- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Cambridge customers say about Sherpa:
“First, let me say that I didn’t use Sherpa’s service. Turns out that I didn’t need the transport services. However….I’m still rating them five stars because the process leading up to my final decision was stellar! I live in Seattle and I was going to buy a car in Massachusetts from a dealer. The car was $4,000 less expensive in MA. Looking at many options (road trip + flying) vs. transport, the numbers didn’t lie. Transport was definitely more convenient and cheaper.”
“Sherpa was awesome. They took care of everything. And made it very clear to me that working with a broker is absolutely the way to go when shipping a car. In April I had to ship my car from Portland OR to Massachusetts. I was driving a different car across the country, so we had to make sure the shipped car was picked up before I left and not dropped off until I arrived. This is tricky stuff for car shipping.”
“There are so many transportation companies coming at you with so many promises of delivering your vehicle for the best price and the best service. Any first timer can go crazy trying to decide. But after considering five of the top companies, based on reviews and rankings, Sherpa delivered nicely. Very professional over the phone, fair pricing and quick with the pick up and delivery. #PeaceOfMind”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Cambridge Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Cambridge’s location in eastern Massachusetts affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as cross-country transport, generally result in higher prices compared to shorter regional routes.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks typically cost more to transport than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Cambridge. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection, is generally more expensive and may take longer.
- Seasonal Factors: Cambridge’s weather can affect car shipping prices. Winter conditions, including snow and ice, may lead to higher costs due to potential delays and increased safety measures.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Cambridge’s urban setting and proximity to major highways like I-90 and I-95 can help keep costs down. However, if you’re shipping to or from more remote areas, prices may increase.
- Timing: Flexibility in your pickup and delivery dates can lead to better rates. Rush or guaranteed delivery services typically come at a premium.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. If your car doesn’t run, expect to pay more for specialized equipment needed to load and unload it.
Understanding these factors can help you estimate your car shipping costs to or from Cambridge, MA. For a more detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book in advance: Schedule your Cambridge car shipping at least two weeks ahead. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-90 or I-95. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates potential liability issues for the auto transport company.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better options and potentially lower costs for your car shipping service.
- Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to/from Cambridge, MA can be affected by weather and academic schedules. Planning around these factors may help you find more competitive rates.

Cambridge Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping your car to or from Cambridge, MA, it’s crucial to be aware of local regulations and prepare for your move. Cambridge car shipping requires attention to detail, especially regarding vehicle requirements. Massachusetts mandates annual vehicle inspections, so ensure your car is up-to-date before transport. If you’re moving to Cambridge, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) handles this process, which can be done online or in person.
For toll management, Cambridge uses the E-ZPass system. If you’re using car shipping services to move away, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unnecessary charges. When settling in Cambridge, consider applying for a resident parking permit, especially if you’ll be living in a densely populated area.
As you prepare for your move, keep these tips in mind:
- Set up utilities: Eversource provides electricity, while the Cambridge Water Department handles water services.
- Internet options include Comcast and RCN.
- Register to vote at the Cambridge Election Commission.
- Enroll children in the Cambridge Public Schools system.
- Get a library card from the Cambridge Public Library for free access to resources.
If you’re moving away, don’t forget to:
- Cancel local memberships
- Forward your mail through USPS
- Notify your bank and other important contacts
When choosing an auto transport company for your move, consider Cambridge’s weather. Harsh winters can affect car shipping schedules, so plan accordingly. The city’s proximity to major highways like I-90 and I-93 makes it accessible for car transport services. By preparing thoroughly and selecting a reliable car shipping company, your transition to or from Cambridge will be smooth and stress-free.
Cambridge, Massachusetts Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Cambridge?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Cambridge. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Cambridge?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Cambridge?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Cambridge?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Reviews from our Massachusetts Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Massachusetts customers:
“I cannot say enough good things both about Sherpa and the carrier they found for me to take my Jeep from California to Massachusetts. The customer service was absolutely wonderful! Pricing was transparent and never changed, not to mention incredibly reasonable given insane inflation and gas prices. While they DO provide door to door service I offered to meet my carrier in a location that was more convenient for his truck. He was professional, kind, and answered all of my questions on site. I felt very comfortable my Jeep was in safe hands. My jeep arrived safely without a single scratch, dent, or windshield crack! Sherpa also answered all of my questions and put my mind at ease as I had previously had a very negative experience with a different broker firm and was nervous needing to do this again. Sherpa puts all of their carriers through a rigorous vetting process, and not just once, literally every time they use a carrier, doesn’t matter if they’ve used them before. I HIGHLY recommend them!”
“We could not have been happier with our cross country auto transport with Sherpa. Our car was picked up in Los Angeles on time right outside of our apartment and delivered to a Boston suburb exactly within the 3 day window that was promised. That was including having the transport truck not being able to travel for a day due to a bad snowstorm. Dave, the driver of the truck called to keep us informed of his progress across the country and plans for drop off. The car was dropped off in great condition. Everything went according to plan. It seemed so easy. I would definitely recommend Sherpa and Discovery Enterprise Logistics (car transport truck) for anyone looking to transport their car. Very happy customer.”
“Great experience with Sherpa shipping my car from Florida to Massachusetts. Transparent, clear communication from the beginning and stuck to their quoted price, which seems to be a rare thing in this industry. They assigned a company that met all deadlines and timelines and the car was delivered without any issues. This is a broken industry with a lot of sketchy practices and players, do not recommend going for a non-reputable company.”
“I called a company that offered cheaper service. However, they barely communicated, and I became frustrated. I contacted Sherpa because of the excellent communication and constant check-in. They quoted me a reasonable rate, were honest, offered me a discount, and provided a more assured date. They picked up my car when they said it would and delivered two days earlier than they had quoted. I was delighted to see my car, returned my rental immediately, and saved money. There was no damage to my car, and the driver was polite and professional. I would use this company any day. Their customer service is excellent, they are professional, and they treat you respectfully.”
“I screened four different car shipping companies before choosing Sherpa. All – top rated. If you are reading this, you know who they are. I chose Sherpa for the way they talked to me on my first call. Nothing like: “We are the best of best, and you so lucky that we even respond to you” – something like that or as condescending I heard from others. Sherpa folks were totally normal, friendly, responsive and upfront disclosing everything. Not to mention their quote was the best, and they were committed to stick to it. Everything was easy and flawless from pickup to delivery. Of course, everyone’s experience is unique. Mine was very positive.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Cambridge, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Massachusetts. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
