Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Kansas City customers say about Sherpa:

Yelp
★★★★★

“This was my first time ever shipping a car and it was a great experience! Will with Sherpa answered every question I had, was quick to respond to all of my questions, and even gave me some questions to ask other car transport companies while I was researching companies. I ultimately came back to Sherpa. I also appreciated the price lock guarantee. I booked the car transport late Friday, and Will followed up the next day with me to confirm the details. I had no set schedule for when I needed the car delivered, but they found a driver right away. My car was picked up in Kansas City on Monday evening and delivered Wednesday night to my home in California in perfect shape. The driver was communicative and efficient. I couldn’t believe how fast and easy the process was. Thank you, Sherpa!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“This is the second vehicle I have had delivered by Sherpa. They are fast. Very fast. Compared to others I have used in the past which took much longer to lock in on a driver Sherpa had one in no time and was very good about communicating on both ends. Letting me know ahead of time everything. When my jeep arrived on this side the battery had died on it because it was several years old. Alex jump started it and got me taken care of. Very helpful and friendly. Pricing is outstanding as well. I will use again.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“This process of shipping my vehicle couldn’t have been any better than it was. From the time I made my first call to Sherpa and spoke with a very professional and knowledgeable customer service agent lady to the gentleman who picked up and delivered my vehicle. Only thing I would’ve changed was I was only given a 30 minute heads up that my vehicle was going to be picked up. I had to leave work to make it happen but it all worked out. Thank you so much for a great experience!”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Kansas City, KS. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Kansas City. Enclosed trailers offer extra protection but cost about 50% more and may have longer delivery times. They’re typically only necessary for high-value or classic cars.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship to Kansas City than standard cars due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Route Popularity: Kansas City’s central location and major highways like I-70 and I-35 make it a relatively accessible destination, potentially lowering shipping costs compared to more remote locations.
  • Seasonality: Car shipping prices to Kansas City may fluctuate with seasons. Summer months and January often see higher demand and prices. Winter weather in Kansas City can also affect transport times and costs.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to lower costs when shipping a car to Kansas City. Expedited services are available but come at a premium.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Kansas City car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates when transporting your car to or from Kansas City, KS. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility for negotiating prices.
  • Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-70 or I-35. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall car shipping expense.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove all personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your Kansas City auto transport. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer when demand for car shipping services is high. Planning your Kansas City, KS auto transport during off-peak times may result in more competitive rates.

Reviews from our Kansas Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Kansas customers:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I called several companies and decided to use Sherpa. I read a lot of reviews saying that there were a lot of scammers out there adding cost at delivery, and Sherpa has a price guarantee, which turned out we had to use. The reviews online also put them on top, even though I could find some that were less expensive and some that were more expensive. Their reps were very responsive. In fact, when I hadn’t heard something for a while and because it was gonna be the next week that my pickup was supposed to be, I called and they said that’s not uncommon. They assured me that everything would be okay. The 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was shipped uncovered. They said they had covered as an option, but it was more costly. Sherpa subcontracts to various vendors and it might have been the first time that they used the vendor they ended up with, but it was fine. The only thing was the number of hours in advance for telling me when the car would be picked up or dropped off weren’t accurate, but they were all within the same day. For example, when my brother got a call from the driver, he said he could drop it off in an hour, and my brother said, “Well, I got an MRI. I’m not gonna be here.” However, it wasn’t a problem because it turned out my brother’s spouse was able to be home and they came and it worked out fine.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had an easy experience with Sherpa. I called and everybody was responsive. The transport went just fine. I’m 100% satisfied. Todd was very nice. The car got there perfectly and it was when he said. He ran a little late, but he was in contact with me. He picked it up in Calabasas, California at my apartment and dropped it off at my brother’s. The car got here before I did. It took two days. When he picked it up, I said, “This is my baby. Take good care.” I was able to put some hats in there that weren’t gonna be easy to transport in the move. I asked him if that was okay and he was fine. I filled up the back seat with all my hats. They all got there just fine. The delivery was good. My brother lives on a major street on Swift Avenue in Kansas City. Todd showed up and my brother had the cash to pay him. He backed the car out and my brother put it in the garage. Everything went great.”

Google
★★★★★

“Moving my car from Kansas City to Seattle, Washington was quick. The truck was in Kansas City before I was. They waited until I arrived to load the car. It took them two days to travel 1800 miles. The car was delivered unmarred at 7:00 AM.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“We had Sherpa transport our cars from the Kansas City area. It took two and a half days or so to get to us. The driver was very friendly. We are in a residential area. He dropped it off. He got the two cars involved off his truck before he rang my doorbell. So, everything was there. Then he told me, “Your cars are here.” They were already unloaded. So, I was very impressed. Also, the final pricing was right on. It was the price that was quoted.”

Google
★★★★★

“I used this company to transport my car from Kansas to Florida. I was very skeptical going into this process, but SHERPA did exactly what they said they were going to do. They found a company for the price they quoted me, I paid exactly what I was expected to pay and my car arrived on time and in perfect condition. I highly recommend this company to anyone especially if you don’t know which company to trust.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Kansas City, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Kansas. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
