- Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Georgia customers say about Sherpa:
“I called Sherpa and they reactivated the bid and even though it was some weeks later, they gave us the original price that they had quoted us. It was seamless. We made arrangements, paid our deposit and left the car with some friends because all of this was last minute and Sherpa gave us a pickup window of several days. They notified the friends when the driver was coming to pick up the vehicle. They took pictures. It was very well done and they came super fast. I was surprised. It was two and a half days, maybe, to transport from Jonesboro, Georgia, which is a suburb of Atlanta, all the way out here to Gilbert, Arizona, which is a suburb of the Phoenix Metro area.”
“I am sooo thankful I saw a TikTok mentioning this company. I was in the process of shipping my car from California to Georgia and all of the car brokers I experienced were trying to scam me by offering a low upfront cost and then the day before pick up say they had an issue with a driver and I need to pay more. I called Sherpa and they told me that this is a common scam in the transport business and reassured me that while the price they offered me is high, it will remain the price with no surprises.”
“I needed to ship the car I purchased from Georgia to Arizona. Sherpa by far had the best price for enclosed transportation. I was also pleased that it only took two days to get assigned to a shipper. With other companies I`ve used in the past I`ve waited up to 5-days for a shipper to take the job. My only 1 small criticism is probably with the shipper vs Sherpa. I had a slight, very slight hard time getting an update on delivery and where the vehicle is.”

Factors that affect Georgia Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Georgia’s strategic location in the Southeast means shipping distances can vary widely. Longer distances, such as shipping from Atlanta to the West Coast, will naturally cost more than shorter routes within the state or to neighboring areas.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in Georgia. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection, is typically 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times. It’s mainly recommended for high-value or classic cars.
- Location Accessibility: Georgia’s extensive highway network, including I-75, I-85, and I-20, makes many areas easily accessible. However, shipping to or from rural areas off these main routes may incur additional costs compared to urban centers like Atlanta or Savannah.
- Seasonal Factors: Georgia’s climate can impact car shipping prices. Summer months often see higher demand and prices due to more people relocating. Winter weather is generally mild, but occasional ice storms can affect transport schedules and costs.
- Vehicle Specifications: The size, weight, and condition of your vehicle affect shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks common in Georgia may cost more to transport than compact cars. Non-running vehicles also incur additional fees due to special handling requirements.
- Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive rates. Rush or guaranteed pickup services in Georgia will typically cost more but may be necessary for time-sensitive moves.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Georgia. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Georgia car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles in the same area.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is typically the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Georgia. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and lower rates.
- Select strategic locations: Our Sherpa advisors can help you find pickup and dropoff points near major Georgia interstates like I-75, I-85, or I-20. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and lower your overall car shipping price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Be flexible: Offering flexibility in your pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Georgia auto transport. Consider a range of dates rather than a fixed schedule.
- Consider seasonal timing: Georgia’s mild climate means car shipping services operate year-round, but rates may vary seasonally. Our Sherpa advisors can help you find the most cost-effective time to ship your vehicle to or from the Peach State.

How does Georgia Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from Georgia can be smooth sailing with the right preparation. Whether you’re relocating to Atlanta’s bustling metropolis or moving from the serene coastal plains, here’s how to ensure your vehicle arrives safely:
1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you a clear idea of costs based on factors like your vehicle type and the specific Georgia route.
2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car transport. Remember, Georgia’s humid subtropical climate can affect shipping schedules, so flexibility is key.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Before the big day, thoroughly clean and inspect your car. Document any existing damage with photos. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full. This is especially important if you’re shipping to or from Georgia’s mountainous regions, where weight can impact transport.
4. Meet the Carrier: On pickup day, you or an authorized representative will meet the driver. They’ll perform an inspection and collect the keys. If you’re shipping to Georgia during summer, consider early morning pickup to avoid the intense heat.
5. Track Your Shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Georgia’s extensive highway system, including I-75, I-85, and I-20, facilitates efficient auto transport across the state.
6. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly and sign the bill of lading. Pay any remaining balance to complete the car shipping service.

Georgia Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Georgia or moving within the Peach State, there are several important factors to consider. Georgia’s unique climate and regulations can impact your car transport experience and overall relocation process.
First, let’s address vehicle-specific requirements. Georgia doesn’t have a state vehicle inspection program, which simplifies the process for newcomers. However, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. The Georgia Department of Revenue handles vehicle registration, and you can complete most processes online for convenience.
If you’re using Georgia car shipping services, remember to remove your Peach Pass, the state’s electronic toll collection device, to avoid unnecessary charges during transport. For those moving to Georgia and planning to use toll roads, you can easily obtain a Peach Pass online or at various retail locations.
When settling in Georgia, you’ll need to set up utilities. Georgia Power is the primary electricity provider for much of the state, while water services are typically managed by local municipalities. For internet, major providers include AT&T, Xfinity, and Spectrum, offering various options to suit your needs.
Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in local schools. Georgia’s public library system is excellent, and obtaining a library card is a great way to connect with your new community.
If you’re leaving Georgia, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify relevant parties of your move. When shipping a car out of Georgia, consider the state’s humid climate and prepare your vehicle accordingly to ensure it arrives at its destination in top condition.
Whether you’re using car shipping services to move to or from Georgia, familiarize yourself with the state’s major interstates like I-75, I-85, and I-20. These highways are crucial for auto transport and will likely play a role in your vehicle’s journey. By understanding these local nuances, you can ensure a smooth transition and make the most of your Georgia move.
Georgia Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Georgia?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Georgia. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Georgia?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Georgia?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Georgia?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Georgia
When planning car shipping to or from Georgia, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique seasonal factors. Georgia experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters, which can impact your auto transport experience. During summer months (June to August), temperatures can soar, making it essential to prepare your vehicle for the heat. Consider placing a sunshade under your windshield to protect the interior from intense sunlight. Also, remove any heat-sensitive items from your car to prevent melting or damage.
While winters are generally mild in Georgia, occasional ice storms can occur, particularly in northern parts of the state. If you’re shipping a car during winter months (December to February), ensure your pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent issues with icy surfaces. Remember, car transport carriers cannot use snow tire chains, so timing is crucial.
Georgia’s climate also affects peak car shipping times. The state experiences a significant influx of “snowbirds” during winter months, increasing demand for auto transport services. If you’re flexible with your schedule, consider booking your Georgia car shipping outside these peak periods for potentially better rates and availability.
Additionally, Georgia hosts several major universities, including the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. This means car shipping services are in high demand at the beginning and end of academic semesters. If you’re a student or parent looking to ship a car to or from Georgia, plan well in advance or consider scheduling your transport a few weeks before or after the typical moving dates to avoid the rush.
By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car transport experience in the Peach State. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for specific advice tailored to your unique situation and the current conditions in Georgia.
Car Shipping for College Students in Georgia
When planning to ship a car to Georgia for college, it’s crucial to consider parking logistics at universities. Most Georgia campuses require parking permits, which students must purchase and display. For example, the University of Georgia in Athens offers various parking options, including deck and surface lot permits. Georgia Tech in Atlanta has a similar system, with different zones and rates. Always check the specific requirements for your school.
Many off-campus apartments near Georgia universities provide parking, but it’s not guaranteed. If you’re living in dorms, parking availability varies by school. Before arranging car transport, confirm your housing situation and parking options.
For winter breaks, most Georgia universities allow students to leave cars on campus, but designated areas may be required. Unlike northern states, Georgia rarely needs snow tires. However, prepare for occasional ice in winter months.
When using car shipping services to Georgia, verify that your auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage remains valid in your new location. Some policies may need adjustments for out-of-state moves.
Lastly, consider the convenience of Georgia car shipping versus driving. Professional auto transport can save time and reduce wear on your vehicle, especially for long-distance moves. Research reputable car shipping companies to ensure a smooth transition to your Georgia college experience.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Georgia
Georgia is home to several military installations, making it a hub for service members and their families. Fort Benning, located near Columbus, is one of the largest Army bases in the country. On-base parking is available, but it can be limited. Many military members choose to live off-base in nearby neighborhoods, where parking is generally unrestricted. Fort Gordon, near Augusta, offers on-base housing with designated parking areas. For those living off-base, the surrounding communities typically have ample parking options.
When shipping a car to Georgia military bases, it’s important to note that vehicle registration requirements vary. Active duty personnel may be exempt from Georgia registration if their vehicle is registered in their home state. However, it’s best to check with the base’s transportation office for specific guidelines.
Military families will find numerous resources available in Georgia. Both Fort Benning and Fort Gordon have well-stocked commissaries and exchanges. Additionally, the USO of Georgia provides support services and programs for service members and their families throughout the state.
At Sherpa Auto Transport, we’re proud to offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services to and from Georgia. We sincerely thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. Whether you’re relocating to Fort Benning, Fort Gordon, or any other location in Georgia, our team is here to ensure your vehicle arrives safely and on time.
Reviews from our Georgia Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Georgia customers:
“I have a Toyota Yaris, which is a very small, light car that`s not very great for highway driving, and I didn’t wanna drive it long distance from Chicago to Washington, D.C., so I needed a transport service. I did my own personal search of transport companies and I followed up on the leads that my sister sent me. But I went to ConsumerAffairs and I prioritized those brokers. Sherpa is on the second spot on ConsumerAffairs, so I felt pretty good about that. I also looked at the Better Business Bureau. Communication was very easy with Sherpa and I liked how they communicated. They gave me a very good price too. I received lower quotes from other companies, but I didn’t have as much confidence in them. I would rather pay more and feel better than pay less and be nervous. I was already nervous because it was a lot of money and it’s my car, and I didn’t know how things were gonna go. Sherpa said that I would get $50 if I sent in certain documentation which I already did. They told me it would take a couple of weeks for me to receive the rebate check. So I’m still in that waiting period. But even if I don’t receive the rebate check, their quote was comparable to another company that I was seriously considering. Sherpa contracted with the driver for the pickup, but I was hoping to have time to really look into that person. But everything happened so quickly. At that point, I just had to trust what Sherpa was telling me that they very carefully vet their drivers. It was a bit of a leap of faith, but because I’ve looked into Sherpa, I just hoped they did what they said. The pick up was a very easy process. The driver communicated very well with me and he let me know when he was 20 minutes away. He showed up and he was very courteous and nice. I was still in another city during the delivery but my family was here to get the car. They said the driver was similarly communicative. They knew when he was an hour away, so they were ready for him. I’m perfectly happy with Sherpa. It’s an expensive service moving just one car. But on the other hand, my sister and my niece drove the car from Georgia to Chicago for me, and they had an overnight stay somewhere because they didn’t wanna make that drive in one day. By the time they added in the costs for the gas and the overnight stay, the total turned out to be more expensive than the transport service to have somebody drive it back. So, Sherpa was actually less expensive for me than to have family members do it.”
“First off, this is the first time we`ve ever had a vehicle transported and were completely unsure of what to expect. We needed a vehicle transported from Georgia to New Mexico. After spending hours researching several companies and reading many, many reviews, we chose Sherpa Auto Transport and requested a quote. Three days after receiving our quote we were ready to finalize the agreement, but unfortunately for us, the price had increased by $300. We were told the Annual migration of Snowbirds from the southeast to the northeast had begun in earnest and that getting a driver to go from southeast to southwest was going to be difficult unless we sweetened the pot (by increasing our bid by $300). I was less than pleased with this information and immediately called our second choice to see if they were of the same opinion. They didn`t state it as succinctly but did agree in general. As I was hanging up from speaking with the second company, I received a call from Sherpa who implored me to carefully check the details of any other company we might choose to deal with to make sure they didn`t promise us a lower price and then surprise us with the higher price when it was time to actually finalize an agreement. Felicia at Sherpa was very convincing and her concern seemed heartfelt. She convinced me that it was unfortunate timing, but a reality we were nevertheless being forced to deal with. I don`t know if the other company would have been able to save us a few hundred dollars, but I can`t find any fault with the service I received from Sherpa or Ro-Way Express (The carrier assigned to our transport). Communication was excellent. I received timely emails advising me of the status of our shipment (Waiting to be assigned a carrier, assigned a carrier, on its way, due to arrive). They put me in direct contact with Ro-Way so we could address any concerns and/or specific requests. We couldn`t have been happier with the service we received from Sherpa or Ro-Way Express. Excellent communication with both companies. Gabriela was my primary contact for Ro-Way and was excellent at keeping me apprised of the status of our vehicle. Emil (transporter) was a joy to deal with and took very good care of our vehicle, which arrived in pristine condition, sooner than expected. I couldn`t give them any higher praise. Thank you Sherpa and Ro-Way for taking an unknown, stressful endeavor and exceeding our expectations. I would absolutely use either of these businesses again.”
“I live in Georgia and bought a car at a New York State. I had hired a transport company to start with and they weren`t getting anything done after about nine days. So, I was doing some research online and got some good feedback about Sherpa. They were mostly Americans. Most of the people I was dealing with that other company were not and they could barely understand them talking on the phone. I called the representative with Sherpa and they were easy to talk to and deal with. They understood my dilemma and they had me a driver in three days. The price was what they told me. I paid $450 more than I’d do with the previous company that I hired and fired but it was worth it. From what I understood, that was about what it was gonna cost anyway to get the car delivered. I did some research and was asking questions on a trucker transport forum. They were all saying that the price that I was given wouldn`t get anybody to bring the car to me. They said if I`d pay for the transport in the 1,400 to 1,500 bucks, I`d get it. And that was what I did. I ended up paying 1,500. But the driver that Sherpa had hired was professional, excellent, very helpful and very polite. He was top-notch. I would use that guy again. Even after he got the car off the trailer, he was helping me with the car. The reps from Sherpa were fantastic. I talked to two different guys and they were top-notch. They were very courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. They said that even if they needed to up the amount of money paid to the driver, they would lower their cost to the company in order to get the car to me. I`m very pleased with them. The condition of the vehicles is what it was when it left. There was no damage. Overall, the experience was great and I was very pleased with their service from Sherpa.”
“I bought a car out of state and I looked at over 25 different companies to transport it. I went with Sherpa because of the rebate they had and they weren`t harassing me. Other companies were blowing up my email box. Still, was able to get someone right away at Sherpa and she gave me a quick rate. Thereafter Sherpa was able to do the pickup really quick. They didn`t delay and weren`t trying to load up a whole bunch of cars. I had them transport a Dodge Challenger from Fort Lauderdale to Georgia to Atlanta. The driver brought the vehicle to my location and unloaded it. Initially, he was going to pick it up, but he noticed something wasn`t right on the vehicle. He called me and let me know that he could still bring it or he could not bring it. He turned around and picked it up for me. He let me know before he brought it up here and I was surprised. He also gave me the bill of lading with all the information on it. Everything was easy and paperless via email and it was a smooth transaction. The driver also let me check out the car. He showed me little marks that he had seen and noticed before transporting that he told me and took pictures of. He took pictures as he was loading and before he loaded, and sent them to me. He took every angle and took pictures of it on his truck, and it was good. Also, the quote given by Sherpa was reasonable. It wasn`t too low like I wanted it, but it was also not too high either, which made me feel like it was safe. In the end, it was a 100% accurate.”
“Sherpa Auto was the third company to book my vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Camry, for shipping from Georgia to California. The first company and second company failed to do their jobs, I was calling them more than they were calling me, and I almost gave up shipping my car and was going to resort to putting it in storage until I finished with school. Being that I was on military orders and I had to report to school by a certain time. The first company set a date for pickup and they never followed through. That date came and went. The second Company told me what I wanted to hear and took advantage of the situation by their knowledge of knowing what happened with my first experience. But I called Sherpa on Thursday and they got my vehicle booked and shipped by Saturday morning. 2 days!!! Not to mention my car was delivered within 4 days… ACROSS THE COUNTRY! Their customer service is awesome and they understand the importance of moving from one place to the next and owning two vehicles that can’t be driven at the same time. If you are booked with any other company besides Sherpa, cancel the order and call them now. Yes, the shipping price is a little costly than other companies, but if you want guaranteed service without the headaches, pay the extra money. Thank you Sherpa Auto for your awesome service. Your efforts and reliability are greatly appreciated.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Georgia, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Georgia. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
