Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

“Top Line Auto Service based out of California dropped the car off. The two brothers met me. I had spoken to Joseph on the phone, and figured out what direction they were coming from, which was east from Florida. And based on where I live, I gave them the best place that I thought would be the easiest to pull up an 18-wheeler, and with a truckload of cars, to offload it and meet them to where they could easily get back on the interstate again and go about their day without having to snake through city traffic.”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey affects car shipping costs to and from Coral Gables, FL. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but the cost per mile often decreases for longer trips.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and affordable option for car shipping to Coral Gables. Enclosed transport offers extra protection but comes at a higher cost, typically 50% more.
  • Season: Auto transport prices in Coral Gables can fluctuate based on the time of year. Summer months and January often see higher demand and prices due to snowbirds and vacation travel.
  • Route Popularity: Shipping to or from Coral Gables along major routes like I-95 or Florida’s Turnpike can be more cost-effective due to higher carrier availability.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your car shipment at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling vehicles from Coral Gables, FL.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Pick strategic locations: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-95 or Florida’s Turnpike. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible with dates: The more adaptable you are with pickup and delivery dates, the better options you’ll have for cost-effective car shipping services. Consider off-peak seasons for potential savings.
  • Consider terminal-nearby locations: While Sherpa doesn’t offer terminal-to-terminal services, choosing locations near transport hubs in the Miami area can sometimes lead to more competitive pricing for your Coral Gables auto transport needs.

How does Coral Gables Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process in Coral Gables, FL, requires careful planning and consideration of local factors. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you ship your vehicle to or from this beautiful city:

  • Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a car shipping quote from a reputable auto transport company. Provide details about your vehicle, desired pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
  • Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car transport service. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa Auto Transport.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash your car thoroughly and document any existing damage. Remove personal items and valuable accessories. Given Coral Gables’ warm climate, ensure your car’s air conditioning is working properly for the driver’s comfort during loading and unloading.
  • Meet the carrier: On pickup day, you or an authorized representative will meet the carrier to hand over the keys and perform an inspection. Coral Gables’ well-maintained streets make for easy access, but be prepared to guide the driver if your location is in a gated community.
  • Track your shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Your car will likely travel along major routes like I-95 or Florida’s Turnpike.
  • Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly. Pay special attention to any salt residue if your vehicle was shipped from a coastal area, as this could potentially cause corrosion if not addressed promptly.

When shipping a car to or from Coral Gables, consider the city’s unique characteristics. Its tropical climate means your vehicle may be exposed to high temperatures and humidity during transport. Additionally, the area’s proximity to the coast could impact shipping times and routes. For a comprehensive guide on how to ship a car, visit our detailed resource page. By following these steps and working with a reliable car shipping company, you can ensure a smooth auto transport experience in Coral Gables, FL.

Coral Gables, Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Coral Gables?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Coral Gables. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Coral Gables?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Coral Gables?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Coral Gables?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Coral Gables

When planning car shipping to or from Coral Gables, FL, it’s crucial to consider the unique climate and seasonal factors that can impact your auto transport experience. Coral Gables enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, but there are still important considerations for those looking to ship a car to or from this beautiful city.

First and foremost, hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) can significantly affect car shipping services in Coral Gables. During this time, it’s wise to:

  • Book your auto transport well in advance
  • Stay informed about weather forecasts
  • Be flexible with pickup and delivery dates
  • Consider purchasing additional insurance coverage

The intense heat and humidity of Coral Gables’ summers can also impact your car transport experience. When shipping a car during the warmer months:

  • Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the vehicle
  • Consider requesting enclosed transport for added protection

While Coral Gables doesn’t experience extreme winter weather, it’s worth noting that car shipping demand can increase during the winter months due to ‘snowbirds’ relocating to Florida. To avoid potential delays and higher costs:

  • Consider scheduling your shipment for early fall or late spring
  • Be prepared for possible rate increases during peak seasons

Consumer Affairs

“I got a new car, and I wanted to send the old car, an 11-year-old Volkswagen Passat which had only 39,000 miles on it, to my son in New York. I looked at three or four different transport companies and Sherpa had the best reviews, so I went with them. Sherpa emailed me and called me, and I was impressed with how quickly they got back to me. Also, they seemed to understand what I was going for. Although I didn’t wanna spend a fortune, I also was not looking to go with cheap and have it affect the car. I told them when I wanted to ship it, and they asked me if I could move up the original date that I chose for a day or two, and I said I could. They asked me if I would be willing to wait a couple of days and I said I would, too. However, I didn’t hear from them afterwards, so I called them and asked what the situation was. They said they were going to get back to me as they were just in the process of looking for a driver, and that they should have a driver within 24 hours. When they found a driver, they got back to me and told me they would ship the car within a day or two, which was exactly the time frame that they had offered. I had said I would be willing to go on an open transport, but they couldn`t get one, so they sent a closed one. Then they called me and said they were gonna foot the price difference. The driver came right to the door when he picked up the car and he spoke with us. He was wonderful. He had a huge tandem truck with him that took up half the street. He got the car, examined it and took pictures. I also took pictures. Two days later, they brought the car to my son right to his door. My son observed that it was in perfect shape and then gave the driver the cash. I had given Sherpa a check originally, and they gave the driver the cash that was due to him. The final cost of the service was exactly what Sherpa told me it would be. I had to give them $275, which I did, and my son had to give them $400. We were supposed to get a $50 gift certificate back, but my son never filled it out. He was entitled to it only if he sent them the bill. Later on, Sherpa sent me a follow-up email asking me what I thought of their service. I thought it was excellent.”

“I searched on the internet and looked at a couple of companies and whatever was written about them. Sherpa appealed to me. I gave them a shot and was very satisfied dealing with them. I booked it initially and it was very clearly explained to me what that entailed, about the payment and about the pricing. That was fine. But at some point I had to cancel and change because of this pandemic and I found them to be very easy to deal with. The people at the office were very personable. They were very accommodating because I needed the two cars. I was stuck in Florida for almost two months longer than I expected, and that worked. The car was going to my granddaughter`s and when I shipped it, we went through a very easy process and the arrangement of the dates. So the communication, one-on-one, was very easy. I don`t believe I lost any money on the cancellation either. The driver was fine as well and they got where they were supposed to get when they were supposed to get there. Prior to this, on two occasions with two separate companies, my car received a ticket and it wasn`t a matter of having the pass in the car on top of a truck. I have photos of the vehicle being driven through a Florida turnpike toll after it was picked up by a truck. I discussed that with Sherpa and they guaranteed me that wouldn`t happen. I haven`t had have this experience with Sherpa so far. I liked the ease of doing business with them.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The rep explained everything very nicely and gave us all the information. He answered all of our questions. It was a couple of days later when they had the driver lined up. They made all the arrangements with our friend in Florida for him to meet the truck to load the vehicle. They did all the legwork for us and we didn`t even have to think about it. The driver was wonderful. When he went to unload my truck, it didn`t start and that scared the living daylights out of him. But he was wonderful about it and he kept his sense of humor. The next time he turned the key, it started. He was super friendly and really nice. We really enjoyed working with him. The quote was right in line with everyone else price-wise. The final cost was right where they said it would be. It was worth every penny and more. It was an absolutely flawless and stress-free experience. Communication was excellent and everything was exactly as promised.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had a four-door Jeep Wrangler transported from Florida to Arizona. Sherpa was very customer-service-oriented when I spoke with them. The reviews about the company really swayed me to use their service. The gal that helped me was personable and explained things well. The price lock option was very nice and I liked that. It was very helpful. Also, the final cost was reasonable. I had one other company that was a little less expensive and the service was great. But I wanted to go with someone I felt more comfortable with. The only thing is they don`t give you an idea of who`s gonna be picking up the car until the last minute. It`s a little scary waiting until the last minute to know for sure if they`re gonna pick it up. But that`s just how the industry works. I was there when the car was picked up and I was there when it was dropped off. I met the driver. The only thing I didn`t like was they stopped on a busy street right by my house when there was one road they could have come on. We had to walk out there and I had to walk to the median. That aside, the driver was courteous. It`s really hard to move those big trucks in and out of residential areas, so I understood. It didn`t bother me that much. Everything worked out great. The intended purpose was fulfilled and there was great customer service.”

“Just used them to transport my mom`s old 1993 Del Sol from Inverness, FL to Pittsburgh, PA. Created the request on Sat 7 Oct. Same day I received confirmation of the booking and price (lower than the other companies I contacted). Received an email on Sun 8 Oct that they were still searching for a driver. On Mon 9 Oct, I received an email indicating a driver was located. At 3 PM I received a call informing me the driver would like to pick up at 6 PM the same day. Wow that was quick. Driver arrived at 6:40 pm on Mon 9 Oct – first working day after my initial contact. The driver did call me directly to confirm the person she was to obtain the car from – my sister. Since the truck was so large and my Pittsburgh location is down narrow streets, I decided to change the delivery location to a barely used strip mall directly off the interstate. On Tue at 9:10 AM I texted the new location to my Sherpa contact. My Sherpa contact agreed and indicated the car should be delivered the same day. The driver did call me, 30 minutes before she expected to arrive at the strip mall parking lot. Wow by 6:30 PM on Tue 10 Oct the car was delivered in perfect condition. Seriously it could not have been easier or better service delivered. I highly recommend Sherpa Auto Transport!!!!”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Coral Gables, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

When choosing an auto transport company for Coral Gables car shipping, consider these key factors: reputation, insurance coverage, and safety record. Research companies with a proven track record in car transport, especially those familiar with Coral Gables’ unique architecture and narrow streets. Check their standing with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and local Florida authorities. Evaluate customer service quality, pricing transparency, and range of car shipping services offered. Be wary of unusually low quotes or pressure tactics. A reputable car shipping company should provide clear communication and accommodate your needs, whether you’re moving a classic car to a Coral Gables show or relocating to this beautiful city.
