What our Baltimore customers say about Sherpa:
“Thank you so much for the fabulous experience we recently had transporting our car with Sherpa. Just as states starting closing down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our daughter’s car died. She is an ICU nurse at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and would have taken the bus if the social distancing order was not in effect.”
“My experience with Sherpa went very well. I shipped my car from Baltimore to Los Angeles. The carrier was CA Auto Express Inc. The car was picked up on 5/11 and delivered on 5/17. The carrier contacted me the night prior to pickup and gave me an estimated time for pickup.”
“A very nice guy gave me a call back. He was explaining a little bit about how Sherpa, and that they would be able to honor their price. They had a very good rating about picking it up within the window that you hoped for. They said that even if they can’t get maybe that exact price from the third party, they would still honor it somehow.”

Factors that affect Baltimore Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Baltimore’s central location on the East Coast affects shipping costs. Transporting cars to nearby cities like Washington D.C. or Philadelphia is generally cheaper than shipping to distant locations like Los Angeles or Miami.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Baltimore. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from harsh weather and road debris for high-value vehicles.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Baltimore’s urban setting and proximity to major highways like I-95 and I-83 can lower shipping costs. Rural pickups or deliveries in Maryland may increase prices.
- Seasonal Factors: Baltimore’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter storms may cause delays or higher rates, while summer is typically busier and more expensive for auto transport.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the price for Baltimore car shipping services.
- Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can reduce costs when shipping a car to or from Baltimore. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come with higher prices.
Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your Baltimore car transport needs. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Baltimore car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates on your auto transport.
- Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient spots near major interstates like I-95 or I-695. This can reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during car transport.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for shipping a car to or from Baltimore, MD.
- Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport rates may vary based on the time of year. Discuss with your Sherpa advisor how seasonality might affect your Baltimore car shipping costs.

In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Baltimore?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Baltimore?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Baltimore?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. What types of vehicles can you transport?

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Baltimore
When planning car shipping to or from Baltimore, MD, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. Baltimore experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, Baltimore car shipping can be affected by snow and ice. When scheduling your car transport, keep these tips in mind:
- Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, not steep inclines that could be icy.
- Remove items that might freeze and expand in your vehicle during transit.
Summer in Baltimore can be hot and humid. For shipping a car during warmer months:
- Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove heat-sensitive items that could melt inside the vehicle.
Beyond weather, consider timing when booking car shipping services in Baltimore. The city hosts several universities, so auto transport demand spikes at the beginning and end of academic terms. To avoid higher rates and longer wait times, try to schedule your car transport a few weeks before or after these peak periods.
Baltimore’s proximity to military bases can also impact car shipping availability. Be aware of training start dates that might coincide with increased demand for auto transport services.
By considering these factors when planning your Baltimore car shipping, you’ll ensure a smoother, more cost-effective experience with your chosen car shipping company.
Car Shipping for College Students in Baltimore, Maryland
When considering car shipping to Baltimore for college, it’s crucial to understand each university’s parking policies. At Johns Hopkins University, students must register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. Loyola University Maryland provides on-campus parking for resident students, but space is limited. Most off-campus apartments near these universities offer parking, but it’s wise to confirm before signing a lease. For winter breaks, many campuses have designated long-term parking areas, but it’s best to check with your specific school. Baltimore experiences occasional snowfall, so consider all-season tires for your vehicle. Before shipping your car to Baltimore, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. If you’re unsure about auto transport options, consult a reputable car shipping company for advice on the best way to ship a car to your campus.

“I rarely leave reviews for things, but I wanted to for Sherpa because it was my first time shipping a vehicle and I chose Sherpa as my broker, and everything went great! They chose West Coast Auto Transport as my carrier (which they assigned very quickly) for shipping my car from WA State to Maryland, and their drivers were so kind and professional. They picked up my car on the first day of the pickup window, and despite a delay in delivery, the carrier gave me an update and the driver for delivery was very communicative about arrival and it truly was door-to-door service! He parked his truck down the road and personally drove my vehicle right to my apartment building door – so awesome! I will absolutely use Sherpa again for any future car shipping needs.”
“I was very anxious to ship our car from all the reviews regarding price changes, pick up and delivery date delays, etc’¦. I have to say Sherpa was seamless and flexible. The price was the price. After we received the exact pick up date, we asked about the ability to adjust the location slightly. It is the carrier’s decision but Sherpa and the carrier were accommodating. The car arrived quickly; it was a CA to MD transport Picked up on Tuesday; delivered on Sunday. Car was in great shape. Thank you, Sherpa”
“We shipped our cars using Shera in July and we were very happy with the service they provided. They were easily reachable by phone and took proper care of our requirement. The cars were picked up within the given date window and were delivered in due time. We worked with Daniel S., and he was super friendly and helpful! Overall it was a good experience and we`ll recommend Sherpa Auto Transport Thank you!”
“Sherpa was great! We shipped our car from MD to CA with CA Auto Express Inc and couldn’t have been happier with the service. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Everything left inside the car was safe and accounted for. The drivers were very friendly and communicative. We thought the price was a great deal for all that was included. Definitely recommend!”
“Great service and communication. Sherpa was able to ship our small SUV from California to Maryland and it was super easy to book our appointment. They did a fantastic job at a very fair cost. What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Baltimore, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Maryland. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
