Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Atlanta customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I called Sherpa and they reactivated the bid and even though it was some weeks later, they gave us the original price that they had quoted us. It was seamless. We made arrangements, paid our deposit and left the car with some friends because all of this was last minute and Sherpa gave us a pickup window of several days. They notified the friends when the driver was coming to pick up the vehicle. They took pictures. It was very well done and they came super fast. I was surprised. It was two and a half days, maybe, to transport from Jonesboro, Georgia, which is a suburb of Atlanta, all the way out here to Gilbert, Arizona, which is a suburb of the Phoenix Metro area.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“We were going from Atlanta to New Jersey. One thing that I appreciated about Sherpa was that you give them your dates, they tell you if that window works, and you pay them so much upfront as soon as your driver is assigned and the rest goes to the driver. But they have a policy where if they can’t get a driver assigned, and you’re kind of in the middle or near the end of your window, they will take what you’re supposed to pay to them and start pushing that towards the driver side to incentivize somebody to want to take the route, which ended up happening to us.”

Google
★★★★★

“Very Good experience with Sherpa! I had never shipped a car before. I was about to go with another company that was supposed to be one of the best. The other company had been “negotiating†for me for several weeks with carriers and came back with a few offers that seemed high. I was about to commit, but I checked the internet once more and found Sherpa and read all the overwhelmingly positive reviews. I called them and they gave me a price $300 less than the other quote and offered a $50 rebate on top of that. The salesman (Dylan) was super nice and explained everything. Only trouble I had was the actual carrier I used showed up way later than they told me, but other than that, everything was perfect! Atlanta to Los Angeles.”

Factors that affect Atlanta Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Atlanta. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but Atlanta’s central location in the Southeast can be advantageous for many routes.
  • Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Atlanta. Enclosed carriers offer extra protection but are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, generally cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Atlanta’s mild climate means car shipping is less affected by extreme weather. However, summer months and January tend to see higher demand and prices for auto transport services.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Atlanta’s extensive highway network, including I-75, I-85, and I-20, makes it easily accessible. Urban locations in Atlanta are typically cheaper for pickup or delivery compared to rural areas in Georgia.
  • Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window, such as Sherpa’s five-day option, can lead to more competitive pricing for your Atlanta car shipment.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles that can roll, brake, and steer are less expensive to ship to or from Atlanta compared to inoperable ones requiring special equipment.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Atlanta. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Atlanta car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially for standard vehicles.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major interstates like I-75, I-85, or I-285. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates. Carriers may offer discounts for shipments that fit well into their existing schedules.
  • Consider off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your auto transport during less busy times. Avoiding peak moving seasons in Atlanta, such as summer months or end-of-semester periods, can lead to more competitive pricing.

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the Car Shipping Process in Atlanta, GA

When it comes to car shipping in Atlanta, understanding the process is key to a smooth experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate auto transport in the Peach State:

  • Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free quote from a trusted car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. Factors such as vehicle type, distance, and shipping method will affect your price.
  • Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, Atlanta’s busy highways and unpredictable weather can impact scheduling, so book early.
  • Prepare Your Vehicle: Before shipping your car, give it a thorough wash and inspection. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full. For more detailed instructions, check out our comprehensive guide on how to ship a car.
  • Consider Atlanta’s Climate: When preparing your vehicle, keep in mind Atlanta’s hot, humid summers and mild winters. Ensure your car’s fluids are topped off and the battery is in good condition.
  • Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you’ll meet the carrier to hand over your keys and complete an inspection. In Atlanta, be prepared for potential traffic delays, especially during rush hours on I-75, I-85, or I-285.
  • Track Your Shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Atlanta’s central location means your vehicle might pass through several states, depending on its destination.

By following these steps, you’ll ensure a hassle-free car shipping experience to or from Atlanta. Remember, whether you’re relocating to the bustling city center or the peaceful suburbs, professional car transport services can make your move easier.

Atlanta Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to or from Atlanta, GA, it’s crucial to understand local regulations and prepare for your move. Atlanta’s unique climate and bustling urban environment require special considerations for car transport and relocation.

First, let’s address vehicle-specific requirements. Georgia doesn’t have a state vehicle inspection program, but emissions testing is mandatory in 13 metro Atlanta counties. If you’re moving to Atlanta, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days. The process involves providing proof of ownership, insurance, and paying applicable fees. For toll roads, Atlanta uses the Peach Pass system. Consider removing your current toll transponder to avoid unintended charges during auto transport.

When settling in Atlanta, you’ll need to set up utilities. Georgia Power is the primary electricity provider, while Atlanta Watershed Management handles water services. For internet, popular options include AT&T, Xfinity, and Google Fiber. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in local schools. The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System offers free library cards to residents.

If you’re leaving Atlanta, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify relevant parties of your move. When choosing a car shipping company, consider Atlanta’s hot, humid summers and mild winters. Enclosed car shipping services might be preferable to protect your vehicle from sudden weather changes.

Atlanta’s extensive highway system, including I-75, I-85, and I-285 (the Perimeter), makes it a hub for car transport. However, traffic can be challenging, so plan accordingly when scheduling your auto transport pickup or delivery. By understanding these local nuances, you’ll ensure a smoother transition whether you’re shipping a car to or from the vibrant city of Atlanta, GA.

Atlanta, Georgia Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Atlanta?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Atlanta. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Atlanta?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Atlanta?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Atlanta?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“I initially contacted Sherpa to get pricing to transport my vehicle from Savannah, GA to Vallejo, CA on 12/01/22. I spoke with Amanii the best customer service agent EVER! Unfortunately, I chose a different carrier because they gave me a lower quote. My vehicle was not picked up in January as promised. I arrived in Vallejo on 01/08/23, I contacted Sherpa again on 01/09/23, spoke with Amanii, he scheduled my transport and I received my vehicle on 01/17/23!! The carrier was amazing. I would highly recommend Sherpa.”

“After reading so many horrible reviews about so many different companies out there. I am so happy to say Sherpa Auto Transport made shipping my car so effortless. When you go online to get your first quote, I was bombarded with so many different companies trying to lowball you and trying to get your business. There are so many shady companies out there, please please please read the reviews before book. I sought out Sherpa Transport after reading their reviews on BBB, and let me tell you they did not disappoint. My car was shipped from ATL to Washington state. They called me confirming everything. If I had any questions, their customer service was great. I would definitely ship my car again through this company.”

Google

“Outstanding experience with Sherpa. I reached out and received a quote hundreds cheaper then competitors. I shipped my M6 from Tempe Arizona to Atlanta Georgia and received it in 3 days. The carrier communicated with and was actually a day earlier. I would recommend them to anyone needing to transport their vehicle!”

Yelp

“EXCELLENT SERVICE!!! After searching for numerous auto transport companies to transport a vehicle from Georgia to California, I decided to go with Sherpa. I was in contact with Dylan throughout the entire process from the beginning of the quote until pick up day. He managed to schedule within a weeks notice without any issues. The quote never changed, not like other companies kept giving me a different rate each time I called. Car arrived within the time frame provided. I will definitely use them again.”

Google
★★★★★

“I am sooo thankful I saw a TikTok mentioning this company. I was in the process of shipping my car from California to Georgia and all of the car brokers I experienced were trying to scam me by offering a low upfront cost and then the day before pick up say they had an issue with a driver and I need to pay more. I called Sherpa and they told me that this is a common scam in the transport business and reassured me that while the price they offered me is high, it will remain the price with no surprises. I did have a minor issue with communication with the actual truck driver picking up my car but it was solved very quickly. I highly suggest Sherpa. And for anyone who is looking at other companies reviews, make sure to review the accounts that are leaving the Google reviews. This other company I found had their own employees create new Google accounts to make bogus 5 star reviews. Do you research and go with Sherpa for peace of mind.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Atlanta, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Georgia. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
