Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Factors that affect Lutz Car Shipping Prices

Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Lutz, FL significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Lutz. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Florida’s occasional severe weather.
  • Location Accessibility: Lutz’s proximity to major routes like I-75 and I-275 can help keep costs down. However, if you’re shipping to or from more remote areas away from these highways, prices may increase.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Florida’s peak tourist season, typically from December to April, can affect car shipping prices to and from Lutz. Summer months may also see increased rates due to higher demand.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. If your car doesn’t run, expect to pay more for specialized equipment needed to load and unload it.
  • Flexibility: Being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates can often result in better rates for car shipping to or from Lutz, FL.

Understanding these factors can help you navigate the car shipping process more effectively. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re unsure whether to choose open or enclosed transport for your Lutz auto shipping needs, learn more about the differences in our open vs. enclosed car shipping guide.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Lutz car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the area.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major highways like I-75 or I-275. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Remove personal items: Empty your vehicle before transport. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about personal belongings during the journey.
  • Be flexible with dates: The more adaptable you are with pickup and delivery timeframes, the better options you’ll have for cost-effective auto transport to or from Lutz, FL.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays when demand for car shipping services is high. Off-peak times may offer more competitive rates for your Lutz auto transport needs.

Lutz, Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Lutz?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Lutz. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Lutz?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Lutz?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Lutz?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“At two different times, I spoke to two people who were both very helpful and knowledgeable. Price-wise, Sherpa Auto Transport was the same as everyone. They were all within the same ballpark of each other. But I felt they were more comfortable after speaking to them. Also, I could see why they had the reviews because they were exactly like it was when talking to them. And everything was smooth. They offered a free car wash. Everything was wonderful. I submitted the thing through online, and they sent an email back with the quote. It was a day later, they called to go over a couple of things. I`m in South Florida and the car would go to Boston, and the tires in Florida were not the type of tires I need for winter up north. So, that would cause a delay because we had to wait for the tires to come in. She said, “No problem. I`ll make a note in the system so we can still hold on to the quote we gave you and you don`t lose the price. And as soon as you know when the tires will be in and when you can do this, just let us know.” Once I knew when the tires would be done, I called them back. She guided me on what window to take for pick-up, so it would be there when my daughter got there. She helped me with figuring what would be the best dates for everything. And while I was on the phone with her, she sent me an email which I had to click on and pay the deposit, and she stayed on the phone with me while the whole thing went through to make sure they got it. There were no glitches in their system or on my end. Within a day, she sent me the name of the company that would take the car, gave me all their contact information if I needed anything from them. The pick-up went very well. It was not the driver`s fault that it was pouring rain. I felt bad. Those things happen. In that type of business, it`s not like an airplane where people know what time they would arrive and depart. The driver would get stuck based on whoever is in front of him. He thought he would be there between 10:00 and 11:00 in the morning, and it wound up being more 2 o`clock in the afternoon. I knew he couldn`t get into my neighborhood. So, the company gave me the driver`s direct phone number so I could pre-arrange a pick-up where he could get the truck and be able to get the car. So, between the weather and the rain, it delayed him. The pick-up wound being later than expected. The drop-off, again, was not his fault, the car that was dropped off before us gave the wrong address and did not answer their phone. It was my brother-in-law that handled that and they agreed it would be too dark by the time the driver would be able to bring the car. So, they said they would do it first thing in the morning and they were there at 7:30 with the car.”

“I read the Better Business Bureau reports and Sherpa was at the top. I’m a senior, so I looked at a few senior sites and Sherpa was recommended by one of the sites that I looked at. I called them and they were pretty straightforward. They weren’t the lowest price but they had a promised guarantee stating that it would only be a certain price and they guaranteed $300 over. I have a Kia and I was having it transported from Southern Arizona to Sebring, Florida. What Sherpa does is they put the bid out and different transport companies then bid on that. I had a gentleman from Miami who was making the trip back and forth and he called me. I was under the impression I would get a 24 to 48-hour notice. He was very professional when he showed up and he delivered my car safely. But he only gave me half hour notice on my end before he wanted to get the car. The car was picked up on a Tuesday morning and it was delivered on Friday. I was still in Arizona. My daughter-in-law and son were having the car delivered. The gentleman texted me Thursday night and said, “Let them know that I’ll be there first thing in the morning.†It was already midnight in Florida so they didn’t get the message. In the end, it all worked out fine despite the transport guy not quite meeting the expectations that Sherpa said I would get from a carrier. The car was delivered exactly as they said it would be. It made it fine. I was promised upfront by Sherpa a free car wash but my car was clean, so I didn’t use the car wash. I was very happy.”

“My sister was living down from New York. She was gonna drive, but then we decided that it wasn’t in her best interest to drive. I had to get her car down to Florida. I tried one other place first and I called them up. They didn`t answer the phone and so I looked at some online reviews, and I saw some pretty good ones for Sherpa. I called them up. The guy was super nice. He quoted me $1,000. The first quote I got from the other place was $895. I told him that I got a quote lower than that. He said that that the other company would probably call me back after they pick up the car and say that they were having trouble or this or that, and it would be this much more. I went with Sherpa and gave him a $300 deposit. Then he went over everything. It was very clear that I would give the driver $700. I brought my sister down to Florida. We took the car over to my cousin`s. They picked up the car a few days later because time wasn`t critical. Then a week later, I got a call from the driver. He asked me where he could drop it off ‘cause he had a big semi. We met, picked up the car, paid him the 700, and everything was perfect. Incidentally, the guy at the other place that I called first was a real jerk. He called me a few days later and said that they couldn`t do the move for 895 and that it would be more like 1,495. I was pissed off. I told him that somebody else already did it for 1,000. Then he said the same thing that the Sherpa guy said, that the company would call back and tell they had trouble with the truck. Overall, it went great. I was very pleased.”

“I`m in Florida and I needed a SUV that was in South Carolina. I had an accident and I wasn’t gonna go back there to get the car so I needed it transported down. I checked online on the Consumer and Better Business Bureau and came up with a transport company then I went by with Consumer Reports. When I called Sherpa, it seemed like a good deal so I went with them. Sherpa`s customer service reps called and kept in contact with me. I was told that the SUV would be picked up on Friday and will be delivered between Monday and Wednesday. I got the vehicle on Monday morning and when it was delivered, the driver gave me a call. He said that they will be here within the hour and they were. He was courteous and the vehicle arrived in good condition. Also, the quote I was provided was fair. When we negotiated the price, that was the set price and there was no change. I was given a high quality of service and I was very happy. I would be a repeat customer.”

“I had a good experience with Sherpa in 2020, shipping a car from Florida to Montana, to Bozeman. The company was reliable. They picked up the car when they said they would and when I met with the particular drivers, they were solid guys. I developed a lot of confidence and entrusted him with my car. Four years later, the same car was going to Bozeman from Florida and I called Sherpa. Again, they picked it up on time and lo and behold, it was the same drivers that drove four years prior. I was very happy. The car arrived on time and I didn`t see any damage to the vehicle. It picked up dirt along the way though because it`s an outside carrier. Some of my friends had problems with the largest carrier going East and West. So, I volunteered Sherpa`s name. I don`t know who they used but I would have used Sherpa. In the car transport business, you hear horror stories of cars not being picked up and delivered in time, and waiting in car lots for weeks on end, but I`ve never experienced that with Sherpa. My two times using them have been very positive. People can make their own decision but from a price point standpoint, it`s about the same. And if somebody is a lot cheaper, buyer beware. Sherpa’s price went up, like everything else with gas prices going up, but it was competitive and fair. The only thing is, sometimes I`m persistent, so I’m gonna make calls. If I`ve got a question, I`m gonna chase somebody to get an answer and sometimes, I had to make a second or third call just to follow up and get the answer I was looking for from Sherpa.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Lutz, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping
