- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Detroit customers say about Sherpa:
“I was a bit nervous with shipping my car because I had seen so many reviews for auto transport brokers having poor communication between carriers and customers. However, things were completely different with Sherpa! Sherpa emailed me and left a voice message at the start of my requested shipping window with the carrier information. The communication between Aline, my mother, and me was outstanding. We were able to arrange times that worked best for all of us via group text message. I even had a complicated travel scenario where I was landing at DTW airport around the same time the carrier was arriving near Detroit, so the carrier and I texted back and forth to schedule the pickup at a location by the airport.”
“I was making a big move from Michigan to California fresh out of college. Young, scared, and confused, I often found myself overwhelmed with the many vehicle transport options available. Frantically, I googled “best auto transport companies for cross-country moves” and stumbled upon Sherpa in a Forbes article. After retrieving a quote for nearly every company in the article, I instantly put Sherpa at the top of my list because of their promised flat-rate policy. If you have experience shipping a car, you know how great this is.”
“I had a great experience with Sherpa Auto Transport when they shipped the 2012 Toyota Camry over a few thousand miles. The quote they provided was competitive. It was the same as what the other transport companies were offering, but they were a lot better than the others when I went online and saw their reviews. The final cost was the same as the quote that they had originally quoted. They also gave me a $100 rebate which was in the copy of the bill. The customer service reps were A1 and everything with them was smooth.”

Factors that affect Detroit Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Detroit. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile often decreases for longer trips.
- Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than smaller cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
- Transport Type: Open transport is the most common and affordable option for car shipping to Detroit. Enclosed transport, while pricier, offers extra protection from weather and road debris, which can be beneficial during Michigan’s harsh winters.
- Season: Auto transport prices to Detroit can fluctuate based on the time of year. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter shipping might be affected by snow and ice on major routes like I-75 and I-94.
- Fuel Prices: Fluctuations in fuel costs can impact car shipping rates to and from Detroit. Higher gas prices may lead to increased transport fees.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to ship. Inoperable cars may require special equipment for loading, increasing the cost.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Terminal-to-terminal shipping is often cheaper than door-to-door service. However, Detroit’s central location and good highway access can help keep costs reasonable for door-to-door options.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your car shipping to or from Detroit more effectively. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Detroit car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially bundle your vehicle with others, increasing the chances of a lower rate.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the most competitive prices. While enclosed transport is necessary for some vehicles, open carriers offer more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major interstates like I-75 or I-94. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your overall auto transport price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates any liability concerns for the car shipping company.
- Be flexible: Offering a range of dates for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider various locations around Detroit, such as nearby suburbs, to potentially reduce your car transport costs.
- Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to and from Detroit can be affected by weather conditions. Planning your shipment during milder seasons may offer more competitive pricing and smoother logistics.

Detroit Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to or from Detroit, MI, it’s crucial to be aware of local regulations and practical considerations. Detroit’s harsh winters can impact car transport, so scheduling your auto transport during milder seasons is advisable. Michigan doesn’t use a traditional toll system, so there’s no need to remove toll readers. However, the state does require all vehicles to pass a basic safety inspection before registration.
For those moving to Detroit, the vehicle registration process is straightforward. Visit a Secretary of State office within 30 days of your move, bringing proof of ownership, insurance, and identification. You’ll need to obtain a Michigan driver’s license within this timeframe as well. Parking in Detroit often requires permits in residential areas, so check with your local district office upon arrival.
When settling in Detroit, set up utilities promptly. DTE Energy provides electricity, while the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department handles water services. For internet, major providers include Comcast and AT&T. Don’t forget to register to vote at your local clerk’s office and enroll children in the Detroit Public Schools Community District if applicable.
If you’re leaving Detroit, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail via USPS, and notify relevant parties of your address change. For both incoming and outgoing moves, a reputable car shipping company can ease the transition, handling your vehicle while you focus on other aspects of relocation.
Detroit’s extensive highway system, including I-75, I-94, and I-96, facilitates efficient car shipping services. However, be prepared for potential delays due to ongoing road improvements. When choosing a Detroit car shipping provider, opt for one familiar with the city’s layout and weather conditions to ensure a smooth transport experience.
Detroit, Michigan Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Detroit?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Detroit. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Detroit?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Detroit?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Detroit?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Detroit
When planning car shipping to or from Detroit, MI, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Detroit experiences distinct seasons, each with unique challenges for auto transport.
Winter Considerations: Detroit winters can be harsh, with heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re scheduling car shipping services during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t move vehicles with these installed.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping in icy conditions.
- Avoid leaving items that may freeze and expand in your vehicle.
Summer Precautions: While not as extreme as some regions, Detroit summers can be warm. When shipping a car during summer months:
- Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior.
- Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp.
Peak Seasons: Detroit car shipping demand fluctuates throughout the year. Be aware of these busy periods:
- Late August to early September: College students returning to nearby universities.
- May to June: End of academic year and start of summer internships.
- November and April: Snowbirds moving to and from warmer climates.
To avoid higher rates and potential delays during these peak times, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after these periods. By planning around Detroit’s seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother, more cost-effective car transport experience.
Car Shipping for College Students in Detroit, Michigan
When considering car shipping to Detroit for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at local universities. Wayne State University requires parking permits for on-campus lots, while University of Detroit Mercy offers free parking with registration. Most dorms don’t include parking, so plan accordingly. For winter breaks, check if your school provides long-term storage options. Detroit’s harsh winters necessitate snow tires, so factor this into your auto transport decision. Before shipping your car, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to Michigan. If you’re unsure about car transport logistics, consider using a reputable car shipping company familiar with Detroit’s unique needs. They can advise on the best time for shipping a car to avoid weather-related delays. Remember, proper planning ensures a smooth transition to college life in the Motor City.
Reviews from our Michigan Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Michigan customers:
“Writing a review because I relied heavily on these while deciding which broker company to go with to find someone to transport my car from Utah to Michigan. Some background information…I am a gal in my early 20’s that has NO IDEA how these things work. So if you are in the same position as me, this review is for you haha. I first decided to go through with another company who ended up not being authorized which made me extremely nervous while looking for a new company. I found Sherpa on Forbes and after reading the reviews and seeing that if the car doesn’t get picked up by a driver towards the end of the 5 day period you agree on, they contribute their own money, I decided to go through with Sherpa. One thing I learned is to never put down a down payment with a broker. This is apparently a sketchy practice. Sherpa DOES ask for a card to be on file, but they DO NOT charge it until they find someone to pick up your car. In my case, they contributed $150 of the $300 broker fee towards the payment for the actual driver so I ended up paying Sherpa $150 dollars. I will say, I was nervous that my car wouldn’t get picked up within the 5 day time period, but Sherpa found a driver on the 4th day and it was picked up that same day. They stayed in communication with the company that transported my car the entire way. I would 100% use Sherpa again in the future if I need to transport my car somewhere.”
“Very smooth process shipping my car from Houston to Michigan using Sherpa! I had a complicated schedule where someone else was at the pickup location to drop off my car and I was arriving at DTW airport at the same time my car was supposed to arrive. The timing worked out perfectly as I was able to pick my car up right after I landed. I highly recommend using Sherpa for transporting your car across the country. It was very convenient and affordable!”
“I saw really great reviews for Sherpa and there was nothing that stood out to me that made me want to deter from them. I had a good feeling just from reading the reviews and the company history. They were the better option. I filled out a form online and within a few hours, I received an email stating that they could help me further make my decision on everything else. It was a good experience and the salespeople were not pushy. The customer support helped me. I was able to get the shipment place and everything during that call, so everything was handled. Sherpa offered multiple options for the transport and I chose the uncovered one. I was quoted a higher price for the service. I spoke to a representative and they noticed that the year of my car was wrong so they changed that and I got a lower price. That was really good. I really like the price lock too. I wasn’t able to pay over the phone and I was able to hold that amount for a few days until I was able to pay for that shipment. That was really helpful. I really liked that I was able to keep the new quoted amount. The car was transported from Florida to Michigan and the delivery was very fast. The car came within two or three days. And the delivery service was very friendly. They kept me updated throughout the entire time. When the car got here, they gave me a rundown. It was my first time seeing this car as I purchased it. They made sure I took pictures if there were any issues. I liked the process through and through. I would tell others to check out the Sherpa website, fill out the forms and appropriate things for the vehicle that they need. I have recommended them to my friends and I would definitely tell them to check it out.”
“As far as Sherpa’s customer service, the young man and the young lady that took care of me were very helpful. They explained everything to us. We had about a three-week window and the driver came over just when the consultant told me he was gonna come. The driver called us. Right after that, he came over right when he said he was gonna come over. We watched him load the car up. He was very careful, professional, and told us he was gonna get the car down there the date that he said he was gonna get the car down there. He did. I really like that they told me that, “Well, if it’s more money than what we’re quoting, you will pay for it.” I also like that they didn’t come back to me and nickel and dime me every time. A couple of people I know that did have their car shipped had to come up with extra money after they were quoted a price, and I did like that I didn’t have to do that. They told me, “This is what it was”, and that was what it was.”
“Sherpa Auto Transport did an amazing job delivering our car from Va. to Mi. They were very upfront about the costs (which were very good). They gave us a time frame and they delivered the car right on time! The person I spoke with who worked to set up our driver explained time frames, prices, our driver, insurance on our car, everything we needed to know. Our driver was on time! He was very nice, he did an excellent job loading and unloading the car! Great Company to work with!”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Detroit, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Michigan. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
