- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Michigan customers say about Sherpa:
“I live on a dead-end road in a little city, and the guy that came parked on the street. He had five other cars on his hauler and he stayed there all night. Before I went to bed at 10 o’clock, he had the cars off that truck four different times and put them back on. The guy said he balanced his load, which was fine. There was no damage to our car. However, that was odd because he had to keep taking those cars off and putting them back on.”
“I had contact via text saying that the driver picked up the truck, and I was given an approximate time and date that they would be here. I told the driver where to deliver it because of room limitations, and they agreed to that, then they let me know that they were so many minutes out from my home. They were very forthright with their communication.”
“Sherpa was awesome. They had a good quote and they came through with what was promised. The pickup was in Michigan, while drop-off was in California, and it was about a week. They emailed me updates, then eventually, they texted me how to reach the driver. We made a drop-off date, time, and location and it worked out.”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Michigan Car Shipping Prices
- Distance and Route: Michigan’s location in the Upper Midwest affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from Detroit to Florida, will be more expensive than shorter routes. The state’s extensive highway system, including I-75, I-94, and I-96, can help reduce costs for shipments along major corridors.
- Seasonal Factors: Michigan’s harsh winters can impact car shipping prices. Snow and ice may cause delays or require special equipment, potentially increasing costs. Summer months often see higher demand for auto transport services, which can also affect pricing.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle influence shipping costs. A compact car will typically cost less to ship than a large SUV or truck. Michigan’s auto industry means a higher volume of new car shipments, which can affect overall market rates.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most common and affordable option for car shipping to or from Michigan. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection and may be preferred for luxury or classic cars, especially during winter months.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas like Detroit, Grand Rapids, or Lansing often have lower shipping costs due to easier access. Rural locations in the Upper Peninsula may incur higher fees due to limited carrier availability.
- Timing and Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can help reduce costs. Peak moving seasons, such as summer or the start of the college year, may see higher prices due to increased demand.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your Michigan car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Michigan car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Consider location: Discuss pickup and drop-off points with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors. Locations near major Michigan interstates like I-75, I-94, or I-96 can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your quote.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of dates for pickup and delivery. Flexibility can help you secure better rates and options for your Michigan auto transport needs.
- Avoid peak seasons: If possible, schedule your car shipping outside of busy periods like summer or major holidays. Off-peak shipping can often result in more competitive pricing.

Michigan Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to or from Michigan, it’s crucial to understand the state’s unique vehicle requirements and regulations. Michigan doesn’t use traditional toll readers, so there’s no need to remove them before car transport. However, the state does have specific vehicle inspection laws. While there’s no mandatory annual safety inspection, emissions testing is required in some counties.
The vehicle registration process in Michigan is straightforward. New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. This can be done at any Secretary of State office. Remember to bring proof of ownership, a valid driver’s license, and proof of Michigan no-fault insurance.
When moving to Michigan, you’ll need to set up utilities. Major electricity providers include DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, while water services are typically managed by local municipalities. For internet, popular providers are Comcast, AT&T, and Spectrum.
Don’t forget to register to vote at your local clerk’s office or any Secretary of State branch. If you have children, enroll them in school by contacting the local school district. Michigan also offers excellent public libraries; obtain a library card at your local branch to access a wealth of resources.
If you’re moving away from Michigan, remember to cancel any local memberships and forward your mail through the USPS website. Also, consider the state’s weather when planning your car shipping. Michigan’s harsh winters can affect road conditions, so scheduling your auto transport during milder seasons might be wise.
Michigan’s extensive highway system, including I-75, I-94, and I-96, makes it an accessible state for car shipping services. However, be aware that winter weather can sometimes cause delays in car transport. When choosing a car shipping company, look for one experienced in handling Michigan’s unique climate and road conditions to ensure a smooth auto transport experience.
Michigan Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Michigan?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Michigan. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Michigan?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Michigan?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Michigan?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Michigan
When planning car shipping to or from Michigan, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse seasonal weather patterns. Michigan experiences distinct seasons, each presenting unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, Michigan often faces heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t accommodate these.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
- Remove or properly insulate items that might freeze and expand.
Summer in Michigan can bring high temperatures. When using car shipping services in warmer months:
- Place a sunshade in your vehicle to protect the interior.
- Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp.
Beyond weather, consider peak times for Michigan car shipping. With numerous universities in the state, August and May see increased demand due to student moves. If flexible, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after these peaks to potentially save on costs.
Michigan also experiences a ‘snowbird’ effect, with many residents heading south for winter. This creates heightened demand for car transport services in late fall and early spring. Planning your car shipping outside these busy periods could offer more flexibility and potentially better rates.
By considering these factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when using a car shipping company for your Michigan auto transport needs. Always communicate with your chosen car shipping provider about any specific concerns related to seasonal conditions or timing to ensure the best possible service.
Car Shipping for College Students in Michigan
When planning to bring your car to a Michigan university, it’s crucial to consider parking logistics. Most campuses require parking permits, which you can usually purchase online or at the transportation office. For example, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor offers various permit options for students living on and off-campus. Michigan State University in East Lansing also has a robust parking system, with different zones and rates.
Be aware that parking availability can be limited, especially for freshmen. Some universities restrict first-year students from bringing cars to campus. If you’re living off-campus, check if your apartment includes parking. Many don’t, so you might need to factor in additional costs for nearby lots or street parking.
Michigan’s harsh winters are another consideration. Snow tires are highly recommended, and you’ll want to ensure your car is winter-ready. Most universities offer winter break parking options, but spaces are often limited and may require pre-registration.
Before shipping your car to Michigan, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage is valid in the state. If you’re using a car shipping service to transport your vehicle, research Michigan car shipping companies that specialize in auto transport to college campuses. They can often provide valuable advice on local regulations and the best times to ship your car.
Remember, each university has its own set of rules and resources. Check the specific institution’s website or contact their transportation office for the most up-to-date information on car shipping and parking policies.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Michigan
Michigan is home to several military installations, serving various branches of the armed forces. For those in the military considering car shipping to Michigan, it’s essential to understand the specifics of each base. At Selfridge Air National Guard Base, on-base parking is available, but space can be limited. Military members often seek housing in nearby communities like Chesterfield or New Baltimore, where street parking is generally unrestricted. The Detroit Arsenal in Warren offers on-base parking, and surrounding neighborhoods typically have ample street parking options. For those stationed at Camp Grayling, the largest National Guard training facility in the country, parking is available on-base, but many personnel live off-base in Grayling or nearby towns.
When it comes to vehicle registration, military members new to Michigan should be aware that the state offers a Military Personnel Program. This program allows service members to maintain their home state registration while stationed in Michigan. Additionally, each base has its own Vehicle Registration Office to assist with any specific requirements.
For those using car transport services to Michigan, it’s worth noting that most bases have designated areas for vehicle drop-off and pick-up. To ease the transition, military families can take advantage of on-base amenities like commissaries and exchanges at larger installations. Sherpa Auto Transport is proud to offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services as a token of appreciation for the brave men and women serving our country. Thank you for your service!
Reviews from our Michigan Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Michigan customers:
“Sherpa was awesome. They had a good quote and they came through with what was promised. The pickup was in Michigan, while drop-off was in California, and it was about a week. They emailed me updates, then eventually, they texted me how to reach the driver. We made a drop-off date, time, and location and it worked out. They used a big rig to Sacramento, and from Sacramento, they dropped off the car into a different truck, then this truck only had three vehicles on it. It was super easy, and the vehicle’s condition was great. All in all, Sherpa is reliable and I love how they had upfront pricing. They were a bit more expensive than some of the other carriers, but they were honest. I would recommend them 10 out of 10 times.”
“Writing a review because I relied heavily on these while deciding which broker company to go with to find someone to transport my car from Utah to Michigan. Some background information…I am a gal in my early 20’s that has NO IDEA how these things work. So if you are in the same position as me, this review is for you haha. I first decided to go through with another company who ended up not being authorized which made me extremely nervous while looking for a new company. I found Sherpa on Forbes and after reading the reviews and seeing that if the car doesn’t get picked up by a driver towards the end of the 5 day period you agree on, they contribute their own money, I decided to go through with Sherpa. One thing I learned is to never put down a down payment with a broker. This is apparently a sketchy practice. Sherpa DOES ask for a card to be on file, but they DO NOT charge it until they find someone to pick up your car. In my case, they contributed $150 of the $300 broker fee towards the payment for the actual driver so I ended up paying Sherpa $150 dollars. I will say, I was nervous that my car wouldn’t get picked up within the 5 day time period, but Sherpa found a driver on the 4th day and it was picked up that same day. They stayed in communication with the company that transported my car the entire way. I would 100% use Sherpa again in the future if I need to transport my car somewhere.”

“I shipped my car from Michigan to California and my car arrived sooner than expected and that was good. The company was very good at communicating when the pick up and arrival would occur. I do wish I could have used more of my car to put personal items in. I was only given the trunk.”
“Our experience with Sherpa was great. It was easy and it worked out fine. Everything that was supposed to happen happened. We had them ship a Toyota Camry from New Hampshire to Michigan. The car didn’t have any issues at all. The cost was right where it was supposed to be. We had stuff in the car. They told us a weight limit, but we went under. It was X amount of pounds, and what we put in were just clothes because it was just going to my son at school.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Michigan, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Michigan. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Benefits of Using a Car Transport Company
Choosing car shipping services for your Michigan move offers unbeatable convenience. Professional auto transport companies handle the logistics, saving you time and stress. They provide expertise in navigating Michigan’s diverse terrain, from bustling Detroit to the serene Upper Peninsula. Shipping a car also protects your vehicle from wear and tear, especially during harsh Michigan winters. With insurance coverage and specialized equipment, car transport ensures your vehicle’s safe arrival. Whether you’re relocating for work in Ann Arbor or enjoying a extended stay in Traverse City, Michigan car shipping offers a cost-effective, secure solution for transporting your vehicle across the Great Lakes State.
Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company
When choosing an auto transport company for Michigan car shipping, prioritize reputation and experience. Look for providers with a strong track record in the Great Lakes region. Verify insurance coverage and check the company’s safety rating with the FMCSA. Quality customer service is crucial, especially when navigating Michigan’s diverse weather conditions. Compare pricing and services offered, but remember that the lowest quote isn’t always the best choice. Be wary of companies that demand large upfront deposits or lack transparency in their processes. A reliable car shipping company should offer clear communication and flexible options to suit your needs, whether you’re moving a classic car to a Detroit auto show or relocating to the Upper Peninsula.
