Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“During the process, I hadn’t closed the deal for the vehicle yet. But Sherpa was ready to go and I had to hold them back two or three times from shipping the car to Louisiana where I live. They worked with that and they were very cordial and gracious. They were on top of their game and as soon as I gave them the go, they went ahead.”

Consumer Affairs

“We are so very pleased with the transport of our son’s truck from Virginia to Louisiana. Factors that affect Louisiana Car Shipping Prices

Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance and Route: Louisiana’s location in the southern United States affects shipping costs. Routes along major interstates like I-10, I-20, and I-49 are typically more cost-effective than rural routes. Shipping to or from New Orleans or Baton Rouge is often cheaper than remote areas.
  • Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Louisiana. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from road debris and Louisiana’s frequent rain. It’s ideal for high-value or classic cars.
  • Seasonal Factors: Louisiana’s hot, humid summers and mild winters can impact car shipping prices. Hurricane season (June to November) may cause delays or price fluctuations. Winter is often the most affordable time for car transport in Louisiana.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks cost more to ship due to their weight and size. Inoperable vehicles incur additional fees as they require special equipment for loading and unloading.
  • Pickup and Delivery Flexibility: Opting for terminal-to-terminal service in major Louisiana cities can be cheaper than door-to-door delivery. However, door-to-door service offers more convenience, especially in Louisiana’s rural areas.
  • Timing and Demand: Car shipping to or from Louisiana during peak moving seasons (summer months and January) may be more expensive due to higher demand. Planning your shipment during off-peak times can lead to cost savings.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Louisiana. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Louisiana car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping provides the most cost-effective option for car transport to or from Louisiana. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers greater flexibility and lower rates.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-10, I-20, or I-49. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering flexibility in pickup and delivery dates can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times to or from Louisiana.
  • Consider seasonal factors: Louisiana’s climate can affect car shipping. During hurricane season (June to November), rates may fluctuate. Planning around these times could result in more favorable pricing for your auto transport needs.

Louisiana Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to Louisiana or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Louisiana doesn’t require a specific toll reader, but drivers should be aware of the few toll roads in the state, such as the LA-1 Expressway. For car transport to Louisiana, ensure your vehicle meets the state’s inspection laws. Louisiana mandates annual safety inspections for most vehicles, with some parishes also requiring emissions testing.

The vehicle registration process in Louisiana is straightforward. New residents must register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. You’ll need to provide proof of ownership, insurance, and a completed application form. When shipping a car from Louisiana, remember to transfer your registration to your new state promptly.

For those moving to Louisiana, setting up utilities is a key step. Major electricity providers include Entergy and SWEPCO, while water services are typically managed by local municipalities. For internet, providers like AT&T, Cox, and Spectrum are widely available. Don’t forget to register to vote and obtain a Louisiana driver’s license within 30 days of your move.

If you’re leaving Louisiana, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify relevant authorities of your move. When choosing a car shipping company for your relocation, consider Louisiana’s unique climate. The state’s humid subtropical weather and occasional hurricanes make enclosed auto transport a wise choice for protecting your vehicle during transit.

Louisiana’s extensive network of interstates, including I-10, I-20, and I-49, facilitates efficient car shipping services across the state. Whether you’re moving to the vibrant streets of New Orleans or the serene bayous of Acadiana, understanding these local nuances will ensure a smooth transition for both you and your vehicle.

Louisiana Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Louisiana?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Louisiana. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Louisiana?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Louisiana?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Louisiana?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Louisiana

When planning car shipping to or from Louisiana, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique climate and seasonal factors. Louisiana experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters, which can impact your auto transport experience. Here are some essential tips to ensure a smooth car shipping process:

Summer Considerations:

  • Use a sunshade under your windshield to protect your car’s interior from intense heat.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle to prevent melting or damage.
  • Consider scheduling your car transport for early morning or evening to avoid peak heat hours.

Hurricane Season Awareness:

  • Be mindful of the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) when booking Louisiana car shipping services.
  • Stay informed about weather forecasts and potential route changes due to storms.
  • Have a flexible schedule in case of weather-related delays.

Seasonal Traffic Considerations:

  • Plan around major events like Mardi Gras (February/March) in New Orleans, which can cause traffic congestion.
  • Be aware of increased auto transport demand during college move-in/move-out periods, especially in cities like Baton Rouge and Lafayette.
  • Consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after peak times for potentially better rates and availability.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can ensure a more efficient and cost-effective car shipping experience to or from Louisiana. Always work with a reputable car shipping company that understands the unique challenges of Louisiana auto transport to guarantee the best service for your vehicle.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Louisiana

When considering car shipping to Louisiana for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at universities. Most Louisiana colleges require parking permits, which students can purchase online or at campus offices. For example, Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge offers various parking zones with different rates. Students living on campus often have designated lots, while commuters may need to use shuttle services from outer lots.

Before shipping your car to campus, check if your dorm or apartment includes parking. Many off-campus housing options provide spaces, but it’s not guaranteed. For winter breaks, most universities allow extended parking in specific lots, but always verify the policy to avoid fines.

Louisiana’s climate doesn’t typically require snow tires, but be prepared for heavy rain. Ensure your vehicle is equipped with good all-season tires and working windshield wipers. When using car shipping services to bring your vehicle to Louisiana, consider timing it with the start of the semester to avoid storage fees.

Lastly, review your insurance and roadside assistance coverage. Some policies may not fully cover out-of-state students or have limited service areas. If you’re using a car transport company to ship your car to Louisiana, confirm they offer insurance during transit. By planning ahead and understanding these factors, you can ensure a smooth transition to campus life with your vehicle.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Louisiana

Louisiana is home to several military installations, making it a crucial hub for service members. Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City and Fort Polk in Vernon Parish are two major bases in the state. When it comes to car shipping and auto transport for military personnel, there are some important considerations to keep in mind.

Most bases offer on-site parking for active duty members, but space can be limited. It’s advisable to check with your specific base for parking regulations and availability. For those living off-base, many neighborhoods near military installations have ample street parking, but always verify local restrictions.

Vehicle registration in Louisiana requires proof of insurance and a valid military ID. The state offers a military exemption on vehicle property taxes for service members stationed in Louisiana but with out-of-state residency.

Military families will find various resources near bases, including commissaries, exchanges, and support services. The Military OneSource website is an excellent starting point for information on local amenities and assistance programs.

When using car shipping services to or from Louisiana, military members should inform their chosen car shipping company about their status. Many providers, including Sherpa Auto Transport, offer military discounts. Sherpa provides a $50 discount as a token of appreciation for your service. Remember to have your military ID ready when arranging your car transport.

Whether you’re shipping a car to start a new assignment or returning home, Louisiana’s military-friendly environment makes the transition smoother. Thank you and your families for your dedicated service to our nation.

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Louisiana customers:

“I was burned pretty badly by a moving broker last year, so I was pretty nervous to use a broker to ship my newly acquired and inoperable Jeep CJ7 enclosed from Rhode Island to Louisiana. I did my homework and called around. The guys at Sherpa “sales” were very nice (but all brokers are – or should be), and did their best to assuage my fears. A note on auto shipping brokers – very few companies are able to do all auto ships. Even if you find a company that CAN move your auto with their own truck ($$$$), chances are good that they won`t be able to do your specific move, and will reserve the right to broker your shipment regardless. Sherpa came in around the middle in terms of price. What made me choose their services was their “price lock” policy, where they will dig into their commission to up the bid on your shipment, if necessary. This means it`s worth their while to provide you with a quality quote. Other businesses will underquote, and then charge you later for the difference in the ultimate bid price. In my case, they had to throw in $175 of their $300 commission to get someone to pick up the shipment. What this means is that if I had gone with Montway, who quoted me about $300 less, I`d be out almost $500 when all was said and done. Sherpa kept me updated, for the most part. I got a bit worried when I hadn`t heard from them a couple of days before the pickup window. I emailed and called, and got prompt responses. They had a little trouble finding a taker for the job, but ultimately came through. Pickup was ONE DAY past the three day window they`d predicted, and delivery was right on time (and very fast, pickup was on Thursday, deliver was on the following Tuesday). The shipper they used was Best West Trans. They were great, driver was friendly and helpful. Ultimately, my fears of this process were totally unwarranted (or, at least help me find a quality broker).”

“We were moving our car from New Orleans to California for a vacation visit for three months. My husband had contacted several transport companies but he hadn’t gotten any response back. I contacted two and I heard from both of them. Both of them were pleasant. Sherpa offered a couple of incentives which made the difference. The quote was competitive with the other one, except Sherpa was offering $100 rebate. They were also offering a $20 rebate for the carwash which was very good. We’ve also contracted with them to return our car in March. So, they picked up the car in New Orleans, they delivered it on the day they said they would, and we were really pleased. I’m satisfied enough that I’m gonna use them again when I return the car to New Orleans.”

“My sister-in-law was in the military and she got transferred from Washington State to Fort Polk, Louisiana. I was helping her ship her vehicle. I did some research, who best met our needs and Sherpa seemed they were the best. It was a good experience with their team. It dragged on for four weeks, they were waiting on me. They were very understanding when I had the information I had to get for them. When I asked them to follow up, they followed up. The delivery driver explained his situation. He had multiple stops and pick-ups, so I asked him to stay in communication with me to give me updates and he kept on following up with me. I asked for a text versus a phone call and he did. It went very smoothly. They more than met my expectation.”

“I purchased a 2017 Sublime Green Ram 1500, sight unseen except for internet pictures, from a dealer in Louisiana. I needed to have it transported to Florida. After speaking with a few transport companies that sounded a little sketchy, I came across Sherpa`s ad. I called and spoke with Sean who allayed my fears of interstate auto transport. He found me a great transporter who was courteous and competent. I was contacted several times by Gregory, the transporter, while en route. The truck arrived safe and sound almost to my doorstep! And as a bonus, I received the $100 gift card I was promised within 2 weeks! Great company! I would definitely use Sherpa again. Sherpa takes the guesswork out of interstate auto transport. Thanks Sean!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was really good. They came on time, picked up my vehicle in California, and delivered it to Louisiana in the duration of time that they said that they were gonna deliver it. Once it was on the big transport truck, the driver acknowledged that they had the car, they were in transit, got to the destination, contacted the person on the other end that was picking the car up for me, washed the car, gave the car to the person on the other end, did the inspection, my daughter drove off with the vehicle, and everything`s great. There was no damage to the vehicle.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Louisiana, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Louisiana. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
