Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The distance between Mason, MI and your destination greatly affects car shipping costs. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the per-mile rate often decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Mason, MI. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Michigan’s harsh winters and potential road debris.
  • Location Accessibility: Mason’s proximity to major highways like I-96 and US-127 can help reduce costs. However, if you’re shipping to a more remote area, consider arranging pickup or delivery in a larger nearby city like Lansing for potential savings.
  • Seasonal Factors: Michigan’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter months may see higher rates due to challenging road conditions, while summer tends to be peak season for auto transport, potentially increasing costs.
  • Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your vehicle affect shipping costs. Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs common in Michigan, may cost more to transport than standard cars.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window, such as Sherpa’s five-day option, can lead to more competitive pricing for your Mason car shipping needs. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come at a premium.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Mason, MI. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Mason, MI car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping is more cost-effective than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates while still providing reliable auto transport services.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Discuss with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors about convenient locations near major highways like I-96 or US-127. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall car shipping price.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about personal belongings during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates. Carriers may offer discounts for shipments that fit well into their existing schedules.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer. Shipping your car to or from Mason, MI during off-peak times may result in lower rates due to reduced demand.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When planning car shipping to or from Mason, MI, it’s crucial to understand local regulations and prepare for your move. Michigan doesn’t have toll roads, so you won’t need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does require vehicle inspections for safety and emissions, especially when registering an out-of-state vehicle. To register your car in Michigan, you’ll need proof of ownership, a valid driver’s license, and proof of Michigan no-fault insurance.

Mason’s climate can be challenging for vehicles, with cold winters and occasional heavy snowfall. When using auto transport services, ensure your car is winter-ready if moving during colder months. For local driving, consider investing in snow tires and keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle.

When settling in Mason, you’ll need to set up utilities. Consumers Energy provides electricity and natural gas, while the City of Mason handles water and sewer services. For internet, popular providers include AT&T and Spectrum. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if you have children, enroll them in Mason Public Schools.

If you’re moving away from Mason, remember to:

  • Cancel local memberships (e.g., Mason Community Center)
  • Forward your mail through USPS
  • Return your library card to the Mason Public Library
  • Notify the Secretary of State of your address change

Whether you’re using car shipping services to move to or from Mason, MI, planning ahead is key. Research reliable car transport companies that are familiar with Mason’s location near I-96 and US-127. These major highways make Mason easily accessible for auto transport, ensuring a smooth transition for you and your vehicle to your new home.

Mason, Michigan Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Mason?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Mason. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Mason?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Mason?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Mason?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“We thought we’d transport a car. I was scared to death of the idea. I read all the horror stories – cars falling off trucks, cars coming full of mud, dents, whatever. I researched the heck out of it. I went through 15 transports, and read their stuff online. Sherpa`s presentation online was good. It was convincing. It was humble in the sense of the reality of the whole car transport business. The fact that you`re not dealing initially with the driver, you`re dealing with a broker. Most people are not familiar with doing this and don`t understand the difference between a trucker and a broker. That`s the scary part. And that`s what Sherpa covered so well. And in service, I never had to sit on hold with them if I had a question. It was the same with talking to the truckers. They were very cool and sharp, and they did the job. The car was picked up exactly where and when we expected. The two young drivers were neat. They shuffled the cars around to get them in the order they needed them. We watched them do it very carefully in moving cars in and out. And off they went. It disappeared in Phoenix, Arizona. Our family members were here already in Michigan when the car arrived. It arrived at exactly the right time. A family of ours picked the car up. The driver called ahead, said, ‘Here`s when we expect to be there.’ Rolled the car off the truck. And with the most thorough examination, it was obvious the car suffered no damage, no dents. It was no worse for wear at all. The price of Sherpa was higher than some of the other offers. But what we read was, in this business, you get what you pay for. The offer goes up online and drivers get a choice of whether they want to take it or not. And if the price is low, the car can sit there forever until some desperate driver decides he just needs another buck. If you put a decent price up there on the board that is attractive to a good driver, then you get what you pay for. That’s what we discovered. That with Sherpa, even though they were putting a higher price up on the board to get a driver, we got the right one. We got guys that got our car from point A to point B on time, in its original shape. If we were to do this again, and we may, Sherpa would be the first choice. I was very impressed. Our old Corolla was sitting next to a sports car that was 100 times what our car was worth. And I figured, ‘Well, if they`re gonna transport that car, they can take my Corolla.’ As long as Sherpa’s in business, and they are there to grab my car and take it where I need it to go, I would do it. Most other people are first-timers with trucking a car. And if that`s the case, I would say, ‘Give Sherpa a try.’ And don`t expect that it`s going to be cheap. The sense of relief when that car came off the truck was worth it.”

“Writing a review because I relied heavily on these while deciding which broker company to go with to find someone to transport my car from Utah to Michigan. Some background information…I am a gal in my early 20`s that has NO IDEA how these things work. So if you are in the same position as me, this review is for you haha. I first decided to go through with another company who ended up not being authorized which made me extremely nervous while looking for a new company. I found Sherpa on Forbes and after reading the reviews and seeing that if the car doesn`t get picked up by a driver towards the end of the 5 day period you agree on, they contribute their own money, I decided to go through with Sherpa. One thing I learned is to never put down a down payment with a broker. This is apparently a sketchy practice. Sherpa DOES ask for a card to be on file, but they DO NOT charge it until they find someone to pick up your car. In my case, they contributed $150 of the $300 broker fee towards the payment for the actual driver so I ended up paying Sherpa $150 dollars. I will say, I was nervous that my car wouldn`t get picked up within the 5 day time period, but Sherpa found a driver on the 4th day and it was picked up that same day. They stayed in communication with the company that transported my car the entire way. I would 100% use Sherpa again in the future if I need to transport my car somewhere. I am going to shift to the company Sherpa found for me now to transport my car. The company was Union Five, and they were also amazing. My car arrived in one piece which I am very happy about. On the expected day of drop off (2 days after picking it up and a cross country drive which is impressive), their truck broke down. They then expected the car to be delivered two days later. This was no problem as it was very much still in the expected delivery date range. Both the company and Sherpa notified me of this situation. However Union Five managed to get it onto another truck and it was delivered that night. One thing I learned from this process is that you need to be flexible. I received a phone call 15 minutes prior to pick up and 45 minutes prior to drop off so be ready at all times within the date range for pick up and delivery. Also, if the truck is too big to pick up/drop off your car on your street, expect to meet somewhere nearby. Overall, I had an amazing experience with both Sherpa and Union Five. It was important to me to not be scammed and for my car to make it in one piece. I communicated this with both companies and fortunately I received the same communication and respect back.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Mason, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Michigan. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
