Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Elkridge customers say about Sherpa:

Google
★★★★★

“Outstanding company! I recently had death in my family and had to get my uncle’s car from Florida to Maryland. The paperwork to change ownership of the car was slow, but Sherpa Auto Transport stayed in touch with me. They called once a week to ensure me that the price we had initially agreed to would still be honored. They were very compassionate about my situation.”

Google
★★★★★

“I rarely leave reviews for things, but I wanted to for Sherpa because it was my first time shipping a vehicle and I chose Sherpa as my broker, and everything went great! They chose West Coast Auto Transport as my carrier for shipping my car from WA State to Maryland, and their drivers were so kind and professional.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Pick up was very easy. They told me exactly where to go to. My driver was early, so that was awesome. He called me beforehand just to let me know that he was there, and everything was ready and setup. He did the walk-around, and had all the paperwork ready for me to sign. I asked him how long it usually takes and he said it would take about a week but he would let me know exactly if it would be longer.”

Vehicle Size
  • Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Elkridge, MD. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection but are about 50% more expensive and may take longer for delivery.
  • Location Accessibility: Elkridge’s proximity to major highways like I-95 and I-70 makes it easier and more affordable for auto transport. Rural areas further from these routes may incur higher costs.
  • Seasonal Factors: Elkridge experiences all four seasons, which can affect car shipping prices. Winter weather and summer demand may increase costs, while spring and fall might offer more competitive rates.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or inoperable vehicles cost more to ship. Standard-sized, running cars are the most economical to transport to or from Elkridge.
  • Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can reduce your car shipping costs. Rush services for quick transport to or from Elkridge will be pricier.
  • Distance: Long-distance shipments to or from Elkridge generally cost less per mile than shorter routes, but the total price will be higher.
  • Market Demand: Auto transport prices in Elkridge can fluctuate based on the current demand for car shipping services in the area.

Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your car shipping needs in Elkridge, MD. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Elkridge car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major highways like I-95 or Route 1. This can reduce fuel costs and potentially lower your car transport price.
  • Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during auto transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better car shipping rates. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more competitive pricing options.
  • Consider terminal-to-terminal: While Sherpa doesn’t offer this service, it’s worth noting that terminal-to-terminal shipping can sometimes be more cost-effective than door-to-door auto transport.

How does Elkridge Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process in Elkridge, MD, requires careful planning and consideration of local factors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you smoothly transport your vehicle to or from this charming Howard County town:

  • Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable auto transport company. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors like vehicle type, distance, and shipping method.
  • Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car shipping service. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa Auto Transport.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Before the pickup date, prepare your car for shipping. This includes washing it, removing personal items, and performing a maintenance check.
  • Consider local factors: Elkridge experiences all four seasons, so be mindful of weather conditions when scheduling your shipment. Snow and ice in winter can affect transport times. Also, its proximity to major highways like I-95 and I-295 can facilitate easier pickup and delivery.
  • Meet the carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the carrier to hand over the keys and conduct an inspection. Elkridge’s suburban layout usually allows for door-to-door service, but be prepared for nearby meetup spots if needed.
  • Track your shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Most auto transport companies provide regular updates.
  • Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly before signing the bill of lading. Pay any remaining balance to complete the car shipping process.

By following these steps and working with a reliable car shipping company, you can ensure a smooth auto transport experience to or from Elkridge, MD. Remember to plan ahead, especially during peak moving seasons or harsh winter weather, to secure the best rates and timelines for your car shipment.

For vehicle-specific requirements, Maryland law mandates all vehicles to pass a safety inspection before registration. Elkridge residents often use E-ZPass for toll roads, so remember to transfer or acquire a new transponder to avoid unexpected charges.

For auto transport in Elkridge, be aware of the area’s weather conditions. The city experiences all four seasons, with hot summers and cold winters. Elkridge, Maryland Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Elkridge?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Elkridge. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Elkridge?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Elkridge?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Elkridge?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“I`m in the military and I had to change duty stations, so I needed to ship my car, a Honda Accord 2015, from Washington to Maryland. I looked at two transport companies, then I went with Sherpa Auto Transport because their reviews were good and their price was more reasonable. The rep, Tim, was perfect and I loved him. When I got worried because the transport date was coming and I didn’t have a driver yet, he let me know that he was gonna do everything he could to get me a driver. Tim explained to me that Sherpa has a policy of getting a driver either the day before or on the day of the shipping. I thought I was gonna get a driver assigned to me a week before the shipping date, but Tim reassured me that everything was good. In fact, I did get a driver on that day and everything went smoothly.”

“I`ve used another transport service a couple of years ago and then, I saw Sherpa had the best website out of all of them and I liked it. I would put my information on a site and then, all of sudden, I`d get 70 calls from different contractors. With Sherpa, I really liked that there is just one middleman that took care of all of that. Tim was awesome, the sweetest and the most helpful. He was kind, answered all my questions and took his time explaining everything. Also, I looked at all the reviews, and they were good. The quote was awesome and you don`t have to bargain since they had a flat rate. You don`t have to talk to people back and forth like in the company that I used in the past. When a person arrives, it was very cut and dry. For a company like Sherpa, I would almost expect it to be more expensive but I was happy to find that it was just around the amount that I paid before, but it wasn`t the extra haggle and the extra trouble. So, I was really satisfied with the whole thing.”

“I used Colonial Van Lines when I moved my house from Maryland to Vancouver, Washington. They also coordinated moving my cars and they were able to move one of them. But they somehow canceled my second car move. I told them that I needed it moved out by July 22nd and they said that they couldn`t find anything. They said that on that weekend, they could do it but I told them to forget it. So, I started calling around and Sherpa was able to find the driver. I was thankful that they were able to squeeze me in in such a short notification. The driver was really good, too. I got the call at least 24 hours in advance and I was able to text him back and forth. Where I live, it`s a little hard to bring those 18-wheeler to load the cars, so we were able to connect. We agreed to meet.at a nearby gas station and he was there before the time. So, things worked really well for the pickup.”

Consumer Affairs

“I needed to get my daughter`s mini cooper back from university since she`s home for the summer and would be transferring. I`ve looked at one or 2 other companies and everybody`s about the same price, anywhere from $900 to $1,100 for that coast to coast transfer. I used a different firm when I set it out in the fall and it was about $930 or $950. But that was a challenge and the driver`s English was not very good. This time, Sherpa did a good contact and they turned everything around right away. So, I got them to do the auto transport from San Diego to Annapolis, Maryland. Then, after a slight delay, when I contacted them they told me that they typically don`t get back until they have assigned it to a driver. And yes, the driver typically don`t do it until the Sunday before their leaving so that they know what area they`re gonna be in. That was the only nerve wracking portion because my daughter was on a tight schedule and not knowing if the car was for sure gonna be picked up or not. But then after that, everything went great.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I would definitely recommend Sherpa Auto Transport. They shipped the 2006 Toyota Camry from Washington state to Maryland. I called another broker and they changed the price on me three times, so I canceled with that one. Then I saw a television advertisement for Sherpa`s service and decided to try them. After giving me the initial quote, they didn`t change the price on me. Also, their price was cheaper and there was a $200 difference in their quote compared to other transport companies that I looked at. But the final price did not match the initial quote and it is still being negotiated because the $200 difference includes $100 reimbursement with the TV advertisements. So, I`m still trying to get $100 back but in the Visa card form and there are a couple of steps involved with that. Other than that, I had a very good experience with the driver. He was very accommodating. But that is not a reflection of Sherpa but more of a reflection of the sub-contractor that they hired.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Elkridge, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Maryland. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
