Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey from or to Monument, CO significantly impacts car shipping costs. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your car affect shipping prices. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks cost more to transport than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Transport Method: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from Monument. Enclosed transport, while about 50% pricier, offers extra protection for high-value or classic cars against Colorado’s varied weather conditions.
  • Season: Auto transport prices fluctuate seasonally. Summer months and January typically see higher rates due to increased demand. Monument’s snowy winters may also affect pricing and availability.
  • Route: Monument’s proximity to I-25 can be advantageous for car shipping. Routes along major highways are often more affordable than those to remote areas.
  • Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates often result in lower costs. Expedited shipping to or from Monument will increase the price.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the cost.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

Vehicle Transport Registration

When planning your car shipping to Monument, CO, it’s crucial to be aware of local regulations and moving essentials. Colorado requires all vehicles to pass an emissions test before registration, so ensure your car is compliant. The state uses ExpressToll for electronic tolling, but you can remove your transponder before shipping to avoid charges. For auto transport from Monument, remember to cancel your ExpressToll account if you’re leaving the state permanently.

Colorado’s vehicle registration process is straightforward, but you’ll need proof of insurance and a valid ID. New residents have 90 days to register their vehicles. Monument doesn’t require specific parking permits, but be mindful of snow routes during winter months.

When moving to Monument, set up utilities early. Mountain View Electric Association provides electricity, while Monument Water Department handles water services. For internet, you have options like Xfinity and CenturyLink. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll children in Lewis-Palmer School District 38.

If you’re leaving Monument, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and return your library card to Pikes Peak Library District. Monument’s location near I-25 makes it convenient for car transport services. However, be aware of potential weather-related delays, especially during winter months. The area’s semi-arid climate means your vehicle might need extra protection from sun exposure during shipping.

Monument, Colorado Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Monument?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Monument. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Monument?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Monument?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Monument?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Monument

When planning car shipping to or from Monument, CO, it’s crucial to consider the area’s unique seasonal weather patterns. Monument experiences distinct seasons, with snowy winters and mild summers, which can significantly impact auto transport logistics.

During winter months (November to March), Monument car shipping can be challenging due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions. When scheduling car transport during this time:

  • Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers cannot transport vehicles with them installed.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that may be hazardous for transport trucks.
  • Remove any items from your vehicle that could freeze and potentially damage the car’s interior.

In contrast, summers in Monument are generally mild, but it’s still wise to take precautions when shipping a car during warmer months:

  • Consider using a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior from heat damage.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from the car before transport.

Reviews from our Colorado Customers

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Colorado customers:

Yelp
★★★★★

“We contracted with Sherpa to arrange transport of an automobile we purchased from our daughter and son-in-law in Connecticut to our home near Boulder, Colorado. Sherpa notified us that it had found a transporter, that the price would be about $200 higher than its estimate, and that Sherpa would cover the difference–so we paid exactly what Sherpa had promised. They were good in communicating each step of the process. The transporter they engaged similarly kept in touch with us, which was important for a multi-day trip, and we picked up our car when promised with no difficulties. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sherpa Auto Transport.”

“I recently used Sherpa for car transport to send a vehicle to my daughter in Colorado. We decided on Sherpa because a neighbor had a positive experience with them. I compared two other companies before making my decision. The setup process with Sherpa was straightforward. I completed everything online, and they contacted me the next day to confirm the order. The pickup was arranged for two days later. Since the transport truck couldn’t access our street, I met the driver in a nearby commercial area. He was very helpful and efficient, leaving a good impression on me. Sherpa provided a delivery estimate of 5 to 10 days, and the car was delivered in six days. My daughter, who received the car, did not report any issues other than the vehicle being dirty, given that it was transported on an open carrier. I was also happy with Sherpa’s pricing. The quote given initially was the exact amount we paid. This was reassuring, especially since my daughter, a young woman, was the one to receive the car. I felt comfortable with Sherpa and I would use them again.”

“Sincerely our experience with Sherpa was SPOT ON!! From my initial conversation with Dillon who put things in motion to our communication with our driver Samuel Akoto who handled the pick up and delivery of my son’s auto from Colorado to Virginia our experience came without glitches from beginning to end!! I will definitely recommend Sherpa Auto Transport as well as, use their services again!! Thank you Dillon and Sam for your honesty and professionalism!! Doris Cooper and son Ty Curry….we appreciate each of you.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“After speaking to Sherpa Auto Transport, they said that they are not the company that changes the price on you. I heard a lot of other companies don’t pick up cars or try to extort money out of you when they pick up the car. Sherpa said they do not work like that and they explained everything. So, I decided to go with them. I priced one other place. They were comparable. They were right in line from other Facebook groups that I had seen what people paid. It was fair. We met the driver on both ends because it was too tight for the truck to come to pick up in Colorado and I thought that my street would be tight. It’s rare to find a company that does what they say.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Sherpa was absolutely phenomenal. I was doing the auto transport for my sister-in-law who was moving from Colorado to Pennsylvania. She’s wasn’t in the best frame of mind, so we did all of the work to get Sherpa to do this. We made the phone call in November and the car was being picked up in December. Sherpa managed to find somebody who was going to pick up the car, and they were all set up and ready to get there in December. They were booked, but that night, my sister-in-law called and said that she was getting overwhelmed and we needed to cancel. So, we cancelled, paid the cancellation fee, and it was no big deal. The following day, my sister-in-law changed her mind and we re-upped the contract. However, there was a computer glitch in the system and it didn’t back the previous company out of the contract with us, so when we re-upped, we then had two active contracts. Two companies were gonna show up at different days to try to take our car. Sherpa had no idea because the company was the one who needed to know that they were no longer supposed to be coming, and they somehow were never notified. The company showed up and got the car, but it was on a totally different day than we were told they would be coming because it was the original date. Sherpa did all of the leg work. They contacted the people and met with the driver to make sure it was legit. They also refunded the cancellation fee because technically, we got the first contract. They called us every step of the way. They went above and beyond even though the mistake was caused by us cancelling.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Monument, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Colorado. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
