Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Florida customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Top Line Auto Service based out of California dropped the car off. The two brothers met me. I had spoken to Joseph on the phone, and figured out what direction they were coming from, which was east from Florida. And based on where I live, I gave them the best place that I thought would be the easiest to pull up an 18-wheeler, and with a truckload of cars, to offload it and meet them to where they could easily get back on the interstate again and go about their day without having to snake through city traffic.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“It didn’t take me too long to get my date I wanted to sent my car from Crestview, Florida to Denver Colorado. I gave Shane the date May 23rd I asked for and the driver arrived on that day I asked for. The dispatcher from the company assigned for me were incredible, the lady dispatcher were on top of informing me on date when the driver will come to pick my car.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“We had two cars to transport from south florida to San Diego. Our sons are both marines newly stationed in CA and they needed their cars. I spoke to another transport company who quote $2500 per car. When I said I wanted to get other quotes, I was sternly informed that I would not find nothing better. Lol.”

Factors that affect Florida Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance and Route: Florida’s location at the southeastern tip of the U.S. can impact shipping costs. Long-distance routes from the Northeast or West Coast typically cost more. However, Florida’s extensive interstate system (I-95, I-75, I-10) can help reduce costs for shipments to major cities like Miami, Orlando, or Jacksonville.
  • Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to Florida. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, may be considered for high-end vehicles to protect against Florida’s intense sun, occasional tropical storms, or road debris.
  • Seasonal Demand: Florida’s popularity as a snowbird destination can affect car shipping prices. Rates often increase during peak migration seasons, typically fall and spring, when many part-time residents transport their vehicles.
  • Vehicle Size and Type: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Florida for beach and outdoor activities, may cost more to ship due to their size and weight. Conversely, compact cars popular in urban areas like Miami or Tampa might be more affordable to transport.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Shipping to major Florida cities like Orlando or Fort Lauderdale is often cheaper than to rural areas. Consider meeting the carrier in a larger city to potentially reduce costs if you’re located in a more remote part of Florida.
  • Timeframe Flexibility: Opting for a flexible pickup window can lead to more competitive rates when shipping your car to or from Florida. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will typically increase the cost.

Understanding these factors can help you plan and budget for your Florida car shipping needs. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Florida car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially for standard vehicles.
  • Pick strategic locations: Discuss with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors about pickup and drop-off points near major Florida interstates like I-95, I-75, or I-4. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before transport. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
  • Stay flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective auto transport opportunities in Florida.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Florida’s car shipping rates can fluctuate based on seasonal demand. Booking during off-peak times, typically outside of winter months, may result in more competitive pricing for your auto transport needs.

How does Florida Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process to or from Florida doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth auto transport experience in the Sunshine State:

  • Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you an idea of costs and options for your Florida auto transport.
  • Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car transport dates. Remember, Florida’s busy seasons (winter for snowbirds, summer for vacationers) can affect availability and prices.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Before the pickup date, wash and inspect your car, remove personal items, and perform basic maintenance. In Florida’s humid climate, it’s especially important to check for any existing rust or corrosion.
  • Meet the carrier: Your auto transport company will arrange for pickup. If you’re shipping to Florida, consider the state’s extensive highway system (I-95, I-75, I-4) when choosing convenient pickup and drop-off locations.
  • Track your shipment: While your car is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Florida’s occasional severe weather (hurricanes, tropical storms) can sometimes cause delays, so keep in touch with your shipping provider.
  • Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly and complete the necessary paperwork. If you’re new to Florida, remember to register your vehicle within 10 days of establishing residency.

For a more detailed guide on how to ship a car, including tips specific to Florida’s unique climate and geography, check out our comprehensive car shipping guide. Florida Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from Florida, it’s crucial to understand local regulations and prepare for your move. Florida car shipping requires attention to specific details unique to the Sunshine State.

First, consider your toll transponder. Florida uses SunPass for most toll roads. If you’re moving away, remember to remove it to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to Florida, you can easily obtain a SunPass online or at various retail locations.

Vehicle registration in Florida is straightforward. New residents have 30 days to register their vehicles. You’ll need proof of insurance, a valid ID, and your out-of-state title. Florida doesn’t require regular vehicle inspections, but emissions tests may be necessary in some counties.

When settling in Florida, consider these essential tasks:

  • Set up utilities: Major providers include Florida Power & Light for electricity and local water authorities for water services.
  • Internet services: Popular providers include Xfinity, AT&T, and Spectrum.
  • Register to vote: You can do this online or at your local Supervisor of Elections office.
  • School enrollment: Contact your local school district for registration requirements.
  • Library cards: Most Florida libraries offer free cards to residents.

If you’re leaving Florida, don’t forget to:

  • Cancel local memberships (gyms, clubs)
  • Forward your mail through USPS
  • Notify your current utility providers

When using car shipping services to or from Florida, consider the state’s climate. The hot, humid weather and occasional hurricanes can affect your vehicle. Ensure your auto transport company is prepared for these conditions.

Florida’s extensive highway system, including I-95, I-75, and I-4, makes it accessible for car transport companies. However, traffic can be heavy, especially during tourist seasons, so plan accordingly when scheduling your car shipping.

By understanding these local nuances, you’ll ensure a smoother transition when shipping a car to or from the Sunshine State. Whether you’re headed to the beaches or leaving them behind, proper preparation makes all the difference in your Florida move.

Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Florida?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Florida. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Florida?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Florida?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Florida?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Florida

When planning car shipping to or from Florida, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique seasonal factors. Florida’s climate and seasonal events can significantly impact your auto transport experience. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

1. Hurricane Season: From June to November, Florida is prone to hurricanes. This can cause delays in car shipping services. Consider scheduling your auto transport outside this period for smoother shipping.

2. Snowbird Migration: Florida experiences a significant influx of winter residents from October to April. This can lead to increased demand for car shipping, potentially affecting prices and availability. Book your Florida car shipping well in advance during these months.

3. Heat Precautions: Florida’s hot climate, especially in summer, can affect your vehicle during transport. When you ship a car to Florida, consider using a sunshade for the windshield and removing heat-sensitive items from the vehicle.

4. Tourist Seasons: Peak tourist seasons (spring break, summer holidays) can impact car transport routes and schedules. Plan your car shipping around these busy periods if possible.

5. Rainy Season: Florida’s rainy season (May to October) can affect road conditions. When shipping a car, ensure your vehicle is prepared for potential exposure to heavy rains during transport.

By considering these factors, you can better plan your Florida car shipping experience. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for specific advice tailored to your situation and the current season in Florida.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Florida

When considering car shipping to Florida for college, it’s crucial to understand each university’s parking policies. Most Florida universities require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. For instance, the University of Florida in Gainesville offers various parking options, but spaces are limited. Students should plan ahead and budget for parking fees.

Many off-campus apartments near Florida universities provide parking, but it’s not guaranteed. Before shipping your car or using auto transport services, confirm parking availability at your residence. For on-campus students, some Florida colleges offer designated lots for long-term parking during breaks, which is ideal if you’re planning to ship your car home during holidays.

Weather is another factor to consider when transporting a car to Florida. While snow tires aren’t necessary, preparing for hurricane season is essential. Ensure your vehicle is equipped with proper insurance coverage, including comprehensive protection against weather-related damages. Additionally, verify that your roadside assistance plan is valid in Florida, as this can be a lifesaver in unexpected situations.

Lastly, research Florida car shipping options well in advance. Reputable car transport companies can help you navigate the process of shipping a car to your Florida campus, ensuring your vehicle arrives safely and on time for the start of the semester.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Florida

Florida is home to several military installations across various branches. For those in the armed forces considering car shipping to Florida, here’s some practical advice:

Parking: Most bases offer on-site parking, but space can be limited. Some installations, like Naval Air Station Jacksonville, have designated long-term parking areas. However, it’s best to check with your specific base for details.

Vehicle Registration: Florida offers military members some flexibility. You can keep your home state registration or register in Florida. If choosing Florida, you’ll need to visit a local tax collector’s office with your military ID, proof of Florida insurance, and vehicle title.

Neighborhood Parking: Areas around bases generally have ample street parking. However, some communities, especially in urban areas like Tampa (near MacDill AFB), may have restrictions. Always check local regulations.

Resources: Most bases offer commissaries, exchanges, and recreational facilities. The MyNavy Family App is an excellent resource for Navy families, while the MilitaryOneSource website provides comprehensive information for all branches.

When considering car transport to Florida, remember that Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount. We sincerely thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice.

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“At two different times, I spoke to two people who were both very helpful and knowledgeable. Price-wise, Sherpa Auto Transport was the same as everyone. They were all within the same ballpark of each other. But I felt they were more comfortable after speaking to them. Also, I could see why they had the reviews because they were exactly like it was when talking to them. And everything was smooth. They offered a free car wash. Everything was wonderful. I submitted the thing through online, and they sent an email back with the quote. It was a day later, they called to go over a couple of things. I’m in South Florida and the car would go to Boston, and the tires in Florida were not the type of tires I need for winter up north. So, that would cause a delay because we had to wait for the tires to come in. She said, “No problem. I’ll make a note in the system so we can still hold on to the quote we gave you and you don’t lose the price. And as soon as you know when the tires will be in and when you can do this, just let us know.” Once I knew when the tires would be done, I called them back. She guided me on what window to take for pick-up, so it would be there when my daughter got there. She helped me with figuring what would be the best dates for everything. And while I was on the phone with her, she sent me an email which I had to click on and pay the deposit, and she stayed on the phone with me while the whole thing went through to make sure they got it. There were no glitches in their system or on my end. Within a day, she sent me the name of the company that would take the car, gave me all their contact information if I needed anything from them. The pick-up went very well. It was not the driver’s fault that it was pouring rain. I felt bad. Those things happen. In that type of business, it’s not like an airplane where people know what time they would arrive and depart. The driver would get stuck based on whoever is in front of him. He thought he would be there between 10:00 and 11:00 in the morning, and it wound up being more 2 o’clock in the afternoon. I knew he couldn’t get into my neighborhood. So, the company gave me the driver’s direct phone number so I could pre-arrange a pick-up where he could get the truck and be able to get the car. So, between the weather and the rain, it delayed him. The pick-up wound being later than expected. The drop-off, again, was not his fault, the car that was dropped off before us gave the wrong address and did not answer their phone. It was my brother-in-law that handled that and they agreed it would be too dark by the time the driver would be able to bring the car. So, they said they would do it first thing in the morning and they were there at 7:30 with the car.”

“I saw really great reviews for Sherpa and there was nothing that stood out to me that made me want to deter from them. I had a good feeling just from reading the reviews and the company history. They were the better option. I filled out a form online and within a few hours, I received an email stating that they could help me further make my decision on everything else. It was a good experience and the salespeople were not pushy. The customer support helped me. I was able to get the shipment place and everything during that call, so everything was handled. Sherpa offered multiple options for the transport and I chose the uncovered one. I was quoted a higher price for the service. I spoke to a representative and they noticed that the year of my car was wrong so they changed that and I got a lower price. That was really good. I really like the price lock too. I wasn’t able to pay over the phone and I was able to hold that amount for a few days until I was able to pay for that shipment. That was really helpful. I really liked that I was able to keep the new quoted amount. The car was transported from Florida to Michigan and the delivery was very fast. The car came within two or three days. And the delivery service was very friendly. They kept me updated throughout the entire time. When the car got here, they gave me a rundown. It was my first time seeing this car as I purchased it. They made sure I took pictures if there were any issues. I liked the process through and through. I would tell others to check out the Sherpa website, fill out the forms and appropriate things for the vehicle that they need. I have recommended them to my friends and I would definitely tell them to check it out.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa’s price was more expensive than some of the other quotes I received, but my decision to go with them was based off of feedback I saw online versus some of these companies that were a bit more sketchy. There’s always somebody who’s gonna complain, but less people were saying that Sherpa had any problems with the services. People received their vehicle when they were expected. I had read some companies that held people’s vehicles. Sometimes the transporters drop out or the vehicles were swapped between transporters. I didn’t wanna deal with any of that, so if I had to pay a little extra for peace of mind, then I did so. Setting up the transport was easy. I called Sherpa, spoke to somebody who told me what to do and walked me through everything, then I filled out the paperwork. They kept me up to date through the entire process. The pick-up location was at St. Cloud, Florida and the car carrier parked on a bigger street, one that had more access, then the guy walked to my family member’s house to pick up the truck. When they dropped off the vehicle, it was exactly as it left. I live on a very busy street, which is not conducive to parking a big truck, but I had enough room in front of my house that they were able to unload it without an issue and it only took about 10 minutes for them to do so.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I picked Sherpa because they were the only ones that answered the phone and said their company name and they have the price lock thing where people aren’t gonna get charged anything extra, because I read a bunch of horror stories about that. The Sherpa guy was nice. They were a bit more than some of the other places, but none of the other guys that answered the phone even said the company they were affiliated with. They were rude on the phone as well. I was skeptical because I read a bunch of reviews. Dealing with auto transport people was interesting, but it all worked out nice. I’m in Meridian, Idaho and Sherpa took the car to Winter Garden, Florida, which is right outside of Orlando. The guy that they contracted got delayed in traffic and showed up later, but he was amazing. He was delivering the car to my daughter. She got off work late at night and he waited for her. Overall, Sherpa did exactly what they said for the price they said they would and they were great people to deal with. The driver is not one of theirs because they contract those guys, but he was over-the-top nice.”

Consumer Affairs

“I was moving from Michigan to Florida and I reached out to Sherpa to transport my car. I talked to other companies and a lot of them were being overly otimistic and over promising. But when I spoke to Sherpa, they told me about the deal, how it works, what they could guarantee, and what they couldn’t promise me. They laid out the most realistic picture of what could be expected and based on their feedback, I changed my plan completely. I was going to ship the vehicle right around the time that I was moving out of the home, and it was right around the 4th of July holiday weekend, and they said if there was any way I could make it any sooner, they could get it where I wanted it to be. Otherwise, it was likely not going to happen. So that dialogue is really solidified it for me. The drivers were great and they arrived about an hour early for the pickup, which is always appreciated. They encouraged me to videotape as they were loading, to take as many photos, and to be there during the loading process right up to the point where the door closed. There were two drivers in the car and they were alternating. They muscled it down and yet again, they were ahead of schedule by about 40 minutes on the delivery. On a cross country drive, you can’t ask for more. They delivered it right to the front gate with 100% no issues. I wasn’t here when it was delivered but my father received the vehicle and he said they told him that he could witness the whole extraction of the vehicle, just to make sure that there were no hidden mishaps. So, it was pretty seamless. Ironically, because of the change in plans that they suggested, the price came in cheaper than I originally anticipated, because scheduling it a little bit earlier in that month saved me $350 over the original bids that I’ve been getting from the other groups. So that was great. The pricing was right where we wanted it to be. I used to buy vehicles from out of state and I was always at the mercy of whoever shipped the vehicle to pick the carrier. This time, knowing what I know about them and the carriers that they select, I want to use Sherpa again.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Florida, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Florida. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping
