- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Indiana customers say about Sherpa:
“The transport was from New Jersey to Bloomington, Indiana and took exactly the days that I needed. It even came a day earlier than I expected which worked out fine. The driver came the day I wanted and delivered it exactly the day I wanted. I needed it Friday and the delivery on Tuesday. He came Thursday afternoon and delivered it Tuesday morning for me.”
“The fact that Sherpa paid to be with ConsumerAffairs was part of the selling for me. I had one gentleman who said, “We don’t need them.” They didn’t need the rating. I told him that just for his attitude, I was not gonna choose their company and thanked him for his time. It was a simple yes or no question on whether they were rated. He didn’t need to bash them. Sherpa did a great job. They sent videos of the car as did I before it left my home. They came right to my house, picked up the car in my neighborhood, and shipped it all the way to Oregon from Indiana.”
“The quote she gave was also a competitive from the different brokers I spoke with, and it was 100% accurate. Moreover, the actual contractor they picked was perfect. He was on time and courteous. He was very thorough from the time he picked the vehicle up. He walked around with me. He showed me and told me what to expect. He was very professional. He called me that morning that he was already there to drop off my car and he pulled the car off the truck into my complex.”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Indiana Car Shipping Prices
- Distance and Route: Indiana’s central location impacts shipping costs. Routes along major interstates like I-65, I-69, and I-70 are typically more affordable than rural areas. Shipping to or from cities like Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, or Evansville is often cheaper than remote locations.
- Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in Indiana. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier, offers protection from Indiana’s varied weather, including occasional snow and rain.
- Seasonal Factors: Indiana’s climate can affect car shipping prices. Winter months may see higher rates due to challenging road conditions, while summer often brings increased demand and prices.
- Vehicle Size and Type: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks common in Indiana may cost more to ship than compact cars. The weight and dimensions of your vehicle directly impact the price.
- Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can reduce costs. Rush services for quick Indiana car shipping will increase the price.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to transport. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost of auto transport in Indiana.
Understanding these factors can help you optimize your Indiana car shipping experience. For more detailed information on cost factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. To learn more about choosing between open and enclosed transport, visit our open vs. enclosed car shipping guide.
Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Indiana car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This gives carriers time to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple pickups in cities like Indianapolis or Fort Wayne.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is the most cost-effective option for most vehicles. While enclosed transport is necessary for some cars, open carriers offer more flexibility and lower rates.
- Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-65, I-69, or I-70. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and lower your overall car shipping price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before transport. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Indiana car shipping. Carriers may offer discounts for filling empty spots on their trucks.
- Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to or from Indiana can be affected by weather conditions, especially during winter months. Planning your shipment during milder seasons may result in more competitive pricing and faster transit times.

Indiana Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When planning your move to or from Indiana, it’s crucial to understand the state’s vehicle requirements and regulations. Indiana uses the E-ZPass system for tolls, so if you’re relocating, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to Indiana, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 60 days of establishing residency. The process involves visiting a Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and a completed application form.
Indiana doesn’t require annual vehicle inspections, but emissions testing is mandatory in Lake and Porter counties. When shipping your car to Indiana, ensure it meets the state’s equipment requirements, including functional headlights, taillights, and turn signals. The Hoosier State experiences all four seasons, so consider this when preparing your vehicle for transport, especially during harsh winters.
As you settle in, you’ll need to set up utilities. Major providers include Duke Energy for electricity and Indiana American Water for water services. For internet, popular options are Xfinity, AT&T, and Spectrum. Don’t forget to update your driver’s license within 60 days and register to vote at your local county clerk’s office.
If you’re moving away from Indiana, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify the BMV of your address change. When choosing a car shipping company for your relocation, consider one familiar with Indiana’s major interstates like I-65, I-70, and I-69 to ensure smooth auto transport.
Whether you’re using car shipping services to bring your vehicle to the Indianapolis 500 or relocating to enjoy Indiana’s beautiful state parks, understanding these local regulations and tips will make your transition smoother. Remember, when you ship a car to or from Indiana, choosing a reliable car transport provider is key to ensuring your vehicle arrives safely at its new home.
Indiana Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Indiana?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Indiana. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Indiana?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Indiana?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Indiana?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Indiana
When planning car shipping to or from Indiana, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse seasonal weather patterns. Indiana experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics. During winter months (December through February), snowfall and icy conditions are common, especially in northern Indiana. If you’re shipping a car during this time, ensure your vehicle is equipped with all-season tires, as carriers cannot transport vehicles with snow chains. Additionally, choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to prevent issues with icy inclines.
Spring and fall in Indiana bring milder temperatures but can be unpredictable with sudden rain showers. When using car shipping services during these seasons, make sure your vehicle is clean and free of debris to avoid potential damage during transport. Summer months (June through August) can be hot and humid, so if you’re shipping a car to Indiana during this time, consider placing a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial for efficient Indiana car shipping. If you’re near college towns like Bloomington or West Lafayette, avoid scheduling auto transport during move-in and move-out periods (typically late August and early May) when demand and prices spike. For the best rates and availability, aim to ship your car a few weeks before or after these peak times.
Lastly, if you’re storing items in your vehicle during transport, be mindful of temperature-sensitive belongings. Extreme cold can cause liquids to freeze and expand, while summer heat can melt or damage certain items. By considering these factors and planning accordingly, you’ll ensure a smooth and stress-free car shipping experience to or from the Hoosier State.
Car Shipping for College Students in Indiana
When considering car shipping to Indiana for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at universities. Most Indiana schools require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. For example, at Indiana University Bloomington, students must obtain a parking pass, with rates varying based on lot location. Purdue University also mandates vehicle registration and offers different permit options for residents and commuters.
Storage during breaks is another important factor. Many campuses provide long-term parking options for students leaving their cars during winter or summer breaks. However, it’s wise to check with your specific school, as policies may differ. Some off-campus apartments include parking, while others may require additional fees or street parking.
Indiana’s weather can be challenging for drivers, especially during winter. Consider equipping your car with all-season or winter tires for better traction. Before shipping your car to Indiana, ensure your auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage are valid in the state. This preparation can save you headaches down the road.
Lastly, if you’re using car transport services to bring your vehicle to campus, plan ahead. Auto transport companies often have busy schedules during the back-to-school season. Booking your car shipping well in advance can help ensure your vehicle arrives on time for the start of the semester.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Indiana
Indiana is home to several military installations, making it a key destination for service members and their families. Grissom Air Reserve Base, located in Peru, is a major facility for the Air Force Reserve Command. For those using car shipping services to this base, it’s important to note that on-base parking is available, but limited. Many personnel opt to live in nearby communities where parking is generally unrestricted.
The Naval Support Activity Crane, situated in the southwestern part of the state, is another significant installation. When shipping a car to this area, military members should be aware that while there’s ample parking on base, vehicle registration with the state of Indiana is required within 60 days of arrival.
For those stationed at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, the base offers temporary vehicle storage for deployed service members. This can be incredibly helpful for those needing auto transport services during their deployment.
Regardless of the specific installation, military families will find numerous support resources in Indiana. The state hosts several commissaries and exchanges, offering significant savings on groceries and other necessities. Additionally, the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs provides various services and benefits to active duty personnel and veterans alike.
At Sherpa Auto Transport, we’re proud to offer a $50 military discount on our car transport services as a token of our appreciation. We thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. Whether you’re moving to or from Indiana, our team is here to ensure your car shipping experience is smooth and stress-free.
Reviews from our Indiana Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Indiana customers:
“When I called, I received a call back within a short period of time and when I emailed, I got a response via email quickly. So, the reps were responsive. The pickup was in Valparaiso, Indiana and it was to be delivered to Palm Desert, California. I was given a three-day pickup time but they said that the driver would call me about when it would actually be picked up. And I was given a window of five to seven days when it would be delivered. The drivers showed up on time. My house is on a small street and you have to make several very sharp turns in order to get there. The drivers were unable to get the truck to my house so they parked it a couple of blocks away and I just drove the car down there to them. They were careful with the car. They drove off and I was not concerned about the car when they took it away. Based upon when they picked up the car, it could have been delivered to California before I got there myself to receive it. So, I asked the driver to deliver it to a friend of mine who lived not too far away, and he agreed to do that. Sherpa is reliable and competitive on price with other companies.”
“Sherpa was the best. They were credible. They stood out from the others. They respond right away. They gave me a good price and did not give me any problems. We had them ship our Chrysler Crossfire sports car. I had one problem when we were trying to define the pickup, who`s picking it up and when and when is this going to happen. The first person I interacted with was not very sympathetic to my situation. But after that, it was much better. It`s initially not so good, but it straightened right up. Sherpa`s rate was affordable and they stuck to it. I`m very happy with the quote. I was afraid I was gonna have to pay a lot of money to ship my car and it was affordable. It was a great value. They told me when the delivery was going to happen. Then the person called, and he showed up and unloaded the car perfectly. It was very simple. Overall, Sherpa is very user-friendly. It was efficient and I got exactly what I wanted. Their reps were very professional and I was able to communicate with them when I needed to.”
“Sherpa gave me the best option for what I needed and was very upfront with me. I told them what my concerns were and they held to that. They told me everything that I should do and that I should pay by cash or certified check. I had to give them $250 and pay the rest to the driver when he got there. When I got ready to give the driver the money, he called his boss and gave her to me. She said I was going to need to pay $750 instead of $625. I told her I was quoted a price and that was all I was gonna pay. She called Sherpa back and Sherpa stuck up for me. I read about avoiding companies that want to give you discounts and gift cards because it`s something to get you in the back door. A couple of them did that but Sherpa didn`t do that at all. When I initially gave them the location of the car, it was in the middle of Indiana so they gave me a price for that. Once I talked to the seller and found out his actual location, they changed their quote because it was more in line with truck routes. They could`ve kept me to my initial quote, but they went by what the actual distance was. I appreciated that.”
“Second time using Sherpa for our auto transport needs between Indianapolis area and Seattle. Both times have been fantastic! I`d recommend them to anyone.”
“The car made the trip from Indiana to Pennsylvania in excellent condition. The driver was very professional and I would definitely use Sherpa again.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Indiana, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Indiana. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
