Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The rep Dylan was good. When we heard about the quote, it was a reasonable price, and I liked that it didn’t change at all until the final. I value that. The transport from Tallahassee, Florida to Portland, Oregon took eight days, and it was exactly what I wanted for the date. Delivery was good too.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was affordable to me. When they told me they were coming, they came and got my car, and then it got here to Tallahassee in good shape.”

Factors that affect Tallahassee Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Tallahassee, FL. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in Tallahassee. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier and potentially slower, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Florida’s occasional severe weather.
  • Location Accessibility: Tallahassee’s position near I-10 and US-27 makes it relatively accessible for auto transport. However, pickups or deliveries to more remote areas of Leon County may incur additional costs.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks popular in Florida, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Tallahassee’s car shipping rates may fluctuate with the influx of college students in August and January. Summer months also tend to see higher prices due to increased demand.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost of car shipping services in Tallahassee.
  • Flexibility: Being flexible with pickup and delivery dates can lead to more competitive rates when shipping a car to or from Tallahassee, FL.

To get a better understanding of these factors and how they might affect your Tallahassee car shipping costs, check out our detailed car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your car shipment at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from Tallahassee, FL.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa advisers to find pickup/dropoff points near major interstates like I-10 or US-27. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. The more flexible you are, the better options you’ll have for car shipping services in Tallahassee, FL.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport rates may vary based on the time of year. If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer for potential savings on your car transport.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Ensure your car is in good working condition before shipping. This can prevent delays and additional costs during the auto transport process.

When shipping a car to Tallahassee, keep in mind the city’s hot, humid climate. If you’re shipping during summer, consider enclosed transport to protect your vehicle from intense sun and sudden thunderstorms. For winter shipments, the mild weather makes open transport a cost-effective option.

Tallahassee’s location at the intersection of I-10 and US-27 makes it easily accessible for auto transport carriers. However, be prepared for potential delays during Florida State University’s move-in periods or major events at the Capitol Complex, as these can impact local traffic.

By following these steps and considering Tallahassee’s unique characteristics, you’ll ensure a smooth car shipping experience to or from Florida’s capital city.

Tallahassee Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Internet Setup Car Moving
Utility Setup Car Moving
Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from Tallahassee, FL, it’s essential to be aware of local regulations and prepare for your move. Florida doesn’t require a front license plate, so you’ll only need to display one on the rear of your vehicle. If you’re moving to Tallahassee, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. The process is straightforward and can be completed at the Leon County Tax Collector’s office.

Tallahassee doesn’t have a specific toll system, but if you’re traveling through other parts of Florida, you might encounter SunPass or E-PASS toll roads. Consider removing these transponders before car shipping to avoid unnecessary charges. When settling in Tallahassee, be aware that the city experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters. This climate can affect your vehicle, so regular maintenance is crucial.

For utilities, City of Tallahassee Utilities provides electricity, water, and natural gas. Popular internet providers include Comcast and CenturyLink. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if applicable, enroll your children in the Leon County School District.

If you’re moving away from Tallahassee, remember to:

  • Forward your mail with USPS
  • Cancel local memberships (gyms, clubs)
  • Return library books and cancel your card
  • Notify your employer and update your address with banks and credit card companies

When choosing a car shipping company for your Tallahassee move, consider factors like weather and traffic. Tallahassee’s location near I-10 and US-27 makes it accessible for auto transport services. However, during hurricane season (June to November), be prepared for potential delays in car shipping services. Always work with a reputable car transport company that understands local conditions and can provide a smooth experience whether you’re shipping a car to or from the Florida capital.

Tallahassee, Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Tallahassee?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Tallahassee. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Tallahassee?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Tallahassee?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Tallahassee?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Tallahassee

When planning car shipping to or from Tallahassee, FL, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique seasonal factors. Tallahassee experiences a humid subtropical climate, which can impact your auto transport experience throughout the year.

In summer, Tallahassee’s heat and humidity can be intense. If you’re shipping a car during this season:

  • Use a sunshade to protect your car’s interior from excessive heat
  • Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp
  • Consider scheduling your car transport for early morning or evening to avoid peak temperatures

Winter in Tallahassee is generally mild, but occasional cold snaps can occur. When using car shipping services in winter:

  • Ensure your vehicle is winterized if shipping to colder destinations
  • Remove any items that might freeze and potentially damage your car
  • Be aware that icy conditions, though rare, can delay pickup or delivery

Spring and fall are ideal seasons for auto transport in Tallahassee, with pleasant temperatures and lower humidity. However, these seasons coincide with peak times for car shipping companies:

  • August and September see increased demand due to college students returning to Florida State University and Florida A&M University
  • Snowbirds typically begin arriving in October, increasing car transport requests
  • Book your Tallahassee car shipping well in advance during these busy periods

By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smooth and efficient experience when shipping a car to or from Tallahassee, FL. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on seasonal considerations and scheduling.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Tallahassee, Florida

When considering car shipping to Tallahassee for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at local universities. Florida State University (FSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU) both require parking permits for on-campus parking. Students should register their vehicles and purchase passes online before arrival. Most off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s wise to confirm this beforehand. For winter breaks, FSU and FAMU provide long-term parking options, but spaces are limited. Remember to check your auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage to ensure they’re valid in Tallahassee. While snow isn’t a concern, be prepared for heavy rain during hurricane season. If you’re unsure about navigating these logistics, consider using a car transport service to ship your car to Tallahassee. This can simplify the process and give you peace of mind as you start your college journey in the Sunshine State.

Reviews from our Florida Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Florida customers:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I needed to transport a vehicle from New Jersey to Texas. I got quotes from around five companies but I liked the customer service from Sherpa`s reps, so I went with them. They were personable, informative, and if I had any questions or problems, they sought to clarify and get the time to answer them. And of course, their price was reasonable. The quote they gave me was also accurate to the final cost I ended up paying. They got the car delivered in four days and during that time, I was able to talk to the driver. He was different from the one who picked up the car though. So somehow they switched drivers, but I was able to find out how things were going along the way.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had a Subaru Crosstrek shipped 3,000 miles through Sherpa. Their reps were very helpful and if I had a question, I could call them and they would answer me. The quote Sherpa gave was on the higher end but I like their reputation so I still went with them. They also gave me a $100 discount `cause I`m a disabled veteran which put their quote between the highest and the lowest amongst shipping companies. It took them like four and a half days to get here and the vehicle was in perfect condition. I would use Sherpa`s service again.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“At two different times, I spoke to two people who were both very helpful and knowledgeable. Price-wise, Sherpa Auto Transport was the same as everyone. They were all within the same ballpark of each other. But I felt they were more comfortable after speaking to them. Also, I could see why they had the reviews because they were exactly like it was when talking to them. And everything was smooth. They offered a free car wash. Everything was wonderful. I submitted the thing through online, and they sent an email back with the quote. It was a day later, they called to go over a couple of things. I`m in South Florida and the car would go to Boston, and the tires in Florida were not the type of tires I need for winter up north. So, that would cause a delay because we had to wait for the tires to come in. She said, “No problem. I`ll make a note in the system so we can still hold on to the quote we gave you and you don`t lose the price. And as soon as you know when the tires will be in and when you can do this, just let us know.””

“I read the Better Business Bureau reports and Sherpa was at the top. I’m a senior, so I looked at a few senior sites and Sherpa was recommended by one of the sites that I looked at. I called them and they were pretty straightforward. They weren’t the lowest price but they had a promised guarantee stating that it would only be a certain price and they guaranteed $300 over. I have a Kia and I was having it transported from Southern Arizona to Sebring, Florida. What Sherpa does is they put the bid out and different transport companies then bid on that. I had a gentleman from Miami who was making the trip back and forth and he called me. I was under the impression I would get a 24 to 48-hour notice. He was very professional when he showed up and he delivered my car safely. But he only gave me half hour notice on my end before he wanted to get the car. The car was picked up on a Tuesday morning and it was delivered on Friday. I was still in Arizona. My daughter-in-law and son were having the car delivered. The gentleman texted me Thursday night and said, “Let them know that I’ll be there first thing in the morning.†It was already midnight in Florida so they didn’t get the message. In the end, it all worked out fine despite the transport guy not quite meeting the expectations that Sherpa said I would get from a carrier. The car was delivered exactly as they said it would be. It made it fine. I was promised upfront by Sherpa a free car wash but my car was clean, so I didn’t use the car wash. I was very happy.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I needed to send a car from California to my daughter in New York. I looked at about 3 companies and went with Sherpa because the reviews were good. I liked the price-lock guarantee and that’s the main reason I went with them. The driver was supposed to pick up the car at my apartment in San Francisco. He said he couldn’t come to San Francisco because of the size of his truck so I had to go meet him at a truck stop outside San Francisco. I got there about 15 minutes before he got there. There was somebody else waiting for him, and they needed to have their car moved, too. So, he attended to them, and after that he attended to me. He was a nice guy. The car got to New York earlier. They couldn’t go to Staten Island and said they would meet my daughter at Newark. My daughter went there at the time the driver said he was gonna be there but he did not show up. She ended up waiting at the mall for almost 4 hours and missed class before the driver finally showed up. Their cost was expensive, but Sherpa did it. I may have gotten it cheaper somewhere else. As a matter of fact, I had moved a car from Denver to Indiana. I used a company somewhere in Florida, and I was very happy with that. I had wanted to use them this time and I called them. They gave me a cheaper quote than Sherpa. They had the vehicle for two weeks, but they couldn’t find a driver. In the car-moving business, most of them will give you a quote and tell you that first of all, the time and the price are not guaranteed. It’s all within a framework. If they had told me, “Hey, he’s not gonna come to your apartment in San Francisco,†I would understand that. If they had told me that, “Hey, he’s not gonna to Staten Island,†I would understand that too. But the rep at Sherpa answered all my questions. He sent me a quote which I reviewed and liked. It took me some time to get back to him, but the book was guaranteed. The carrier ended up charging more and Sherpa did not charge me anymore. I did not pay anything upfront and Sherpa just dealt with the carrier directly. That was very honorable of them. On top of that, they gave me a rebate because I’m a civil servant and my daughter is a student. I got $100 Visa gift card sent to me after the fact. I would use Sherpa again. They were all good. They were better than anybody else that I had talked to. In fact, I was gonna use them again for another car but we ended up not moving the car.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Tallahassee, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

When choosing an auto transport company for your Tallahassee car shipping needs, prioritize reputation and experience. Look for providers with a proven track record of successful car transports and positive customer reviews. Ensure the company offers adequate insurance coverage and is registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Compare pricing and services, but remember that the lowest quote isn’t always the best option. Quality customer service is crucial, especially when shipping to or from the capital city of Florida. Be wary of companies that require large upfront deposits or lack transparency in their pricing. By considering these factors, you’ll find a reliable car shipping service that can safely transport your vehicle to or from Tallahassee.
