Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Holland customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Everything went great. Everyone was nice and everything was right on time. My car was dirty but it was fine. The rep was awesome. She was nice and understanding. I was running a few minutes late and she was very nice with it. She didn`t get an attitude like some people would. The driver was awesome too and the quote was right on point. They told me $1,200 – $200 deposit and $1,000 at pickup, and that`s exactly what it was.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was an easy group to work with. They kept us in communication of when they were looking for a driver and when they found one. Communication all the way through it all was really easy. Also, the pick-up and delivery went very smooth, and the cost was very good. Sherpa set a price and kept with that price. Overall, they were were very helpful, communicative and did very good work.”

Google
★★★★★

“I found Sherpa on Forbes and after reading the reviews and seeing that if the car doesn`t get picked up by a driver towards the end of the 5 day period you agree on, they contribute their own money, I decided to go through with Sherpa. One thing I learned is to never put down a down payment with a broker. This is apparently a sketchy practice. Sherpa DOES ask for a card to be on file, but they DO NOT charge it until they find someone to pick up your car. In my case, they contributed $150 of the $300 broker fee towards the payment for the actual driver so I ended up paying Sherpa $150 dollars.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey is a key factor in Holland car shipping costs. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but routes along major highways like I-196 or US-31 can be more cost-effective.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks cost more to ship than compact cars due to their weight and size. This is especially important when considering Holland’s diverse vehicle needs, from city commuters to outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and affordable option for car shipping to Holland, MI. Enclosed transport offers extra protection from Michigan’s varied weather but costs about 50% more and may have longer delivery times.
  • Seasonal Factors: Auto transport costs can fluctuate with the seasons in Holland. Winter weather conditions and summer tourism peaks can affect pricing and availability of car shipping services.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas in Holland are generally cheaper for car shipping than rural locations. Consider meeting your carrier near major roads like US-31 for potential savings.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to ship. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost of auto transport to or from Holland.
  • Timing Flexibility: If you can be flexible with your pickup and delivery dates, you may find better rates for shipping a car to Holland. Rush or guaranteed delivery services typically cost more.

Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your car shipping needs in Holland, MI. For a more detailed breakdown of costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Holland, Michigan Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Holland?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Holland. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Holland?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Holland?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Holland?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Holland

When scheduling car shipping to or from Holland, MI, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Holland experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

In winter, Holland sees substantial snowfall, often exceeding 70 inches annually. This means:

  • Avoid scheduling car shipping with snow tires installed, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with chains.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that can be treacherous in icy conditions.
  • Remove or properly insulate any items in your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage your car during transport.

Summer in Holland is generally mild, but temperatures can occasionally spike. If shipping a car during warmer months:

  • Consider placing a sunshade under the windshield to protect your car’s interior.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle to prevent melting or damage.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial for efficient car transport in Holland, MI. The city experiences peak shipping periods, particularly:

  • Late August to early September, when students return to nearby colleges like Hope College.
  • Late April to early May, coinciding with the end of the academic year.
  • During the famous Tulip Time Festival in May, which attracts numerous visitors.

To avoid potential delays and higher costs, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after these peak periods. By planning around Holland’s unique seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother, more cost-effective car shipping experience.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Holland, Michigan

When considering car shipping to Holland, Michigan for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation. Hope College, the main institution in Holland, requires students to register their vehicles and purchase a parking permit. On-campus parking is available, but spaces can be limited. Most off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s wise to confirm this before signing a lease. For winter breaks, students can leave their cars on campus, but it’s advisable to inform campus security. Holland’s snowy winters make snow tires a smart investment for student drivers. Before shipping your car, ensure your auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage are valid in Michigan. If you’re unsure about car transport options, consider using a reputable car shipping company to safely move your vehicle. Remember, shipping a car to college can provide convenience, but it also comes with responsibilities. Plan ahead and research thoroughly to make your college car experience in Holland smooth and stress-free.

“Only one review?? Wow, that sucks because I would’ve sworn this company was one of the most credible. I was making a big move from Michigan to California fresh out of college. Young, scared, and confused, I often found myself overwhelmed with the many vehicle transport options available. Frantically, I googled “best auto transport companies for cross-country moves” and stumbled upon Sherpa in a Forbes article. After retrieving a quote for nearly every company in the article, I instantly put Sherpa at the top of my list because of their promised flat-rate policy. If you have experience shipping a car, you know how great this is. Shortly after, I received a phone call from a very lovely worker who offered me a much appreciated rebate if I chose to go with them instead of other companies I was considering at the time. He also explained the entire process very thoroughly which was very helpful for my young, confused mind. I instantly felt like I would be in good hands leaving my precious baby in the hands of a stranger for 5 days to a week, and this feeling held true throughout the entire process. The company they partnered with (Spark Prime Logistics, in my case) handled my car with the upmost care and she actually arrived in better condition than when I left her (broken trunk hatch issue…maybe the desert heat helped? idk, but I’m not complaining lol). My carrier wouldn’t even pull into a residential street to avoid scratching anyone’s vehicle. Instant approval. I trust that Sherpa would only partner the best of the best to get the job done. All in all, I am absolutely pleased with Sherpa and would confidently say that I’d instantly go to them if I ever again decide to make another crazy man’s move across states. No more searching. Sherpa for the win!”

Google

“Smoothest transaction I have ever had. Being my first transport, I didn’t know what to expect. Sherpa brokers out their deliveries and only uses the most reputable drivers with highest ins policies. I compared prices with two other companies and they were by far the most reasonable. From beginning to end, the process was flawless. Thank you to Doug for getting my son’s vehicle from Arizona to Michigan. I think it only took 3 days. Will definitely use them again. So pleased with their professionalism and customer service.”

“Very smooth process shipping my car from Houston to Michigan using Sherpa! I had a complicated schedule where someone else was at the pickup location to drop off my car and I was arriving at DTW airport at the same time my car was supposed to arrive. The timing worked out perfectly as I was able to pick my car up right after I landed. I highly recommend using Sherpa for transporting your car across the country. It was very convenient and affordable!”

“At about 9:30 on Tuesday morning, we placed our telephone order with Sherpa to transport our damaged vehicle from Jonesville, NC to Dundee, MI. The vehicle was picked up from the tow yard within two hours, and by 8:30 the following morning, it was dropped off at the destination in Michigan, at the price we were quoted. We could not have been happier with Sherpa!”

Google
★★★★★

“We decided at the last minute (a week prior) that we wanted our car transported -vs- driving from California to Michigan. The price was very reasonable – actually less than driving cross country. Communication was very good from both Sherpa and the driver. Car was picked up on a Tuesday and delivered Sunday afternoon with no issues. Highly recommend!”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Holland, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Michigan. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
