Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The distance between New Haven, CT and your destination significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer routes, such as cross-country shipments, typically cost more than shorter, regional transports.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to or from New Haven. Enclosed carriers offer extra protection but are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: New Haven’s weather can affect car shipping prices. Winter conditions, including snow and ice, may increase costs due to potential delays and safety concerns on roads like I-95 and I-91.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Urban areas like New Haven are typically cheaper for car shipping than rural locations. Proximity to major highways such as I-95 can also influence costs.
  • Timing: Flexible pickup windows often result in lower prices. Rush or guaranteed pickup services in New Haven will increase your auto transport costs.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost of car shipping services.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your car transport to or from New Haven more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your New Haven car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost savings.
  • Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find pickup and dropoff points near major interstates like I-95 or I-91. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your New Haven auto transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer or holidays when shipping a car to or from New Haven, CT. Off-peak times may offer more competitive rates.
  • Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re shipping multiple vehicles, ask about potential discounts. Sherpa Auto Transport often provides reduced rates for multi-car shipments.

New Haven, Connecticut Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from New Haven?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from New Haven. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from New Haven?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from New Haven?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to New Haven?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in New Haven

When planning car shipping to or from New Haven, CT, it’s crucial to consider the city’s seasonal weather patterns. New Haven experiences all four seasons distinctly, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

In winter, New Haven often sees heavy snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re scheduling car shipping services during this time:

  • Ensure your vehicle is equipped with all-season tires, as carriers cannot transport cars with snow chains.
  • Choose pickup and drop-off locations on level ground to prevent issues with icy inclines.
  • Remove any items from your car that could freeze and potentially damage the interior.

During summer, New Haven can experience high temperatures and humidity. When shipping a car in these conditions:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your car’s interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items that could melt or warp.

It’s also important to note peak times for car transport in New Haven. As home to Yale University, the city sees increased demand for auto transport services at the beginning and end of academic semesters. To avoid potential delays and higher costs:

  • Plan your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak periods if possible.
  • Book your car transport well in advance during these busy times.

By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother New Haven car shipping experience. Always consult with your chosen car shipping company for the most up-to-date advice on transporting your vehicle to or from New Haven, CT.

Reviews from our Connecticut Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Connecticut customers:

BBB
★★★★★

“We had a GREAT experience with Sherpa and we highly recommend them. When we decided to ship our cars from Florida to Connecticut I was very apprehensive about choosing a shipping company. Some reviews were daunting with added costs, missed pick-ups or prolonged deliveries. We had none of that! The initial explanation of how this whole business works was clearly explained to me by the Sherpa representative when making the reservation to ship two cars. The Sherpa`s price for this service was extremely competitive with other shipping companies.Sherpa`s representatives and the dispatch for the driver were responsive and provided timely updates throughout the process. Our cars were picked up on time and the driver was very nice. Our cars actually beat us to Connecticut taking only three days. It was also apparent that our cars were washed before they were delivered. They were cleaner than when they left. Sherpa`s price lock promise was very reassuring and the estimate for this service was exactly what we paid. We have had some pretty bad moving experiences in the past. This experience with Sherpa has been one of the best. We would use them again without question.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had a wonderful experience with Sherpa. They were informative about my concerns. The support staff was always available. However, they have a large window of time for the pickup. I was in another state and had to be there for the full part of the window. They said that I could have had someone else be there to sign for the car. But that was gonna be inconvenient. It turned out that they weren’t getting bids until the later part of it. If I had known the pickup a little earlier in the window, it would have been less stressful. But they made a very good effort at the very end to get somebody so it worked out perfectly. Once I got the driver, he was very responsive to me about arranging a pickup point for the car. When I got back to Connecticut, he called me and we set up a drop-off point. It was easy to converse with him. He was flexible and wanted to solve the problem.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Car was picked up and delivered exactly within timeframe Sherpa provided. All the way from Connecticut to Denver. People were nice and responsive when I called. You do have to take a leap of faith with all these type of brokers, because pick up often does go right up to the wire. However, Sherpa did use their “sweeten the pot” contribution (a portion of their $300 fee) of 75$ to get an auto transport commitment. This whole process is not very high tech, but it does work well. I did call around and everyone seemed competitive within a couple of hundred dollars. This was the first time I ever shipped a car, and if I ever have to do this again, there`s no reason to go anywhere else. I know some people claim they had issues, but I`m willing to bet that those are anomalies. Nothing is ever 100% but as far as my experience, I`m 100% satisfied with their service.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“Although there was a hiccup with the timing of the car being picked up to ship (driver was delayed because of heavy traffic due to an accident and then a water hose repair required on the truck while he was traveling to me), the communication with the shipper (not the driver) was excellent – always responsive to my questions. The car was shipped from CT to CA, picked up on the Wednesday evening and delivered to the final location on the following Tuesday in good condition, if not somewhat dirty, but that`s why they reimburse you $20 to clean your car at its destination. Sherpa was competitively priced and I would definitely recommend them and use them again.”

Google
★★★★★

“I reached out to sherpa to get my car shipped from CA to CT and the whole process was super easy and the price was $1325 total. Sherpa hooked me up with a truck from Discovery Enterprise Logistics and they were great. They called us about the pickup time, progress updates, and expected delivery. It took 10 days to make the trip across the country and deliver to my house. The car was delivered in the same condition when it was shipped. I have no complaints whatsoever. I just hope Sherpa will honor their promise of a $50 rebate which I just submitted to them. I will update this review if they don’t follow through or try any funny business.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in New Haven, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Connecticut. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
