Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

“I decided to ship my 1987 BMW convertible from Kansas to Los Angeles rather than drive it there. I chose Sherpa and it was a good choice! They found a driver coming to Kansas within two days and picked up the car three days after that. The driver was very conscientious and careful pointing out small defects in my car.”

Yelp

“This was my first time ever shipping a car and it was a great experience! Will with Sherpa answered every question I had, was quick to respond, and even gave me some questions to ask other car transport companies. I booked the car transport late Friday, and Will followed up the next day to confirm the details. My car was picked up in Kansas City on Monday evening and delivered Wednesday night to my home in California in perfect shape.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Wichita, KS. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car affect shipping rates. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks typically cost more to transport than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Transport Method: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Wichita. Enclosed transport, while pricier, offers extra protection and is ideal for high-value or classic cars, especially during Kansas’s varied weather conditions.
  • Season: Auto transport rates can fluctuate based on the time of year. Summer months and January often see higher prices due to increased demand. Wichita’s extreme weather, from hot summers to snowy winters, can also impact shipping schedules and costs.
  • Route Popularity: Shipping to or from Wichita might be more affordable due to its central location and access to major highways like I-35 and I-135. However, less traveled routes to smaller towns in Kansas may incur higher costs.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Expedited shipping to Wichita will cost more than standard delivery options. Flexible pickup and delivery dates can often result in lower prices for your car transport.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to ship. Inoperable cars require special equipment for loading and unloading, increasing the overall cost of auto transport to or from Wichita.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Wichita, KS. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Wichita car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your car to or from Wichita. This method offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-35 or I-135. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. This flexibility can lead to better options and potential savings on your Wichita auto transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons in Wichita, such as summer months or college move-in periods. Off-peak shipping can often result in lower rates.
  • Leverage Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise: While it’s tempting to shop around, remember that Sherpa’s quotes are realistic and locked-in. This ensures you won’t face unexpected costs when shipping your car to or from Wichita.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to or from Wichita, KS, it’s essential to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. Kansas doesn’t have a specific toll reader system, but if you’re moving from a state with tolls, remember to cancel or remove your transponder. For those relocating to Wichita, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 90 days of establishing residency. The Kansas Department of Revenue handles vehicle registration, and you’ll need to provide proof of insurance, a valid driver’s license, and vehicle title.

Wichita experiences all four seasons, with hot summers and cold winters. This climate variety means you should consider seasonal car maintenance when shipping your vehicle. For example, ensure your car’s cooling system is in good condition for summer arrivals, and consider winter tires for vehicles arriving in colder months.

When settling in Wichita, you’ll need to set up utilities. Evergy provides electricity, while the City of Wichita manages water services. For internet, major providers include Cox and AT&T. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if you have children, enroll them in the Wichita Public Schools system.

If you’re moving away from Wichita, remember to:

  • Forward your mail through the USPS
  • Cancel local memberships (gyms, clubs, etc.)
  • Return library books and cancel your library card
  • Notify your employer and update your address with banks and credit card companies

Wichita’s central location makes it a hub for auto transport and car shipping services. Major highways like I-35 and I-135 connect the city to other parts of Kansas and neighboring states, facilitating efficient car transport. When choosing a car shipping company, look for one familiar with Wichita’s layout and weather conditions to ensure a smooth vehicle shipping experience.

Wichita, Kansas Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Wichita?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Wichita. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Wichita?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Wichita?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Wichita?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“Scott was my contact at Sherpa and clearly described the auto shipping process and the advantages of Sherpa over other companies. He was accurate and very helpful and always available. Straight Line auto shipping shipped my vehicle and the driver was flexible on the schedule and gave us ample time to pick up and meet for delivery.”

Consumer Affairs

“I looked online at some different ratings, and Sherpa was rated high on a couple different sites I found. Their reps were very clear and helpful as well. They gave me a quote, and that’s how much I paid. It was exactly what they said, which was 1,000 plus 300. Also, the driver was very good at his job, and I highly recommend him.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Highly recommended. I tried with another company and it went South very fast. That company wasn’t very informative. When I called Sherpa they were very upfront and honest. I had my vehicle delivered in 4 days which was awesome. The last company couldn’t find a driver for 2 weeks. Sherpa found one in 2 days. Highly recommended.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“I used Sherpa transport to help me out of a bad spot. I picked up a car at a dealership in Dallas Texas and started my 22 hr trip back home. I got as far a Little Rock Arkansas and at 11:30 hit one of Interstate 40’s famous Arkansas pot holes it must have been about 2 feet in diameter and at least 6″ deep. It ruined my tire and broke my 22″ rim. I tried the next day to find someone to fix my car , but nobody had a wheel and tire for my exotic ( no spare in car) I had the car towed to a lot and paid a huge amount to fly back to BWI airport. The next day I found Sherpa transport after making about 20 calls to other so called first class carriers. Nobody would help me transport my car with a flat tire and bent rim. I contacted Sherpa and they were extremely helpful and courteous ! They came up with a price that I could handle and allowed me to charge it on my credit card. Their attention to detail is first class and they promised email and text notification through out the entire process ,and they did not disappoint me ! the let me know when they had a driver and then when he was scheduled for pick up , when he did pick it up and notifications when the driver was close to my location. I am very happy with Sherpa and the driver the contracted with. I will be using Sherpa transport again and again in my small custom car business.”

Google
★★★★★

“I used this company to transport my car from Kansas to Florida. I was very skeptical going into this process, but SHERPA did exactly what they said they were going to do. They found a company for the price they quoted me, I paid exactly what I was expected to pay and my car arrived on time and in perfect condition. I highly recommend this company to anyone especially if you don’t know which company to trust.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Wichita, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Kansas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
