- Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
- Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
- Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Colorado customers say about Sherpa:
“The two people that came to get the car were very professional and knowledgeable as well. The truck was very clean, and it did not seem like it was old. It was very new. I have seen these things on the road and some of them don`t look as safe as the others. Sherpa`s was a very well-maintained vehicle where they transported my car. From San Francisco, California to Colorado, it only took 24 hours. I was shocked!”
“My experience with Sherpa was great. Really great reservation system and fantastic customer support and communication along the way. Sherpa and all of its competitors are essentially brokers. They`re going to use their network to find a third party to ship your vehicle. So you should know that in advance. It`s hard to blame any broker for poor delivery service…but you should trust that they would make thing right should anything go wrong. Fortunately, I didn`t have to worry about any of that. My third party hauler was great. They communicated wonderfully and got my vehicle from Colorado to Chicago in less than 48 hours from pickup.”
“We contracted with Sherpa to arrange transport of an automobile we purchased from our daughter and son-in-law in Connecticut to our home near Boulder, Colorado. Sherpa notified us that it had found a transporter, that the price would be about $200 higher than its estimate, and that Sherpa would cover the difference–so we paid exactly what Sherpa had promised. They were good in communicating each step of the process.”

Factors that affect Colorado Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Colorado’s central location affects shipping costs. Transporting a car to/from coastal states like California or New York will be pricier than shipping to neighboring states like Kansas or Utah. The vast distances and varied terrain in Colorado can also impact prices.
- Route: Major interstates like I-25, I-70, and I-76 make car shipping more efficient and cost-effective. Shipping to Denver or Colorado Springs is typically cheaper than to mountain towns like Aspen or Telluride due to easier access.
- Season: Colorado’s weather can affect car shipping prices. Winter storms in the Rocky Mountains may cause delays or require specialized equipment, potentially increasing costs. Summer is peak season for auto transport, which can also drive up prices.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle impact shipping costs. A compact car will be cheaper to ship than an SUV or truck. High-clearance vehicles common in Colorado, like 4x4s, may have different pricing considerations.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical and widely used option for car shipping to/from Colorado. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers additional protection for luxury or classic cars against Colorado’s varied weather conditions.
- Timing: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to better rates. Rush or guaranteed delivery services will increase the cost of your Colorado car shipment.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your Colorado car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Colorado car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open carriers are more cost-effective and provide greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates when shipping a car to or from Colorado.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-25 or I-70. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during auto transport.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to access more competitive pricing options for your Colorado car shipping needs.
- Consider seasonal timing: Colorado’s weather can impact transport costs. Summer months often offer more favorable rates due to easier road conditions.
- Opt for terminal-to-door or door-to-terminal: While not as convenient as door-to-door, these options can reduce costs for your Colorado auto transport.

How does Colorado Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from Colorado requires careful planning, especially considering the state’s unique geography and climate. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth auto transport experience:
- Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you an idea of the cost based on factors like your vehicle type, pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
- Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car transport service. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa Auto Transport.
- Prepare your vehicle: Given Colorado’s varied terrain and weather conditions, it’s crucial to properly prepare your car for shipping. Wash and inspect your vehicle, remove personal items, and ensure it’s in good working condition. If shipping during winter, consider winterizing your vehicle.
- Choose the right transport method: Colorado’s climate can be unpredictable, with snow possible even in summer at higher elevations. Enclosed transport might be preferable for added protection, especially for luxury or classic cars.
- Plan for potential route challenges: Colorado’s mountainous terrain, particularly along I-70, can impact shipping times. Be prepared for possible delays during winter months when mountain passes may close.
- Meet the carrier: When your carrier arrives, conduct a thorough inspection of your vehicle and hand over the keys.
- Track your shipment: Stay informed about your vehicle’s progress as it traverses Colorado’s scenic highways.
- Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car again and pay any remaining balance.
By following these steps and working with a reliable Colorado car shipping company, you can ensure your vehicle arrives safely at its destination, whether you’re moving to the bustling Front Range or the serene Western Slope. Remember, proper planning is key to a successful auto transport experience in the Centennial State.
Colorado Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Colorado or moving within the state, there are several important factors to consider. Colorado’s unique climate and regulations require special attention for a smooth transition.
First, let’s address vehicle-specific requirements. Colorado uses the ExpressToll system for its toll roads. If you’re moving away, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to Colorado, you can easily sign up for an ExpressToll account online. Vehicle registration in Colorado must be completed within 90 days of establishing residency. The process involves providing proof of insurance, a valid ID, and passing an emissions test in certain counties.
Colorado’s weather can be unpredictable, with harsh winters in many areas. When using car shipping services, ensure your vehicle is prepared for the climate. This might include switching to all-season or winter tires and checking your antifreeze levels.
For those moving to Colorado, here are some essential steps:
- Set up utilities: Major providers include Xcel Energy for electricity and Denver Water for water services in the Denver area. Research local providers for your specific location.
- Internet services: Comcast, CenturyLink, and Google Fiber are available in many areas.
- Register to vote: You can do this when obtaining your Colorado driver’s license or online through the Secretary of State’s website.
- School enrollment: Contact your local school district for registration requirements.
- Library cards: Most libraries offer free cards to residents. Check your local library’s website for details.
If you’re moving from Colorado, don’t forget to:
- Cancel local memberships (gym, clubs, etc.)
- Set up mail forwarding with USPS
- Notify your current utility providers of your move
Whether you’re using auto transport services to move to or from Colorado, understanding these local nuances will help ensure a smooth transition. Remember, Colorado’s high altitude and variable weather can affect vehicles, so proper preparation is key when shipping a car to this beautiful state.
Colorado Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Colorado?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Colorado. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Colorado?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Colorado?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Colorado?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

For example, at the University of Colorado Boulder, students must register their vehicles and obtain a permit to park on campus. Similarly, Colorado State University in Fort Collins offers various parking options, including residential and commuter passes.
Many off-campus apartments near Colorado universities provide parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For on-campus housing, parking availability varies by institution. Students should check with their specific school for details.

- Plan for winter storage: Many campuses offer long-term parking options during breaks.

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Colorado
Colorado is home to several military installations, making it a hub for service members and their families. Fort Carson, located near Colorado Springs, is the largest Army base in the state. Peterson Space Force Base and Schriever Space Force Base are also situated in Colorado Springs, serving as crucial centers for the newly formed Space Force. These bases provide on-site parking for personnel, but it’s advisable to check specific regulations upon arrival.

Sherpa Auto Transport offers specialized car shipping services to military personnel and provides a $50 military discount as a token of appreciation for their service.

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Colorado customers:

They were good in communicating each step of the process.”
“Upfront guaranteed delivery. Great communication. Guaranteed pickup in 4 day pickup window. Here is why you should go with Sherpa. My vehicle was picked up on a Tuesday in North Carolina and delivered at my driveway on Thursday to Colorado. 1700 miles in two days, no issues with the vehicle at all. (High Line Transport) was the driver. He kept great communication from pickup to dropoff. Sherpa made me feel comfortable explaining the process in detail, I why I should go with them instead of the other companies. I am glad I listened. Saved a lot of trouble vetting other companies.”
“I was looking through Consumer Reports` reviews and saw that Sherpa was the number two carrier in the nation. Instead of going with the number one company, I went with the number two because I figured they work harder at trying to become number one than the number one company already has. I chose to go with Sherpa to transport a Subaru Outback, and it only took a couple of days, which was sooner than I anticipated. My son was there for pickup, and he was pleased with the driver. I was there at drop-off and I was so impressed with him and how hard he worked moving the cars around on the thing. He doesn`t have an easy job and his level of professionalism was exemplary. Sherpa was spot on with the quote as well. In fact, they said if I would send their company a copy of the manifest they got and a copy of the final thing that I got, within two weeks, they would refund $100 to my credit card. However, I was so impressed with the job they did and how hard they worked that I didn`t even bother with that and just let them keep it. I don`t know why Sherpa is not number one, but they probably soon will be because they really did a great job.”
“I shopped around even signed a contract with an unreliable company. They were baiting and switching me. Lied about the amount so I’d go with them. My car was never picked up and I’m disputing the charge on my CC. So I was worried about signing again with another company. I reluctantly tried Sherpa and everything they said happened. My car even arrived on time. I had lost a few days for pickup with the other company. Thinking oh my car will be delivered a few days later. We landed in Florida and the driver delivered my car at 10:00 PM that night. I even got a $100 rebate back!! I will definitely use them to transport vehicle back.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Colorado, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Colorado. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
