Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

“Writing a review because I relied heavily on these while deciding which broker company to go with to find someone to transport my car from Utah to Michigan. Some background information…I am a gal in my early 20’s that has NO IDEA how these things work. So if you are in the same position as me, this review is for you haha.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I live in Michigan and we come to Florida for the winter. I’ve been shipping cars for the last three or four years. I checked online and looked in terms of which ones got very good reviews and had other ratings. I was doing a lot of checking because the previous year, I had some difficulty with the company I used.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa did a tremendous job. The transport was for my son and when I filled out the form, people immediately got back with me. There was a little bit of a mix up when the car needed to be delivered and picked up. It was 7 o’clock in the evening when I called them and they called me right back and got it all straightened out.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Ann Arbor, MI. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, as fuel costs and driver time increase.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Ann Arbor. Enclosed trailers, while offering more protection, are about 50% more expensive and usually take longer for delivery.
  • Location Accessibility: Ann Arbor’s proximity to major highways like I-94 and US-23 can help keep shipping costs down. Urban areas are generally cheaper to ship to than rural locations.
  • Seasonal Factors: Ann Arbor’s weather can affect car shipping prices. Winter snowfall may increase costs due to challenging road conditions, while summer is peak season for auto transport, potentially raising prices.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Also, inoperable cars are pricier to transport as they require special equipment for loading and unloading.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive pricing for your Ann Arbor car shipping needs. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come at a premium.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Ann Arbor car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.

  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-94 or US-23. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider various locations around Ann Arbor, such as nearby Ypsilanti or Saline, for potential cost savings.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to/from Ann Arbor may be more affordable during off-peak seasons when demand is lower, typically avoiding the start and end of university semesters.

Ann Arbor, Michigan Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Ann Arbor?

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Ann Arbor?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

“Only one review?? Wow, that sucks because I would`ve sworn this company was one of the most credible. I was making a big move from Michigan to California fresh out of college. Young, scared, and confused, I often found myself overwhelmed with the many vehicle transport options available. Frantically, I googled “best auto transport companies for cross-country moves” and stumbled upon Sherpa in a Forbes article. After retrieving a quote for nearly every company in the article, I instantly put Sherpa at the top of my list because of their promised flat-rate policy. If you have experience shipping a car, you know how great this is. Shortly after, I received a phone call from a very lovely worker who offered me a much appreciated rebate if I chose to go with them instead of other companies I was considering at the time. He also explained the entire process very thoroughly which was very helpful for my young, confused mind. I instantly felt like I would be in good hands leaving my precious baby in the hands of a stranger for 5 days to a week, and this feeling held true throughout the entire process. The company they partnered with (Spark Prime Logistics, in my case) handled my car with the upmost care and she actually arrived in better condition than when I left her (broken trunk hatch issue…maybe the desert heat helped? idk, but I`m not complaining lol). My carrier wouldn`t even pull into a residential street to avoid scratching anyone`s vehicle. Instant approval. I trust that Sherpa would only partner the best of the best to get the job done. All in all, I am absolutely pleased with Sherpa and would confidently say that I`d instantly go to them if I ever again decide to make another crazy man`s move across states. No more searching. Sherpa for the win!”

“I`m in Canada and I have a daughter in the US. I had a vehicle in the US that I wanted to return to Canada. It is a Canadian vehicle. My daughter moved to New York City and she didn`t want the vehicle anymore so I repatriated it to Canada. I googled the top transport companies because I know the margins are very tight and it`s highly competitive so a few extra dollars give you probably a better service. I looked at the reviews on Sherpa. The fellow I spoke with mentioned that Sherpa also was cited by Forbes magazine as the top transport company in ‘˜22 and that made a big impression on me because Forbes magazine does its research. He also told me to be aware of having those little scanners on your car that charges a toll fee for the Pikepass. He was the only one who mentioned removing those from the vehicle. Otherwise, I would incur the toll charges throughout the transport. I was impressed by that. It felt honest and professional. The pickup was in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the drop-off was in Coleville, Washington. The driver kept in contact with me. I had given him a narrow last few kilometer routes that would have been difficult and before I even contacted him to tell him, ‘No, take the alternative route that truckers take,’ he had already offloaded the vehicle and borrowed just a single vehicle hauler and he brought it up that way. I was impressed. Another thing that made a huge impact on me was there was a very tight window. I opened the window up to five days from three days, and the woman on the phone told me right away, ‘Well, you get $200 off.’ I didn`t know that, and they actually took it off my bill. I was very impressed. They didn’t have to do that. They`re professional and honest.”

“I’ve never transported a car before. The process was easy, and when I called a couple of times, they were helpful and courteous. The actual driver was awesome! My car was the last to unload, so they drove the car straight to my door!”

“Smoothest transaction I have ever had. Being my first transport, I didn’t know what to expect. Sherpa brokers out their deliveries and only uses the most reputable drivers with highest ins policies. I compared prices with two other companies and they were by far the most reasonable. From beginning to end, the process was flawless. Thank you to Doug for getting my son’s vehicle from Arizona to Michigan. I think it only took 3 days. Will definitely use them again. So pleased with their professionalism and customer service.”

Google
★★★★★

“Very smooth process shipping my car from Houston to Michigan using Sherpa! I had a complicated schedule where someone else was at the pickup location to drop off my car and I was arriving at DTW airport at the same time my car was supposed to arrive. The timing worked out perfectly as I was able to pick my car up right after I landed. I highly recommend using Sherpa for transporting your car across the country. It was very convenient and affordable!”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Ann Arbor, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Michigan. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
