Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Google
★★★★★

“Used this company to ship my car from Toronto, Canada to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and I couldn’t recommend them any more. They’re price is worth every penny. From the moment you book them they contact you and tell you all the details necessary. I booked on a Friday and I had my car picked up on Saturday and delivered to my door Monday. JUST AMAZING.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I couldn’t be happier with the service. Especially during the pandemic, as we all know customer service has dropped off since the pandemic began 2 1/2 years ago. But today and with this company you can’t tell. This is a five star rating and I’m extremely happy with the service and I have already recommended this group to two other people who are relocating more than 3000 miles.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa’s rep was very competent, amenable, and answered all my questions. Pick-up was Fort Lauderdale, drop-off was Alexandria, Virginia. The courier-driver picked the car up Friday and it was here on Tuesday. It was fast. The driver was polite. He parked on the street right in front of my building, and I met him.”

Factors that affect Fort Lauderdale Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Fort Lauderdale. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but Fort Lauderdale’s location near major highways like I-95 and I-75 can help optimize routes and potentially reduce costs.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than smaller cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier. This is particularly relevant in Fort Lauderdale, where many residents own larger vehicles for beach trips and outdoor activities.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Fort Lauderdale. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers additional protection from Florida’s intense sun, occasional tropical storms, and road debris.
  • Seasonality: Fort Lauderdale’s peak tourist season (December to April) can affect car shipping prices. Snowbirds moving vehicles during this time may face higher costs due to increased demand for auto transport services.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas like Fort Lauderdale are generally easier and cheaper to service than rural locations. However, specific neighborhoods or gated communities might affect accessibility and pricing.
  • Fuel Prices: Fluctuations in fuel costs can impact car shipping rates. Fort Lauderdale’s proximity to major ports may help stabilize these costs compared to inland cities.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Inoperable cars require special equipment, potentially increasing the cost of shipping to or from Fort Lauderdale.

Understanding these factors can help you better estimate the cost of car shipping to or from Fort Lauderdale. For more detailed information on pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for your vehicle, learn more about the differences between open vs. enclosed car shipping.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Fort Lauderdale car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is the most cost-effective option for auto transport to or from Fort Lauderdale. It offers greater flexibility and lower rates compared to enclosed carriers.
  • Select convenient locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major highways like I-95 or I-595. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your Fort Lauderdale car shipping needs.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Auto transport to Fort Lauderdale may be more affordable during off-peak seasons when snowbirds aren’t flooding the city. Plan your shipment accordingly to potentially save on costs.

How does Fort Lauderdale Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process in Fort Lauderdale, FL, requires careful planning and consideration of local factors. To ensure a smooth auto transport experience, follow these steps:

1. Get an instant quote: Visit Sherpa Auto Transport’s website or call (877) 850-1231 to receive a price-locked quote for your Fort Lauderdale car shipping needs.

2. Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment details with Sherpa’s team.

3. Prepare your vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car thoroughly. Fort Lauderdale’s humid climate can cause dirt and salt buildup, so a clean car helps identify any pre-existing damage. Remove personal items and valuable to prevent potential theft or damage during transport.

4. Meet the carrier: Sherpa offers door-to-door service, so you’ll meet the carrier at your specified location in Fort Lauderdale. Be prepared for possible traffic delays, especially during peak tourist seasons or on busy highways like I-95 or I-595.

5. Track your shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, Sherpa will provide regular updates on its status.

6. Receive your vehicle: Upon arrival, inspect your car for any damages and pay the remaining balance to complete the car transport process.

When shipping a car to or from Fort Lauderdale, consider the city’s unique characteristics. The tropical climate means your vehicle may be exposed to intense sun, high humidity, and occasional heavy rains during transport. Opt for enclosed transport if you’re concerned about weather exposure, especially during hurricane season (June to November).

By following these steps and working with a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport, you can ensure a hassle-free auto transport experience in the vibrant city of Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from Fort Lauderdale, FL, it’s essential to be aware of local regulations and prepare for your move. Fort Lauderdale car shipping can be a breeze with the right information. First, consider removing your SunPass transponder before auto transport to avoid toll charges. Florida requires vehicles to be registered within 30 days of establishing residency. The process involves providing proof of insurance, completing a title application, and paying fees at the local DMV.

Fort Lauderdale’s warm, humid climate can affect your vehicle. Before car shipping, ensure your car’s air conditioning is in good condition. When you arrive, be prepared for occasional flooding during the rainy season. Parking in Fort Lauderdale often requires permits in residential areas, so check with your new neighborhood association.

For utilities, Florida Power & Light (FPL) provides electricity, while the City of Fort Lauderdale manages water services. Popular internet providers include AT&T, Xfinity, and CenturyLink. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and, if needed, enroll your children in Broward County Public Schools.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Fort Lauderdale?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Fort Lauderdale. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Fort Lauderdale?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Fort Lauderdale?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Fort Lauderdale?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Fort Lauderdale

When planning car shipping to or from Fort Lauderdale, FL, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique climate and seasonal factors. Fort Lauderdale experiences a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. This weather pattern significantly impacts auto transport schedules and vehicle preparation.

During the summer months (May to October), Fort Lauderdale sees frequent afternoon thunderstorms and occasional hurricanes. If you’re shipping a car during this period:

  • Ensure your vehicle is properly sealed to prevent water damage
  • Consider scheduling your car transport outside the peak hurricane season (August to October)
  • Be prepared for potential delays due to severe weather

Winter in Fort Lauderdale (November to April) is mild and dry, making it an ideal time for auto transport. However, this is also the peak tourist season and when ‘snowbirds’ flock to the area. To ensure smooth car shipping services:

  • Book your Fort Lauderdale car shipping well in advance to secure better rates and availability
  • Consider scheduling your shipment just before or after the peak season to avoid higher costs
  • If possible, opt for flexible pickup and delivery dates to accommodate potential schedule changes

Year-round, when preparing your vehicle for shipping to Fort Lauderdale, FL, remember to:

  • Remove or secure any loose items inside the car to prevent damage during transport
  • Consider using a sunshade for the windshield to protect the interior from intense Florida sun
  • Ensure your car’s air conditioning system is in good working order for comfort upon arrival

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient car shipping experience to or from Fort Lauderdale, regardless of the time of year.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

For students considering car shipping to Fort Lauderdale for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at local universities. Nova Southeastern University requires parking permits for all vehicles on campus, available through online registration. Most dorms don’t include parking, so plan accordingly. Florida Atlantic University’s Davie campus offers free parking, but spaces are limited. At Broward College, parking decals are mandatory and can be purchased online. For long-term storage during breaks, consider using a car transport service to ship your vehicle home. Fort Lauderdale’s warm climate means snow tires aren’t necessary, but prepare for occasional heavy rains. Before shipping a car to Fort Lauderdale, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to Florida. Many auto transport companies offer enclosed shipping options to protect your vehicle from Florida’s intense sun and potential tropical storms. Planning ahead ensures a smooth transition for both you and your car when starting your college journey in Fort Lauderdale.

“I’ve had horrible experiences making calls a 2 yrs ago, planning a move and needing my car shipped. I was getting hammered for a couple weeks by annoying calls, texts, and emails from many transport companies that didn’t seem legit. Fast forward, my moving plans fell through, and this time around, I took my time researching for reliable transport companies. I stumbled upon Sherpa reviews here, which made me more comfortable and confident to call, needing my car shipped from San Diego to Florida. Customer service was excellent with my first call, explained how transport works, they aren’t like the companies that have hundreds of random people calling, texting, and emailing, asked for a window date I needed my car picked up, and got a quote done. I felt great after the call. Communication was top notch from customer service to the driver. 2 weeks later, I got a call from the driver letting me know what day and time he’s arriving. The driver actually arrived a day or 2 earlier that was on a Sunday, which wasn’t a problem. I took pics of the outside and inside my car. The driver took pics as well, including pics of my car being loaded on the truck that were also sent to me through text message. The driver was very detailed, and told me he’ll have updates in the next couple days. That Wednesday morning, the driver sent me a text with a picture of his truck that had other cars on it, and said my car will be delivered early in the morning Thursday! I was impressed how fast shipping was! That Thursday, a family was contacted by the driver for delivery. The delivery was very smooth, recieved a pic of my car in a nearby parking lot due to his truck being too big for residential areas that was less than 1 mile away. My family member retrieved my car after doing an inspection with the driver. No scratches or damages whatsoever! Received the bill of lading afterwards. It’s nice having your car at its final destination before I fly out! I’m very impressed with this company! I highly recommend Sherpa!”

“We were moving from California to Florida with two vehicles and pets, and a transport was easier with traveling with animals. Sherpa’s agent was easy to work with and very knowledgeable. I did the quote online and I screenshotted it. But then, I had questions so I called. The gentleman I talked to was super nice and he gave me a quote which was higher. I gave him my original quote and asked if he’d be able to match the rate. And he matched the online rate. They were supposed to pick up on a Monday, and they ended up picking up on a Sunday, but they called ahead of time the day before and let us know. Then, we had to bring the vehicles to a larger intersection because the roads were too windy for the truck to get up. We didn’t know that until they called to say that they couldn’t get up there and asked if we could bring the cars down. Then, they walked around the vehicles, took pictures, noted any dings or dents as they went, and they emailed us the bill of lading which had all of the information and photos attached. From the Los Angeles area to Sarasota, the transport was supposed to take 5 to 10 days, and it took 2. Two guys did the transport and they drove all night long. It was crazy.”

“Just used them to transport my mom’s old 1993 Del Sol from Inverness, FL to Pittsburgh, PA. Created the request on Sat 7 Oct. Same day I received confirmation of the booking and price (lower than the other companies I contacted). Received an email on Sun 8 Oct that they were still searching for a driver. On Mon 9 Oct, I received an email indicating a driver was located. At 3 PM I received a call informing me the driver would like to pick up at 6 PM the same day. Wow that was quick. Driver arrived at 6:40 pm on Mon 9 Oct – first working day after my initial contact. The driver did call me directly to confirm the person she was to obtain the car from – my sister. Since the truck was so large and my Pittsburgh location is down narrow streets, I decided to change the delivery location to a barely used strip mall directly off the interstate. On Tue at 9:10 AM I texted the new location to my Sherpa contact. My Sherpa contact agreed and indicated the car should be delivered the same day. The driver did call me, 30 minutes before she expected to arrive at the strip mall parking lot. Wow by 6:30 PM on Tue 10 Oct the car was delivered in perfect condition. Seriously it could not have been easier or better service delivered. I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport!!!!”

“I had a positive experience with Sherpa. If you are using a transport company please go into it knowing that it is a very aggressive industry. To get a quote you are required to provide your phone number and the various brokers, including Sherpa, will call and/or repeatedly until you tell them you’ve gone with someone else. Please also understand that these are brokers and not truckers. They are not the ones who will physically be transporting your vehicle. All brokers require some sort of deposit up front which you can use a credit card for but the balance due is required in cash or money order or sometimes Zelle due to the trucking company upon delivery. That’s standard. If you pay all by cc you will pay more and all upfront. Sherpa called me on a Sunday. I told the rep I went with someone else. His response was, “Ok. If anything falls through or you need us in the future, please reach out.” He seemed sincere. Well my first broker DID fall through, and based solely on the Sherpa rep’s response I called them back to use them. They weren’t the least expensive but sometimes you get what you pay for. I paid the deposit on a Monday afternoon and my trucker picked up on Wednesday and the car delivered from NC to FL on Thursday. I worked with Ivy and she was very knowledgeable and not pushy. She answered all my questions and explained the complete process without coming across as a sales person. The transport was smooth and without issue. One recommendation for Sherpa is to send a “thank you” and “how did we do” follow up email after the transport is complete. One broker sent auto-generated emails with general information about the transport business and things to look out for. Sherpa should do that too. It’s good info to have. I would use Sherpa again if I needed transport.”

“From the moment I contacted Sherpa Auto Transport, everything was smooth and efficient. I placed a call on Friday, had a call back by Saturday morning and transport arranged by Monday. They picked the car up in FL on Wednesday morning and we had it in San Antonio, TX on Thursday night. The driver was very responsive and courteous and his truck was immaculate. I was also extremely impressed with his driving ability. We have a sloped driveway and he maneuvered the trailer deftly right up to the garage door with literally a half inch of clearance to spare. The car arrived in the exact condition it was when it left. I have never transported a car before and to say it was a little bit daunting is an understatement. After getting the run around from another carrier, Sherpa really stepped in and made things easy. They were patient, explained the process thoroughly and answered all my questions without making me feel stupid for asking. I transported a car that was my father’s (a 1964 Porsche 356) that is very special to our family and I would trust Sherpa with it again.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Fort Lauderdale, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping
