Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Tallahassee customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I was moving to Tallahassee and I have two vehicles, so I could only tow one behind U-Haul. I used Sherpa to transport the other one and they had a price-lock promise which was very beneficial. It was a little bit more than I was hoping to pay, but at the end of the day, it was what I needed. And it was within $100 of the best price I could have gotten without all the hassle of spending hours trying to get that price.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I needed to transport a vehicle from New Jersey to Texas. I got quotes from around five companies but I liked the customer service from Sherpa’s reps, so I went with them. They were personable, informative, and if I had any questions or problems, they sought to clarify and get the time to answer them. And of course, their price was reasonable.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The rep Dylan was good. When we heard about the quote, it was a reasonable price, and I liked that it didn’t change at all until the final. I value that. The transport from Tallahassee, Florida to Portland, Oregon took eight days, and it was exactly what I wanted for the date. Delivery was good too. The driver came to our apartment, right behind the complex, and the car was clean.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Tallahassee, FL. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but the cost per mile typically decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Tallahassee. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Route Popularity: Tallahassee’s location along I-10 can affect shipping costs. More frequent routes, like those between major cities, often have lower prices due to higher demand and competition.
  • Seasonal Factors: Tallahassee’s mild winters and hot, humid summers can influence car shipping prices. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter might offer more competitive rates.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas in Tallahassee are generally cheaper for car transport than rural locations. Consider meeting the carrier at a more accessible location to potentially reduce costs.
  • Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to more competitive pricing for your Tallahassee car shipment. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will increase the cost.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship to Tallahassee than inoperable ones, which require special equipment for loading and unloading.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Tallahassee, FL. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Tallahassee car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates.
  • Optimize pickup/dropoff locations: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-10 or US-319. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about personal property during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better car shipping options and potentially lower costs.
  • Consider seasonal factors: Tallahassee’s mild climate means year-round auto transport is possible, but rates may vary during peak moving seasons or university move-in periods.
  • Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re shipping multiple vehicles to or from Tallahassee, ask about potential discounts for transporting more than one car.

How does Tallahassee Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process in Tallahassee, FL, requires careful planning and consideration of local factors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you ship your car to or from Florida’s capital city:

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free instant quote from Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you an accurate estimate of your car shipping costs, considering factors like vehicle type, distance, and preferred shipping method.

2. Choose Your Shipping Method: Decide between open or enclosed transport. For Tallahassee’s hot, humid climate, enclosed transport offers extra protection from sun exposure and sudden rainstorms.

3. Schedule Your Shipment: Book your auto transport with Sherpa, locking in your price with our Price Lock Promise. Consider Tallahassee’s weather patterns when scheduling, avoiding hurricane season if possible.

4. Prepare Your Vehicle: Follow our comprehensive guide to prepare your car for shipping. In Tallahassee’s humid climate, consider using a dehumidifier in your vehicle before transport to prevent mold growth.

5. Plan for Pickup and Delivery: Sherpa offers door-to-door service, but be aware of any local restrictions. Tallahassee’s narrow streets in historic districts may require alternative pickup/drop-off locations.

6. Stay Informed During Transit: Track your vehicle’s progress as it travels along major routes like I-10 or US-27. Sherpa provides regular updates throughout the journey.

7. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon arrival, inspect your car thoroughly and complete the final paperwork. If shipping to Tallahassee during pollen season (spring), expect some dust accumulation.

By following these steps and working with a trusted car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport, you can ensure a smooth auto transport experience to or from Tallahassee, FL. Remember to consider local factors such as weather, road conditions, and city layout when planning your car shipment.

Tallahassee, Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Tallahassee?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Tallahassee. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Tallahassee?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Tallahassee?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Tallahassee?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Tallahassee

When planning car shipping to or from Tallahassee, FL, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique seasonal factors. Tallahassee experiences a humid subtropical climate, which can impact your auto transport experience throughout the year.

In summer (June to September), Tallahassee sees high temperatures and frequent thunderstorms. If you’re shipping a car during this period:

  • Use a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior from heat damage
  • Remove heat-sensitive items from your car to prevent melting
  • Be prepared for potential weather-related delays in your car transport schedule

Winter (December to February) in Tallahassee is mild, but occasional cold snaps can occur. When using car shipping services in winter:

  • Ensure your vehicle is winterized, but avoid using snow tire chains
  • Choose a pickup/drop-off location on level ground to avoid issues with icy surfaces
  • Remove any liquids that might freeze and expand during transport

Beyond weather considerations, Tallahassee car shipping can be affected by local events and patterns:

  • College moves: As home to Florida State University, Tallahassee sees increased demand for auto transport services at the beginning and end of academic semesters. Plan your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak times to avoid higher rates and limited availability.
  • Legislative session: The annual 60-day legislative session (typically March to May) can increase traffic and potentially impact car transport schedules. Book your auto transport early if shipping during this period.
  • Football season: Home games for the FSU Seminoles (September to November) can cause traffic congestion. Consider this when scheduling your car shipping pickup or delivery.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car shipping experience to or from Tallahassee, FL. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on seasonal considerations and local events that may affect your auto transport plans.

Florida State University (FSU) requires students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits, which can be done online. On-campus parking is limited, so plan accordingly. Florida A&M University (FAMU) also requires parking permits, with different zones for residents and commuters. For both universities, most off-campus apartments offer parking, but always confirm before signing a lease. During winter breaks, FSU and FAMU provide designated long-term parking areas for students leaving their cars behind. While Tallahassee rarely sees snow, it’s wise to prepare for occasional freezing temperatures. Before shipping your car to Tallahassee, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. Lastly, consider using a reliable car transport service to safely move your vehicle to campus, especially if you’re coming from out of state.

Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount and understands the unique needs of service members. We thank all military personnel and their families for their service. “I’ve had horrible experiences making calls a 2 yrs ago, planning a move and needing my car shipped. I was getting hammered for a couple weeks by annoying calls, texts, and emails from many transport companies that didn’t seem legit. Fast forward, my moving plans fell through, and this time around, I took my time researching for reliable transport companies. I stumbled upon Sherpa reviews here, which made me more comfortable and confident to call, needing my car shipped from San Diego to Florida. Customer service was excellent with my first call, explained how transport works, they aren’t like the companies that have hundreds of random people calling, texting, and emailing, asked for a window date I needed my car picked up, and got a quote done. I felt great after the call. Communication was top notch from customer service to the driver.”

“Sherpa’s price lock promise was a good lock in. That was a plus on their side. They were the only ones that I saw that offered it, which might have helped me in that decision besides flipping a few coins. I spoke with the guy who set it all up for me and he sounded nice, professional and sincere, and that was also helpful. I was kept informed of where the car was and when it was expected. I paid Sherpa a $200 down payment to set the date and there was another balance of 13.50. They wanted cash on the barrelhead when I pulled in but my daughter didn’t have the cash. I could put the money in her account and she’d have to take the money out of her account to get the cash. But since I’m paying for it, it was easier that it goes directly to where I want it to go. I sent $50 while the car was en route and Eric, the driver, said it went through. I told them that I’ll do the balance when they get there, after my daughter has checked out the car. And I did. It worked fast. But at first, they were a little hesitant about that and the other people weren’t even giving me much of a choice on that either. Sherpa worked with me with the payment, the pickup and the drop-off. They were always there when I called. It was excellent. I will use them again when I need to get my car back to Florida.”

“Just used them to transport my mom’s old 1993 Del Sol from Inverness, FL to Pittsburgh, PA. Created the request on Sat 7 Oct. Same day I received confirmation of the booking and price (lower than the other companies I contacted). Received an email on Sun 8 Oct that they were still searching for a driver. On Mon 9 Oct, I received an email indicating a driver was located. At 3 PM I received a call informing me the driver would like to pick up at 6 PM the same day. Wow that was quick. Driver arrived at 6:40 pm on Mon 9 Oct – first working day after my initial contact. The driver did call me directly to confirm the person she was to obtain the car from – my sister. Since the truck was so large and my Pittsburgh location is down narrow streets, I decided to change the delivery location to a barely used strip mall directly off the interstate. On Tue at 9:10 AM I texted the new location to my Sherpa contact. My Sherpa contact agreed and indicated the car should be delivered the same day. The driver did call me, 30 minutes before she expected to arrive at the strip mall parking lot. Wow by 6:30 PM on Tue 10 Oct the car was delivered in perfect condition. Seriously it could not have been easier or better service delivered. I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport!!!!”

“From the moment I contacted Sherpa Auto Transport, everything was smooth and efficient. I placed a call on Friday, had a call back by Saturday morning and transport arranged by Monday. They picked the car up in FL on Wednesday morning and we had it in San Antonio, TX on Thursday night. The driver was very responsive and courteous and his truck was immaculate. I was also extremely impressed with his driving ability. We have a sloped driveway and he maneuvered the trailer deftly right up to the garage door with literally a half inch of clearance to spare. The car arrived in the exact condition it was when it left. I have never transported a car before and to say it was a little bit daunting is an understatement. After getting the run around from another carrier, Sherpa really stepped in and made things easy. They were patient, explained the process thoroughly and answered all my questions without making me feel stupid for asking. I transported a car that was my father’s (a 1964 Porsche 356) that is very special to our family and I would trust Sherpa with it again.”

“I had a positive experience with Sherpa. If you are using a transport company please go into it knowing that it is a very aggressive industry. To get a quote you are required to provide your phone number and the various brokers, including Sherpa, will call and/or repeatedly until you tell them you’ve gone with someone else. Please also understand that these are brokers and not truckers. They are not the ones who will physically be transporting your vehicle. All brokers require some sort of deposit up front which you can use a credit card for but the balance due is required in cash or money order or sometimes Zelle due to the trucking company upon delivery. That’s standard. If you pay all by cc you will pay more and all upfront. Sherpa called me on a Sunday. I told the rep I went with someone else. His response was, “Ok. If anything falls through or you need us in the future, please reach out.” He seemed sincere. Well my first broker DID fall through, and based solely on the Sherpa rep’s response I called them back to use them. They weren’t the least expensive but sometimes you get what you pay for. I paid the deposit on a Monday afternoon and my trucker picked up on Wednesday and the car delivered from NC to FL on Thursday. I worked with Ivy and she was very knowledgeable and not pushy. She answered all my questions and explained the complete process without coming across as a sales person. The transport was smooth and without issue. One recommendation for Sherpa is to send a “thank you” and “how did we do” follow up email after the transport is complete. One broker sent auto-generated emails with general information about the transport business and things to look out for. Sherpa should do that too. It’s good info to have. I would use Sherpa again if I needed transport.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Tallahassee, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
