Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.

  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Bridgeport, CT significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances typically mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Bridgeport. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection from Connecticut’s varied weather conditions, including occasional snow and rain.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, like SUVs or trucks, cost more to ship than standard cars due to the space they occupy and their weight.
  • Season: Auto transport prices to and from Bridgeport can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months and January often see higher demand and prices, while spring and fall may offer more competitive rates.
  • Route Accessibility: Bridgeport’s proximity to major highways like I-95 and Route 8 can help keep costs down. However, shipping to more remote areas of Connecticut may increase prices.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates often result in lower car shipping costs. Rush or guaranteed delivery services to or from Bridgeport will typically be more expensive.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles that can be driven onto the transport truck are less expensive to ship than inoperable ones requiring special equipment for loading and unloading.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Bridgeport, CT. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Bridgeport car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways like I-95 or Route 8. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective shipping times.
  • Opt for terminal-to-terminal: While Sherpa specializes in door-to-door service, discussing nearby terminal options with our advisors might reveal additional savings opportunities for your Bridgeport car transport needs.

For those moving to Bridgeport, you can easily obtain an E-ZPass online or at select retail locations.

Connecticut requires vehicle emissions testing every two years for most vehicles. New residents must register their vehicles within 60 days of establishing residency. The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles vehicle registrations, and you can start the process online to save time.

Bridgeport, Connecticut Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Bridgeport?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Bridgeport. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Bridgeport?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Bridgeport?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Bridgeport?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Bridgeport

When planning car shipping to or from Bridgeport, CT, it’s crucial to consider the seasonal weather patterns that can impact your auto transport experience. Bridgeport experiences all four seasons, each presenting unique challenges for car shipping services.

In winter, Bridgeport often sees significant snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re scheduling car transport during this time:

  • Remove snow tires or chains before shipping, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with these attached.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that could be dangerous in icy conditions.
  • Remove or properly insulate any items in your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage your car during transport.

During summer, while not as extreme as some regions, Bridgeport can experience warm temperatures. When shipping a car in summer:

  • Consider placing a sunshade under the windshield to protect your car’s interior.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle to prevent melting or damage.

Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial when arranging Bridgeport car shipping. The city sees increased demand for auto transport services during specific periods:

  • Late August and early September, when students return to nearby universities.
  • Late spring and early fall, coinciding with the ‘snowbird’ migration.

To potentially save on costs and ensure smoother service, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak times. By keeping these factors in mind, you’ll be well-prepared for a successful auto transport experience to or from Bridgeport, CT.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Bridgeport, Connecticut

When considering car shipping to Bridgeport, Connecticut for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at local universities. Off-campus students should check if their apartments include parking. Remember: Bridgeport experiences snowy winters, so consider winter tires for safety. “My call to Sherpa was answered by Jeff. As I had never shipped a car before Jeff took the time to walk me through the entire process. I Was shipping my Grandson`s car from Florida to Connecticut. Within an hour Sherpa had procured a transport company. Andy from MCW Transport called the next day and the car was picked up the following day. On the pickup day Andy kept us informed as to where the driver was and at what time he was expected to pickup vehicle (there was a delay because of an accident). Couldn`t ask for a nicer driver than Sergio. The car was delivered to Connecticut without any damage (used an open carrier) and within the time frame I was given. Would definitely use Sherpa again if the need arose.”

“This is the third time in the past year that I’ve used a transportation company to ship my car, but my first time using Sherpa; this was by far the easiest and most pleasant experience of all. Price rate was affordable, the driver was caring and gave me updates with pictures during the process. My car was delivered on timely matter, from Connecticut to California on exactly 7 days. I would definitely use Sherpa for any future transports and I recommend to family and friends.”

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa was an excellent choice to ship my car from Connecticut to Colorado. Their quote was competitive with the others. I liked their price guarantee. They were not phased by lack of advanced notice. The car was picked up little more than 1 day after I commited to the shipment. The truck driver was courteous, professional, and just nice. The car was delivered just 3 days later. It was in perfect shape. It was the best experience I could have hoped for.”

Google

“My mother moved into assisted living in Florida and I had to get her car here to Connecticut. I read a lot about scams and agonized about what company to call. Sherpa was highly recommended to me and I was really pleased how well it went. Sherpa stayed in contact with me and the driver was amazing and professional. I got the car without any problems or demands for extra money. I highly recommend them, they did everything they promised.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I purchased a vehicle that was located in Florida and I`m located in Connecticut. So, I needed to transport the vehicle. I went online and Googled transportation companies. For the most part, choosing Sherpa had to do with the reviews that I was seeing on Google. They were good. I dealt with three people and everybody was very professional. They gave me a price right up front and there weren’t any shenanigans. As it turned out, I was able to even get a $100 rebate on my original price because I asked them. So that was great, too. There were no changes in the price once it was set up. They put it on the board and within an hour or two, it was accepted. The final company that picked it up got in touch with me and it all went very smoothly. The driver was concerned about getting into the development where I live and having so many cobblestones because it`s a tractor trailer. But he did a very good job. He contacted me before he got here and to let me know he was an hour away. Sherpa did a nice job photographing the vehicle and they picked it up down in Florida. They took all the pictures of any kind of dings or scratches. The only thing that I would suggest is that they allow you to see that on the bill of lading before they get here. I didn`t get a bill of lading until the driver showed up and he took pictures of the car after he took it off the trailer. Then, that was added to the bill of lading. I would have liked to have seen that before I accepted delivery of the vehicle. I had to give the driver a check for 500 bucks when he took the vehicle off the trailer but there was no way for me to look at the car. It meant that I would have to go back to them. You couldn`t do that right when he took the car off the trailer. But the bill of lading was sent to me immediately after he took the pictures and I signed for it. It was right in my email immediately, so that was good. Everything was very smooth with my experience with Sherpa and the car even got here a day early.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Bridgeport, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Connecticut. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
