesn’t have a state-wide toll system, so you won’t need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does have specific vehicle inspection and registration requirements.

New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. The process involves visiting your local county tax collector’s office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and a completed application form. Mississippi also requires an annual safety inspection for most vehicles, which costs $5 and can be done at authorized inspection stations.

When settling in Mississippi, you’ll need to set up utilities. Major electricity providers include Entergy Mississippi and Mississippi Power. For water services, contact your local municipality. Internet providers vary by region but often include AT&T, Xfinity, and C Spire.

To fully integrate into your new community, consider these steps:

  • Register to vote at your county clerk’s office
  • Enroll children in local schools through the district office
  • Obtain a library card at your nearest public library
  • Update your driver’s license at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety

If you’re moving away from Mississippi, remember to:

  • Cancel local memberships and subscriptions
  • Forward your mail through USPS
  • Notify your current utility providers of your move

When using car shipping services in Mississippi, consider the state’s climate. Hot, humid summers and occasional severe weather can affect auto transport. Ensure your chosen car shipping company is prepared for these conditions. Major interstates like I-20, I-55, and I-59 facilitate efficient car transport across the state.

By understanding these local requirements and tips, your move to or from Mississippi will be smoother, whether you’re shipping a car or relocating your entire household.

Mississippi Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Mississippi?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Mississippi. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Mississippi?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Mississippi?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Mississippi?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Mississippi

When planning car shipping to or from Mississippi, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique seasonal weather patterns. Mississippi experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters, which can impact your auto transport experience. During summer months, temperatures can soar, making it essential to prepare your vehicle for car shipping services. Consider placing a sunshade under your windshield to protect the interior from excessive heat. Also, remove any heat-sensitive items from your car to prevent melting or damage during transport.

While winters are generally mild in Mississippi, occasional cold snaps and rare snowfall can occur. If you’re scheduling Mississippi car shipping during winter, ensure your vehicle is winter-ready but avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers cannot transport vehicles with them installed. Additionally, be mindful of potential icy conditions when selecting pickup and drop-off locations, avoiding steep inclines for the safety of the transport truck.

Spring and fall in Mississippi bring their own considerations for those looking to ship a car. Spring can be particularly rainy, so make sure your vehicle is leak-free before transport. Fall is often an ideal time for car transport in Mississippi, with mild temperatures and less extreme weather.

Beyond weather, consider timing your car shipping around peak periods in Mississippi. If you’re near college towns like Oxford or Starkville, expect increased demand for auto transport services at the beginning and end of academic semesters. Planning your car shipping a few weeks before or after these busy periods can lead to more flexible scheduling and potentially lower rates.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient experience when using car shipping services in Mississippi. Remember, a little preparation goes a long way in making your auto transport journey hassle-free and successful.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Mississippi

When planning to ship a car to Mississippi for college, it’s crucial to consider parking logistics at universities. Most campuses in Mississippi require parking permits, which students can usually purchase online or at the campus police department. For instance, at the University of Mississippi, students must register their vehicles and display a valid parking decal. Similarly, Mississippi State University operates a color-coded parking system with specific zones for students, faculty, and staff.

Many off-campus apartments near Mississippi universities offer parking spaces, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. On-campus dorms typically have designated parking lots, but spaces may be limited. During winter breaks, most Mississippi universities allow students to leave their vehicles on campus, often in specific long-term parking areas.

While Mississippi doesn’t typically require snow tires, students should prepare for occasional ice and heavy rain. It’s wise to check your vehicle’s tires and brakes before the car transport to ensure they’re in good condition for local weather. Additionally, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to Mississippi, especially if you’re coming from out of state.

If you’re using car shipping services to bring your vehicle to Mississippi, coordinate the delivery with your move-in date and ensure you have a temporary parking solution if needed. Remember, a reliable car shipping company can make your transition to college life in Mississippi much smoother, allowing you to focus on your studies rather than logistics.

Consumer Affairs

“Things worked out very well. On the form with the people Sherpa subcontracted with, it said, “We don’t cover glass issues.” With an open truck going down a highway, there’s a risk on the glass, and wouldn’t you know, our front windshield got cracked. My insurance covered everything but $50, then Toyota recommended also changing the windshield wiper blades, and Sherpa reimbursed me for my cost entirely. I was impressed with that. Overall, we were happy the first time we got Sherpa, so I called them again to know what it would cost to ship a car from Venice Honda up to Vicksburg Honda in Mississippi.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The quote I was given was the amount I paid! Car was picked up and delivered by the next day, from South Mississippi to West Tx. I ordered opened bed but the guy who picked it up had a closed bed trailer, that was even better. Got my free car wash another winner! Great service!”

“Great service! I would definitely use again.”

Consumer Affairs

“When I reached out to Sherpa, I was able to align on an agreement and we carried forward with it. It was the most professional and efficient service that I had received, even though I don’t generally use car carrier services. It very experienced. They did a 360° inspection of the vehicle prior to it being touched by them and then included also looking at the interior, making sure that everything functioned prior to touching it and moving it on to their rig. The cost in relation to quality of service was very, very adequate. If I had another need for transporting vehicles, I would definitely utilize them again.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had a great experience with this auto shipping company. I recieved exceptional door-to-door service at a reasonable price. My carrier was prompt and professional with the care in which he provided to my vehicle. I plan to ship my car back and will highly consider reusing this company again.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Mississippi, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Mississippi. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
