Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Denver customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Let me say that everyone at Sherpa were awesome to work with. They kept me up to date via email on the progress the whole way from me signing the agreement with them, to acquiring a shipping company, and all the way through to the drop off. There was an issue with the car not being able to make it onto the trailer when the driver showed up, but they worked hard on my behalf to convince the driver that we had made the necessary repairs and the car would be able to make it up into his trailer. To their credit and his, he came back and picked up the car and made the delivery as promised. The driver was even ahead of the estimated delivery time. Very professional driver and company. I would HIGHLY recommend Sherpa Auto Transport to anyone that’s needs a vehicle shipped to Denver!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I chose to go with Sherpa to transport a Subaru Outback, and it only took a couple of days, which was sooner than I anticipated. My son was there for pickup, and he was pleased with the driver. I was there at drop-off and I was so impressed with him and how hard he worked moving the cars around on the thing. He doesn’t have an easy job and his level of professionalism was exemplary. Sherpa was spot on with the quote as well. I don’t know why Sherpa is not number one, but they probably soon will be because they really did a great job in Denver.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“We contracted with Sherpa to arrange transport of an automobile we purchased from our daughter and son-in-law in Connecticut to our home near Boulder, Colorado. Sherpa notified us that it had found a transporter, that the price would be about $200 higher than its estimate, and that Sherpa would cover the difference–so we paid exactly what Sherpa had promised. They were good in communicating each step of the process.”

Factors that affect Denver Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location
Pickup Window
Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Denver. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but Denver’s central location can be advantageous for cross-country routes.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Denver. Enclosed trailers, while about 50% more expensive and potentially slower, offer protection from Colorado’s varied weather conditions for high-value vehicles.
  • Location Accessibility: Denver’s well-connected network of interstates (I-25, I-70, I-76) makes it easier and more affordable for car shipping. Rural areas outside the city may incur additional costs.
  • Seasonal Factors: Denver’s weather can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow may cause delays or require special handling, while summer is typically busier and more expensive for auto transport.
  • Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or inoperable vehicles cost more to ship. Denver’s high altitude may affect some vehicles, so ensure your car is in good condition for transport.
  • Timing and Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can reduce costs when shipping a car to or from Denver. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will increase the price.

Understanding these factors can help you manage your auto transport costs effectively. For a more detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. If you’re considering enclosed transport for your vehicle, learn more about the differences between open vs. enclosed car shipping.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Denver car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling vehicles from the Mile High City.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-25 or I-70. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of more cost-effective auto transport options to or from Denver.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Denver’s weather can impact car shipping costs. Summer months often see increased demand, while winter weather may affect routes. Plan accordingly to potentially save on your auto transport.

When planning car shipping to or from Denver, CO, it’s crucial to understand local regulations and prepare for your move. Denver’s unique climate and transportation system require special consideration for auto transport and relocation.

For vehicle requirements, Colorado mandates emissions testing for most vehicles in the Denver metro area. If you’re moving to Denver, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 90 days. The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles handles registrations, and you can often complete the process online.

Denver utilizes the ExpressToll system for its highways. If you’re using car shipping services to Denver, remember to remove your current toll transponder to avoid unnecessary charges. You can sign up for an ExpressToll account once you arrive.

When settling in Denver, set up utilities through Xcel Energy for electricity and Denver Water for water services. For internet, major providers include Comcast, CenturyLink, and Google Fiber. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and explore Denver Public Library for free library cards.

If you’re leaving Denver, remember to cancel local memberships and forward your mail through USPS. When using a car transport company, consider Denver’s weather. Snowfall can affect car shipping schedules, especially during winter months.

Denver’s high altitude and dry climate can impact vehicles. When shipping a car to Denver, be prepared to adjust to the elevation. Your vehicle may need a tune-up to perform optimally in the Mile High City.

Denver, Colorado Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Denver?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Denver. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Denver?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Denver?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Denver?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“Upfront guaranteed delivery. Great communication. Guaranteed pickup in 4 day pickup window. Here is why you should go with Sherpa. My vehicle was picked up on a Tuesday in North Carolina and delivered at my driveway on Thursday to Colorado. 1700 miles in two days, no issues with the vehicle at all. (High Line Transport) was the driver. He kept great communication from pickup to dropoff. Sherpa made me feel comfortable explaining the process in detail, I why I should go with them instead of the other companies. I am glad I listened. Saved a lot of trouble vetting other companies.”

“I used Sherpa to transport a 2016 Chevy Equinox from Colorado to New York. The entire process went extremely well. Sherpa gave me complete information on how to prep the car for transport, and the company that actually moved the vehicle (UZ Auto Trans – selected by Sherpa) did an excellent job. Everyone I dealt with. from Kendra at Sherpa to the drivers at UZ, were friendly and professional. The car arrived in perfect condition and much earlier than estimated. The next time i need an auto transport, I`ll return here.”

“I was very pleased with Sherpa Auto Transport services for my son`s car from Houston to Denver. The customer service rep was professional and answered all of my questions. The price was competitive to other carriers. The car was picked up within the window provided and delivered the next day. My son took pictures of the car prior to pick up and the driver took lots of pictures also. The driver called when he was within 2 hours of delivery and again when he was 15 minutes out. We picked up the car at a facility 2 miles away from our home. No damage to the car. I would use Sherpa again.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Car was picked up and delivered exactly within timeframe Sherpa provided. All the way from Connecticut to Denver. People were nice and responsive when I called. You do have to take a leap of faith with all these type of brokers, because pick up often does go right up to the wire. However, Sherpa did use their “sweeten the pot” contribution (a portion of their $300 fee) of 75$ to get an auto transport commitment. This whole process is not very high tech, but it does work well. I did call around and everyone seemed competitive within a couple of hundred dollars. This was the first time I ever shipped a car, and if I ever have to do this again, there`s no reason to go anywhere else. I know some people claim they had issues, but I`m willing to bet that those are anomalies. Nothing is ever 100% but as far as my experience, I`m 100% satisfied with their service.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Denver, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Colorado. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
