What our Idaho customers say about Sherpa:
“I picked Sherpa because they were the only ones that answered the phone and said their company name and they have the price lock thing where people aren’t gonna get charged anything extra. The Sherpa guy was nice. Overall, Sherpa did exactly what they said for the price they said they would and they were great people to deal with. The driver is not one of theirs because they contract those guys, but he was over-the-top nice in Idaho.”
“I was actually having a hard time trying to find a reliable company to ship my car (Audi A7) from Florida to Idaho. Tried Sherpa and was (seriously) able to get my car picked up the next day and shipped in a week for a good price. Car arrived in the exact same condition minus some dirt that went away with a car wash. Driver was really nice. Overall, very satisfied with the service.”
“This is an effective and efficient transportation company. I moved my Toyota 4RUNNER from San Diego to Arizona and then from Arizona to Idaho and both times, this company exceeded my expectations. Good customer service, great rates and fast delivery. Big thank you.”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Idaho Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Idaho’s location in the Northwest affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as transporting from Idaho to the East Coast, typically result in higher prices due to increased fuel consumption and time on the road.
- Route: Idaho’s major interstates like I-84 and I-15 are preferred by auto transporters. Shipping to or from locations near these highways is often more cost-effective than remote areas in the state’s mountainous regions.
- Season: Idaho’s harsh winters can impact car shipping prices. Snow and ice on roads may lead to higher costs during winter months, while summer tends to be busier for auto transport, potentially affecting rates.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle influence shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Idaho’s rugged terrain, may cost more to transport than compact cars.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical option for most Idaho car shipping needs. Enclosed transport, while pricier and potentially slower, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Idaho’s varied weather conditions.
- Timing: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to more competitive prices. Rush orders or specific date requirements may increase the cost of shipping your car to or from Idaho.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your Idaho car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Idaho car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is typically the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Idaho. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers greater flexibility and lower rates.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major Idaho interstates like I-84 or I-15. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offering flexibility in your pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Idaho car shipping needs. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more competitive pricing options.
- Consider seasonal timing: Idaho’s weather can impact car shipping costs. Avoiding peak winter months when road conditions are challenging may result in more favorable rates for your auto transport.

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors such as your vehicle type, pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa, and you’ll only be charged when a carrier is assigned.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car, document any existing damage, remove personal items, and perform basic maintenance. For Idaho-specific considerations, ensure your vehicle is prepared for potential extreme weather conditions, especially if shipping during winter months.
4. Meet the Carrier: Sherpa provides door-to-door transport, so you’ll meet the carrier at the agreed pickup location. In Idaho, this could be anywhere from bustling Boise to rural mountain towns, so be prepared for potential accessibility challenges.

6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly and pay the remaining balance. Be aware that Idaho’s weather can be unpredictable, so flexibility may be needed for the delivery date.

Idaho Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Idaho or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Idaho doesn’t have toll roads, so there’s no need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does require vehicle inspections for emissions in certain counties. Ada and Canyon counties mandate emissions testing for vehicles manufactured after 1981. Be sure to check with your local DMV for specific requirements.
Registering your vehicle in Idaho is straightforward. You’ll need to visit a county assessor’s office within 90 days of establishing residency. Bring your out-of-state title, registration, and proof of insurance. Idaho requires all vehicles to be insured with minimum liability coverage.
When moving to Idaho, setting up utilities is a priority. Major electricity providers include Idaho Power and Avista Utilities. For water services, contact your local municipality. Internet providers vary by region, with options like CenturyLink, Sparklight, and Ziply Fiber available in many areas.
Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll your children in local schools. Idaho’s Department of Education website offers resources for finding schools in your area. Library cards are typically free and can be obtained at your local branch with proof of residency.
If you’re leaving Idaho, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify relevant authorities of your move. When using car shipping services to transport your vehicle out of state, consider Idaho’s climate. Harsh winters can affect road conditions, so plan your auto transport accordingly.
Idaho’s diverse terrain, from mountainous regions to expansive plains, means that car transport routes may vary. Major highways like I-84 and I-90 are common for car shipping companies. When shipping a car to or from Idaho, be aware that weather conditions can impact delivery times, especially during winter months.
Idaho Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Idaho?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Idaho. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Idaho?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Idaho?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Idaho?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Idaho
When planning car shipping to or from Idaho, it’s crucial to consider the state’s seasonal weather patterns. Idaho experiences distinct seasons, each with unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, Idaho car shipping can be tricky due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport
- Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping
- Avoid storing items that may freeze and expand in the vehicle
Summer brings its own set of considerations for car transport in Idaho:
- Use a sunshade to protect the car’s interior from intense heat
- Remove heat-sensitive items from the vehicle before shipping
- Consider enclosed auto transport for added protection from sun and dust
Timing is also crucial when shipping a car to or from Idaho. Be aware of these peak periods:
- Late August/early September: College students returning to campuses
- Spring and fall: Snowbirds moving to and from warmer climates
- Summer months: Increased tourism and relocation activity
To avoid higher rates and potential delays, consider scheduling your Idaho car shipping a few weeks before or after these busy times. By planning ahead and working with a reputable car shipping company, you can ensure a smooth and efficient auto transport experience in the Gem State.
Car Shipping for College Students in Idaho
When considering car shipping to Idaho for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at universities. Most Idaho schools require parking permits, which students can purchase online or at campus offices. For example, Boise State University offers various parking options, including reserved, general, and economy lots. Students should register their vehicles and obtain passes early, as spaces can be limited.
Many off-campus apartments near Idaho universities provide parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For on-campus housing, parking availability varies by institution. Students planning to use auto transport services should inquire about long-term parking options, especially for winter breaks when they might leave their cars behind.
Idaho’s winter weather is a crucial consideration for students shipping a car to the state. Snow tires or all-season tires are highly recommended, particularly in mountainous areas. Students should also verify that their insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to their new location in Idaho.
When using car shipping services to transport vehicles to Idaho universities, timing is key. Schedule your auto transport to arrive close to move-in day to avoid storage issues. Many car shipping companies offer flexible drop-off and pick-up options, which can be invaluable for students navigating busy schedules. Remember, proper planning for Idaho car shipping can make your college transition smoother and stress-free.

“I had my daughters car transported from SA, Texas to Idaho and Sherpa is THE BEST!!! Always friendly, informative, and TOP NOTCH customer service!!! The company that they got to transport the car was equally amazing! The gentleman from Horizon Carriers had excellent communication, showed up when he said he would, and was detailed in checking out the car. The car left TX on a Monday at about 9:45 pm and arrived in N. Idaho on Wednesday at about 3:45 pm! The carrier was friendly and customer service was excellent! This was our first time transporting a car so we were nervous, but Sherpa made it a truly stress-free experience!!! Thank you for caring about your customers and putting their needs first!”
“I was impressed with the first phone call. They are very friendly and yet right to the point. Their quote was also very competitive so for these 2 reason, I gave them a try. I’m so glad I did. They kept their word at every point. My car was picked up on a Wednesday in Central Florida and it was delivered to rural southern Idaho on Friday evening, yes in the same week. I will use them again and I strongly recommend them.”
“I was so impressed with the service. They gave me a mail in rebate on top of the best price I could find. They actually saw that I called and didn’t leave a message and called me back because they saw my number on caller id and wanted to make sure they helped me and didn’t just wait for me to call back.”
“This was the first time we ever shipped a car, and we couldnt be more satisfied. I chose Sherpa Auto Transport because of its rating with BBB. Trust me, I look ****** different companies and read reviews. The driver was professional and knowledgeable, and delivered the car in what Id say was record time.”
“Awesome. They contracted with Diesel Auto Transport and our Tundra made it from PA to Idaho in 2 days in great condition. Very professional and detail oriented. No hidden fees which is what I was worried about. Absolutely would recommend to friends, I’ve heard nightmare stories about other carriers.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Idaho, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Idaho. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
