Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Suwanee customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I was satisfied with the price that was quoted, the way everything went and the way I communicated in particular, which was one of the things I read a lot about people having a hard time to communicate with the company. It all worked out very well for me, so I’m very happy. The broker that I talked with was very nice and answered all my questions. I knew what questions to ask at that point in time and the range that I was willing to accept. I wasn’t looking for getting the absolute cheapest. I was looking for somebody I could trust and that was reputable. I got a decent price on it, but I didn’t know if that was the absolute rock-bottom. But Sherpa’s price seemed fair, so I got that. I was happy with it and that person met that price easily, and there were no problems. I had a very good agent. Our delivery situation was a bit complicated because I’m operating out of North Carolina, but the car was in the suburbs of Atlanta, and it had to be delivered in New Mexico, and I wasn’t there at the delivery. And so, it was all done by phone and there was a bit of a hiccup at the beginning because I was told that the driver would come at a certain time. But we didn’t hear from him, and so I started calling around. And then I finally understood that he was not in Atlanta when I had thought he might be in Atlanta at that time. So, he still had to fill up his truck. When I understood that, I talked to his people at that office, the dispatcher, and they explained that to me. We were very patient. He was supposed to come on a Saturday and he came first thing Monday morning. But we were the last to be loaded on the truck because I was told that it would take four days, and it did. We were the last in and the first out, the way their schedule worked out. The delivery driver was very good. I got a lot of email information from Sherpa to do this and that, and we did that, took all the pictures and sent them by email to everybody. It was done very well because my son was at the beginning when they loaded it up, so he took a bunch of pictures with his phone and then sent me the pictures. I forwarded them to where the guy was gonna be at the exit, and then he knew what to do. It was an old car, so there were some issues with it, but nothing happened to the car that was Sherpa’s fault.”

Google
★★★★★

“I am sooo thankful I saw a TikTok mentioning this company. I was in the process of shipping my car from California to Georgia and all of the car brokers I experienced were trying to scam me by offering a low upfront cost and then the day before pick up say they had an issue with a driver and I need to pay more. I called Sherpa and they told me that this is a common scam in the transport business and reassured me that while the price they offered me is high, it will remain the price with no surprises. I did have a minor issue with communication with the actual truck driver picking up my car but it was solved very quickly. I highly suggest Sherpa.”

Yelp

“EXCELLENT SERVICE!!! After searching for numerous auto transport companies to transport a vehicle from Georgia to California, I decided to go with Sherpa. I was in contact with Dylan throughout the entire process from the beginning of the quote until pick up day. He managed to schedule within a weeks notice without any issues. The quote never changed, not like other companies kept giving me a different rate each time I called. Car arrived within the time frame provided. I will definitely use them again.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The distance between Suwanee, GA and your destination greatly affects car shipping costs. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer journeys.
  • Transport Type: Open auto transport is the most common and cost-effective option for shipping cars to or from Suwanee. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value or classic vehicles against Georgia’s occasional severe weather.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Route Accessibility: Suwanee’s proximity to major highways like I-85 can help reduce shipping costs. However, if your pickup or delivery location is in a less accessible area, it may increase the price.
  • Seasonal Demand: Auto transport prices in Suwanee can fluctuate based on seasonal demand. Summer months and January often see higher rates due to increased relocation activity.
  • Fuel Prices: Fluctuations in fuel costs can impact car shipping rates to and from Suwanee, as carriers adjust their prices accordingly.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be easily loaded. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Suwanee car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping services provide the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Suwanee, GA. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers greater flexibility and lower rates.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways like I-85 or GA-400. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates liability concerns for personal belongings during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering flexibility in pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Suwanee car shipping needs. Consider a range of dates rather than a specific day to increase your options.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport rates may vary depending on the season. If possible, plan your car shipping to or from Suwanee during off-peak times to potentially save on costs.

Suwanee, Georgia Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Suwanee?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Suwanee. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Suwanee?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Suwanee?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Suwanee?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“After reading so many horrible reviews about so many different companies out there. I am so happy to say Sherpa Auto Transport made shipping my car so effortless. When you go online to get your first quote, I was bombarded with so many different companies trying to lowball you and trying to get your business. There are so many shady companies out there, please please please read the reviews before book. I sought out Sherpa Transport after reading their reviews on BBB, and let me tell you they did not disappoint. My car was shipped from ATL to Washington state. They called me confirming everything. If I had any questions, their customer service was great. I would definitely ship my car again through this company.”

“Loved this company for my AZ to GA car transport! Decided to use Sherpa Auto Transport since the reviews were great. Started the online process and got my quote right then and there, which was valid for a day or 2. Pricing was super competitive and they offered a rebate (currently still waiting for that) but the process was super simple! Sherpa called me the week of my move and confirmed they had a carrier. The entire process was smooth from the signing up, to pick up and car drop off. And I like how they reimbursed for a car wash! I would definitely use this company again.”

“First time shipping a vehicle, and with an expedited pickup requirement. Based on their high review ratings, we didn’t bother with contacting other companies. We’re very glad we chose Sherpa! They were helpful, professional, communicative and reasonably priced making for an easy process from start to finish. The dispatcher and driver assigned our transport were terrific! Our car was delivered across country timely and with care. Would definitely recommend and use Sherpa again.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Suwanee, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Georgia. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
