Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

“Scheduling my vehicle to be shipped was fast and easy. My pickup date was on my earliest date selected and delivered faster than I expected, which was a plus! Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Meridian, ID plays a significant role in car shipping costs. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car affect shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks from popular Meridian dealerships may cost more to transport than compact cars.
  • Transport Method: Open car transport is the most common and affordable option for shipping to or from Meridian. Enclosed transport, while pricier and potentially slower, offers extra protection from Idaho’s varied weather conditions.
  • Season: Auto transport prices in Meridian can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter shipping might be affected by Idaho’s snowy conditions.
  • Route Popularity: Shipping along major routes like I-84, which passes near Meridian, can be more cost-effective than transporting to remote areas of Idaho.
  • Timing Flexibility: If you’re flexible with your pickup and delivery dates, you may find better rates for car shipping to or from Meridian. Rush services typically cost more.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Non-running cars require special equipment, increasing the cost of auto transport services in Meridian.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Meridian car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-84, which runs just north of Meridian. This can help reduce fuel costs for carriers.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of less busy shipping times.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to and from Meridian may be more affordable during off-peak seasons when demand is lower.
  • Opt for door-to-terminal: While Sherpa doesn’t offer terminal-to-terminal services, choosing door-to-terminal or terminal-to-door can sometimes reduce costs compared to full door-to-door service.

Meridian, Idaho Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Meridian?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Meridian. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Meridian?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Meridian?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Meridian?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Meridian

When planning car shipping to or from Meridian, ID, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal weather patterns that can impact your auto transport experience. Meridian experiences all four seasons, each with its unique challenges for car shipping services.

Winter Considerations: Meridian’s winters can bring snow and ice, affecting car transport logistics. If you’re shipping a car during this season:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t accommodate them.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
  • Remove any items that might freeze and expand, potentially causing damage.

Summer Precautions: Meridian’s summers can be hot, so when shipping a car during warmer months:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
  • Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp.
  • Consider scheduling early morning or evening pickups to avoid peak heat.

Peak Seasons: Meridian car shipping can get busier during certain times:

  • Late August to early September: College students returning to nearby universities.

“WHAT A WONDERFUL RESULT!! WONDERFUL TRANSPORT FROM Tahoe to Idaho!! IF I EVER NEED ANOTHER TRANSPORT, I WILL BE USING SHERPA AGAIN!!! They were punctual, and courteous. They took great and special care of our 2017 Grand Sport Convertible Corvette, and our 2016 Lifted Jeep Rubicon. They were very detailed from time of pick-up to drop off. Took pics, made you aware if there were any blemishes, or chips or scratches. I have great confidence in them. They came through, unlike the previous company I booked with who didn’t show up, and then cussed me out, for cancelling with them after they couldn’t follow through on the designated time.”

“My car broke down in Idaho. I took it to a garage and they told me that it would take 30 days. I couldn’t afford to stay there for 30 days. So, I did some research online and Sherpa came out on top. There were a lot of reviews on it. I checked out several transport companies, and they stood out. So, I chose them. I did not know Sherpa until I needed a transport company. I wasn’t even sure how the process worked. So, they explained it to me. I wondered why I was getting all these calls from everybody. There is a broker and then they contract with the closest transport company, and it’s a beautiful system. I’m impressed. I set the transport up online and then I got a call. They asked for my information. So, I gave them the information and where the car was and when I wanted it picked up. The other companies would take several days. I needed somebody right away. I spoke to several people. We were going back and forth. When they called me, I said, “Okay, I have to check out some information, but I’ll call you back.” So, when I called back, I spoke to a different person. They were all very nice, very accommodating and professional. I made arrangements for the transport company to pick my car up. We were texting back and forth. “I’m at this location and we’ll pick it up at this time.” I was impressed. I had been in communication with the driver. I left Idaho on a Wednesday. They picked the car up on Thursday and delivered it on Friday. He called me ahead of time and asked me what the neighborhood was like. If he couldn’t get the truck in, then he would just have to park the truck and drive the car to my location. I said, “Well, there’s plenty of room. There’s lots of trucks that come through here.” He just drove up and parked his vehicle. It was huge. It was very long. It was covered, which was something I did not expect. He just opened up the back and pulled out the car and drove it into my driveway. Then he did check and took pictures and made sure everything was as it was when he picked it up. Except for the fact that it was making a terrible sound, it was good. It was just as I left it.”

“Awesome. They contracted with Diesel Auto Transport and our Tundra made it from PA to ID in 2 days in great condition. Very professional and detail oriented. No hidden fees which is what I was worried about. Absolutely would recommend to friends, I’ve heard nightmare stories about other carriers.”

“I researched shipping companies for weeks before I decided on Sherpa. They were very professional and everything they promised was exactly the way they said it would be. They sent me a message every day to keep me updated. The driver was very helpful and worked with me on where to drop off my car. He was very nice and professional. My car was in perfect shape, I was surprised and pleased to get it so quickly. I would definitely recommend Sherpa.”

Yelp

“This is an effective and efficient transportation company. I moved my Toyota 4RUNNER from San Diego to Arizona and the from Arizona to Idaho and both tines, this company exceed my expectations. Good customer service, great rates and fast delivery. Big thank you.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Meridian, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Idaho. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
