- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Maryland customers say about Sherpa:
“The quote was awesome and you don’t have to bargain since they had a flat rate. You don’t have to talk to people back and forth like in the company that I used in the past. When a person arrives, it was very cut and dry. For a company like Sherpa, I would almost expect it to be more expensive but I was happy to find that it was just around the amount that I paid before, but it wasn’t the extra haggle and the extra trouble. So, I was really satisfied with the whole thing.”
“I rarely leave reviews for things, but I wanted to for Sherpa because it was my first time shipping a vehicle and I chose Sherpa as my broker, and everything went great! They chose West Coast Auto Transport as my carrier (which they assigned very quickly) for shipping my car from WA State to Maryland, and their drivers were so kind and professional.”
“Outstanding company! I recently had death in my family and had to get my uncle’s car from Florida to Maryland. The paperwork to change ownership of the car was slow, but Sherpa Auto Transport stayed in touch with me. They called once a week to ensure me that the price we had initially agreed to would still be honored. They were very compassionate about my situation.”

Factors that affect Maryland Car Shipping Prices
- Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to and from Maryland. They’re suitable for most vehicles and offer quick delivery times. Enclosed trailers, while about 50% more expensive and typically slower, provide extra protection for high-value or classic cars against Maryland’s varied weather conditions.
- Location Accessibility: Shipping to urban areas like Baltimore or Annapolis is generally cheaper than to rural parts of Maryland. Consider meeting your carrier near major highways like I-95 or I-70 for potential cost savings.
- Seasonal Factors: Maryland’s car shipping rates may fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher prices due to increased demand. Winter weather, particularly in Western Maryland, can also affect transport costs and timelines.
- Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your vehicle impact shipping costs. Larger vehicles or those with low ground clearance may incur additional fees. Non-running cars are more expensive to ship as they require special equipment.
- Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates. Rush or guaranteed pickup services will increase your car shipping costs to or from Maryland.
- Route Popularity: Shipping along busy routes, such as between Maryland and Florida (a popular snowbird route), may offer more competitive pricing due to higher carrier availability.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Maryland. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Maryland car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates on your auto transport to or from Maryland.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-95 or I-70. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall car shipping price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before transport. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during shipping.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective car transport opportunities in Maryland.
- Consider seasonal timing: Maryland’s weather can impact car shipping rates. Summer months often see increased demand and higher prices, while winter might offer more competitive rates for your auto transport needs.

How does Maryland Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from Maryland requires careful planning and consideration of the state’s unique characteristics. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you ship your car smoothly:
- Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors such as your vehicle type, pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
- Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa.
- Prepare your vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car, remove personal items, and perform a maintenance check. This is particularly important if you’re shipping during Maryland’s humid summers or snowy winters, as weather can impact your vehicle’s condition during transport.
- Consider Maryland’s geography: When planning your auto transport, keep in mind Maryland’s diverse landscape. From the coastal areas of the Chesapeake Bay to the mountainous western region, your car may encounter various terrains and weather conditions during transit.
- Choose your shipping method: Decide between open or enclosed car transport. For luxury or classic cars, enclosed transport offers extra protection from Maryland’s sometimes unpredictable weather.
- Plan for traffic: Maryland’s proximity to major cities like Baltimore and Washington D.C. can lead to heavy traffic, especially on I-95 and I-70. Factor this into your pickup and delivery expectations.
- Meet the carrier and inspect your vehicle: At pickup and delivery, thoroughly inspect your car and document its condition.

Maryland Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Maryland or moving within the state, there are several important factors to consider. Maryland’s unique regulations and local requirements can impact your auto transport experience and overall relocation process.
First, let’s address vehicle-specific considerations. Maryland uses the E-ZPass system for electronic toll collection. If you’re moving away, remember to remove your E-ZPass transponder to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to Maryland, you can easily obtain an E-ZPass online or at various retail locations.
Maryland requires vehicle inspections for newly registered cars. After your car shipping service delivers your vehicle, you’ll need to have it inspected within 90 days. The state also mandates emissions testing every two years for most vehicles.
When it comes to vehicle registration, new Maryland residents must register their cars within 60 days of moving. You’ll need to provide proof of ownership, a valid driver’s license, and proof of Maryland insurance.
Now, let’s cover some general moving tips. To set up utilities, contact Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) for electricity and your local municipality for water services. For internet, providers like Xfinity, Verizon, and AT&T offer services in many areas.
Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll your children in local schools. Maryland’s public libraries offer free cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources.
When planning your car transport to Maryland, consider the state’s diverse climate. Winters can be cold with occasional snow, while summers are warm and humid. This weather variety may influence your choice of car shipping services, as enclosed transport might be preferable during harsh weather conditions.
Lastly, familiarize yourself with Maryland’s major highways, including I-95, I-70, and I-83, as these routes are commonly used for auto transport and will likely play a role in your vehicle’s journey to its new home in the Old Line State.
Maryland Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Maryland?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Maryland. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Maryland?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Maryland?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Maryland?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Maryland
When planning car shipping to or from Maryland, it’s crucial to consider the state’s seasonal weather patterns. Maryland experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, snow and ice can complicate car shipping services. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, not steep inclines, to prevent slipping in icy conditions.
- Remove any items from your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.
During summer, Maryland can experience high temperatures and humidity. When shipping a car in these conditions:
- Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior from heat damage.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items that could melt or warp.
Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial for efficient Maryland car shipping. Keep in mind:
- College towns like College Park see increased demand for car transport services at the beginning and end of semesters. Consider scheduling your shipment a few weeks before or after these peak times.
- The Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area experiences heavy traffic during government and military relocations, typically in summer months.
- Fall foliage season (September to November) can bring increased tourism and potentially affect auto transport schedules.
By considering these factors, you can ensure a smoother car shipping experience to or from Maryland. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on seasonal considerations and optimal shipping times.
Car Shipping for College Students in Maryland
When considering car shipping to Maryland for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at universities. Most Maryland institutions require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. For instance, the University of Maryland, College Park offers various permit options, including overnight parking for residents. However, spaces are limited, so plan ahead!
Some key points to remember:
- Winter Storage: Many campuses offer long-term parking during breaks. Check with your school’s transportation services for options.
- Weather Considerations: Maryland experiences snowy winters. While not mandatory, snow tires can be beneficial. Consider this when planning your auto transport to Maryland.
- Off-Campus Living: If you’re residing off-campus, verify parking availability at your apartment. Some complexes have limited spaces or additional fees.
- Insurance and Assistance: Before shipping your car, ensure your insurance and roadside assistance coverage is valid in Maryland.
Remember, each university has unique policies. Johns Hopkins, for example, restricts freshman parking. Always check your specific school’s regulations before arranging car transport to Maryland. By planning ahead, you’ll ensure a smooth transition and avoid unexpected hurdles when bringing your vehicle to campus.

Reviews from our Maryland Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Maryland customers:
“My son who lives in California is in the army and he bought a car during Christmas in Maryland. He needed to ship the car to California, so I went on Google and searched different sites. I went to the Better Business Bureau as well and after I saw a lot of negative comments about different places that ship cars, I settled on one company, but they were taking a little too long to ship the car. I had to keep calling them back. I already saw Sherpa before, and their price seemed high, but when I went back, it was the average price of all the other ones. They also had a guarantee that they wouldn`t go over a certain amount they quote me, so I picked them. I started online at first, then they quoted me a price and explained to me how it works. I told Sherpa about the other company that I was going to use. There was a problem because, even though I didn`t pay the other company, they had it look like I was booked with them. Sherpa advised me to call the other company to have it cleared up so there would be no confusion in the future, and the price Sherpa gave me never went up. They picked up the car the day they said they would, even though it was pouring down rain outside. I thought there would be a delay. The driver let me know where he was. It was a cool guy who picked the car up. We met at a shopping center and everything went smooth. I walked through the vehicle and video recorded it as well as took pictures. The driver did the same thing I did, but he was a little more thorough than I was. He had a pattern of security for making sure the car didn`t fall, and he checked everything and made sure everything was precise. When the car arrived, my son said there were no issues. He said it was a little dirty, but to be expected.”
“I needed to have my vehicle shipped from Arizona to Maryland. I contacted Sherpa Auto Transport based on the Google reviews. My selection of this company was due to the contact and information provided by their representative Danielle. She explained the process to me answered all my questions. I gave them a pickup date and that was the date my vehicle was picked up. They provided me with an estimate delivery date and my delivery happened before the that estimate date. I was very pleased with the driver who contacted me when he was in the area to let me know the delivery day and time. He kept true to his word in contacting and delivery. Thank you Sherpa for giving me peace of mind in the delivery of my vehicle.”
“I was very anxious to ship our car from all the reviews regarding price changes, pick up and delivery date delays, etc…. I have to say Sherpa was seamless and flexible. The price was the price. After we received the exact pick up date, we asked about the ability to adjust the location slightly. It is the carrier’s decision but Sherpa and the carrier were accommodating. The car arrived quickly; it was a CA to MD transport Picked up on Tuesday; delivered on Sunday. Car was in great shape. Thank you, Sherpa”
“We shipped our cars using Shera in July and we were very happy with the service they provided. They were easily reachable by phone and took proper care of our requirement. The cars were picked up within the given date window and were delivered in due time. We worked with Daniel S., and he was super friendly and helpful! Overall it was a good experience and we`ll recommend Sherpa Auto Transport Thank you!”
“My family had an excellent experience with Sherpa Auto. Our car was shipped from Maryland to Arizona in five days. The Sherpa team is high responsive and our driver kept us updated on the delivery. The delivery was not quite door-to-door instead the driver asked to meet us around the corner in a space large enough for his truck. I will use Sherpa again.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Maryland, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Maryland. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
