Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Miami customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Top Line Auto Service based out of California dropped the car off. The two brothers met me. I had spoken to Joseph on the phone, and figured out what direction they were coming from, which was east from Florida. And based on where I live, I gave them the best place that I thought would be the easiest to pull up an 18-wheeler, and with a truckload of cars, to offload it and meet them to where they could easily get back on the interstate again and go about their day without having to snake through city traffic.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“They picked up my car near Philadelphia and delivered it to me in Miami approximately four days after they picked it up. The driver was not able to bring his truck directly to my house because the area has a lot of trees and the truck might not have been able to clear those trees, so we work something out where I met the driver at his truck and he followed me back to my house in the car that was transported and then I drove him back to his truck.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Your services were excellent. The communications were constant, accurate and professional, so I was completely aware of what was happening at all times. If there was a minor problem, I felt that Sherpa was on top of it, and took responsibility for everything under their control. When the driver was found, I got numerous emails, texts and phone calls to alert me. When his language was a bit hard to understand, Sherpa got in the middle of it to help with communication.”

Factors that affect Miami Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Miami, FL. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but Miami’s strategic location as a major transportation hub can sometimes offset this factor.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in Miami. While enclosed transport offers extra protection from Florida’s intense sun and occasional tropical storms, it’s typically 50% more expensive and may have longer wait times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship to or from Miami due to the space they occupy and their weight. Compact cars are generally more affordable to transport.
  • Season: Miami’s car shipping rates can fluctuate with the seasons. Winter months often see higher prices as snowbirds flock to Florida, while summer can be more affordable for auto transport.
  • Route Popularity: Miami’s extensive highway network, including I-95 and I-75, makes it a popular auto transport destination. High-traffic routes can sometimes offer more competitive pricing due to increased carrier availability.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Terminal-to-terminal service in Miami can be cheaper than door-to-door delivery, especially given the city’s sprawling layout and traffic congestion.
  • Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to more economical car shipping options in Miami. Rush or guaranteed delivery services typically come at a premium.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from Miami. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Miami car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-95 or I-75. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before transport. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective car shipping options to or from Miami.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Miami’s auto transport market can fluctuate with seasonal demand. Shipping during off-peak times may result in lower rates for your car transport needs.

Remember, Miami’s unique climate and bustling urban environment can impact car shipping. The city’s proximity to ports makes it a hub for auto transport, but it also means traffic can be heavy. Miami Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from Miami, FL, it’s essential to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. Miami car shipping can be a breeze with the right preparation. First, consider removing your SunPass transponder to avoid accidental toll charges during auto transport. Florida’s vehicle registration process is straightforward, but you’ll need to complete it within 30 days of establishing residency. Miami doesn’t require city-specific parking passes, but be mindful of street cleaning schedules and residential parking zones.

For those moving to Miami, setting up utilities is a crucial step. Florida Power & Light (FPL) provides electricity, while the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department handles water services. Popular internet providers include AT&T, Xfinity, and Atlantic Broadband. Don’t forget to register to vote and get your Miami-Dade Public Library card for access to a wealth of resources.

If you’re leaving Miami, remember to cancel local memberships and forward your mail. When using car shipping services, consider Miami’s climate. The city’s hot, humid weather and proximity to the ocean can affect vehicles, so opt for enclosed car transport if possible.

Miami’s extensive highway system, including I-95, I-75, and the Florida Turnpike, makes it easy for car shipping companies to access the city. However, be aware of potential traffic congestion, especially during rush hours and tourist seasons. When you ship a car to Miami, inform your auto transport provider about any specific delivery instructions, considering the city’s diverse neighborhoods and occasional flooding in low-lying areas.

By keeping these factors in mind, your experience with Miami car shipping and relocation will be smooth and hassle-free. Whether you’re moving to enjoy the vibrant culture and beautiful beaches or leaving for new adventures, proper preparation ensures a successful transition.

Miami, Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Miami?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Miami. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Miami?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Miami?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Miami?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Miami

When planning car shipping to or from Miami, FL, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique climate and seasonal factors. Miami’s subtropical weather can significantly impact your auto transport experience. Here are some essential tips to ensure a smooth car shipping process:

1. Hurricane Season: From June to November, Miami is prone to hurricanes. If you’re scheduling car shipping services during this period, be prepared for potential delays. It’s advisable to ship your car outside this season if possible.

2. Heat Protection: Miami’s scorching summers can affect your vehicle during transport. Consider using a car cover or sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior and paint. When storing items in your car, avoid leaving heat-sensitive objects that might melt or warp.

3. Snowbird Season: From October to April, Miami experiences an influx of seasonal residents. This peak period for car transport can lead to higher prices and longer wait times. Plan your Miami car shipping well in advance during these months.

4. Rainy Season: Miami’s rainy season (May to October) can cause occasional flooding. Ensure your chosen pickup and drop-off locations are on higher ground to avoid any water-related issues during car shipping.

5. Tourist Season: Miami’s high tourist season (December to April) can impact auto transport logistics. Roads may be busier, affecting delivery times. Consider shipping a car slightly before or after peak tourist months for potentially better rates and faster service.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can optimize your car shipping experience to or from Miami, FL. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on seasonal considerations and to ensure a seamless auto transport process.

Both universities provide options for long-term parking during breaks, ideal if you’re using auto transport services to return home. While snow tires aren’t necessary in Miami’s tropical climate, students should prepare for occasional flooding during hurricane season. Before shipping your car to Miami, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to Florida. Lastly, consider the convenience of car transport companies for hassle-free vehicle relocation to and from campus throughout your college years.

“My experience with Sherpa was terrific. They did everything they said they were gonna do. The man I spoke to was very polite. He told me they had a list of people that they don`t do business with it. The delivery on my end was perfect. The man`s name was Alex and he was good and he walked around my car. He examined my car very thoroughly and took a video. He put the car on the truck and he delivered it a day earlier than I thought it was gonna be delivered to my brother and my brother was happy. All it needed was to be washed. Other than being washed, it was in good condition. I definitely would use Sherpa again. If I send up the car that I have right now back to my sister, I will definitely use Sherpa. They were good, polite and they backed up what they said.”

“I started getting literally dozens of calls/emails/emails after I put out a need for a shipper…I guess it`s a cut throat business!! Anyways, I was getting prices from $1300 to $2300 from San Francisco to Miami and it was pretty confusing so I decided to read the reviews and went with Sherpa since it was 5 star rated and had good reviews. Price was $1650, no fees upfront other than $50 AFTER the shipper was confirmed. Car took a few days longer to arrive but no big deal…They held the price, no surprises and no changes. Car was dirty as hell from cross country on open truck but that was expected…No damages. I would hire them again.”

“I needed my car shipped from Miami to Los Angeles. I worked with Sherpa who were very professional and guided me through the entire process. Sherpa connected me to Skyline Auto Relocation with a pick up date between Dec 7-11. They picked up my car on Dec 8th (right on time) and gave me a delivery window of Dec 14-17. It arrive on Dec 15th (right on time again!) in perfect condition. I have never been more pleased with a car shipment than I was with Sherpa. And the price was affordable and never changed from the original quote. I would recommend Sherpa to anyone who wants their car shipped in the US.”

“Just used them to transport my mom`s old 1993 Del Sol from Inverness, FL to Pittsburgh, PA. Created the request on Sat 7 Oct. Same day I received confirmation of the booking and price (lower than the other companies I contacted). Received an email on Sun 8 Oct that they were still searching for a driver. On Mon 9 Oct, I received an email indicating a driver was located. At 3 PM I received a call informing me the driver would like to pick up at 6 PM the same day. Wow that was quick. Driver arrived at 6:40 pm on Mon 9 Oct – first working day after my initial contact. The driver did call me directly to confirm the person she was to obtain the car from – my sister. Since the truck was so large and my Pittsburgh location is down narrow streets, I decided to change the delivery location to a barely used strip mall directly off the interstate. On Tue at 9:10 AM I texted the new location to my Sherpa contact. My Sherpa contact agreed and indicated the car should be delivered the same day. The driver did call me, 30 minutes before she expected to arrive at the strip mall parking lot. Wow by 6:30 PM on Tue 10 Oct the car was delivered in perfect condition. Seriously it could not have been easier or better service delivered. I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport!!!!”

“From the moment I contacted Sherpa Auto Transport, everything was smooth and efficient. I placed a call on Friday, had a call back by Saturday morning and transport arranged by Monday. They picked the car up in FL on Wednesday morning and we had it in San Antonio, TX on Thursday night. The driver was very responsive and courteous and his truck was immaculate. I was also extremely impressed with his driving ability. We have a sloped driveway and he maneuvered the trailer deftly right up to the garage door with literally a half inch of clearance to spare. The car arrived in the exact condition it was when it left. I have never transported a car before and to say it was a little bit daunting is an understatement. After getting the run around from another carrier, Sherpa really stepped in and made things easy. They were patient, explained the process thoroughly and answered all my questions without making me feel stupid for asking. I transported a car that was my father’s (a 1964 Porsche 356) that is very special to our family and I would trust Sherpa with it again.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Miami, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
