Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all of shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our California and Florida customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Top Line Auto Service based out of California dropped the car off. The two brothers met me. I had spoken to Joseph on the phone, and figured out what direction they were coming from, which was east from Florida. And based on where I live, I gave them the best place that I thought would be the easiest to pull up an 18-wheeler, and with a truckload of cars, to offload it and meet them to where they could easily get back on the interstate again and go about their day without having to snake through city traffic.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“We relocated from the West Coast to the East Coast with two vehicles, so we needed to use a transport service. Sherpa transported one from Mountain View, California to Boston and the second one was from Salt Lake City to Green Bay, Wisconsin. We were supposed to drive across the country, but our trip was interrupted by a death in the family. Sherpa arranged the transport in 24 hours and picked the car up in Salt Lake City at the hotel.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I had used Sherpa before. They were not the least expensive but they were reliable which is more important. I had a very bad experience many years ago and reliability is my most important criterion. United was the transport company at that time and they had driven my car. They delivered my car with not even enough gas to get to a gas station. It had 500 extra miles on it before, which was a lot of mileage. United offered me 31 cents a mile for the usage. The problem is there are no laws that govern this industry. Once you hand your car over, the company can literally do whatever they want with it. I paid a lot of money to have my car transported from California to DC.”

Note: These figures are based on Sherpa’s actual data from the past 12 months of vehicle shipments from California to Florida. When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.

Factors that affect California to Florida Car Shipping Prices

  • Distance: The journey from California to Florida spans approximately 2,500 to 3,000 miles, depending on the specific cities involved. This considerable distance is a primary factor in determining car shipping costs. For instance, transporting a vehicle from Los Angeles to Miami will typically be more expensive than from San Diego to Jacksonville due to the longer route.
  • Seasonal Demand: California to Florida auto transport experiences seasonal fluctuations. Winter months see increased demand as ‘snowbirds’ move south, potentially raising prices. Conversely, spring and early summer may offer more competitive rates as people return north. Additionally, holiday periods like Christmas and New Year can impact car shipping costs due to higher demand.
  • Geographic Considerations: California’s diverse terrain, including mountains and deserts, can affect transport routes and timelines. Florida’s peninsula shape means most shipments must travel through other states, potentially influencing costs. Both states’ extensive coastlines offer multiple port options for those considering partial sea transport, which might impact pricing.
  • Regulatory Factors: California’s strict emissions standards may affect certain types of transport vehicles, potentially impacting costs. Florida’s frequent severe weather events, such as hurricanes, can lead to temporary route changes or delays, affecting pricing during specific seasons.
  • Population Density: California and Florida both have densely populated urban areas and expansive rural regions. Shipping to or from major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, or Orlando is often more cost-effective due to established transport routes. Rural locations may incur additional fees due to limited accessibility.
  • Vehicle Type: The size, weight, and value of your vehicle play a crucial role in determining California to Florida car shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks generally cost more to transport than compact cars.
  • Transport Method: Open-air transport is typically more affordable for California to Florida auto transport, while enclosed shipping offers added protection at a higher cost. The choice between these options can significantly impact the final price.

Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Best times to ship: Book your California to Florida car shipping in the fall or spring. These off-peak seasons often offer lower rates and more flexible schedules.
  • Leverage popular hubs: Consider pickup or delivery near major cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Houston, or Jacksonville. These transport hubs may offer better rates due to high volume.
  • Weather considerations: Avoid shipping during hurricane season (June to November) in Florida, as it may increase costs due to potential delays or rerouting.
  • California regulations: Be aware of California’s strict emissions standards. Ensure your vehicle complies to avoid any last-minute issues or additional fees.
  • Flexible locations: Opting for terminal-to-terminal shipping instead of door-to-door can significantly reduce costs. Consider dropping off or picking up your vehicle at nearby terminals.
  • Timing matters: Book your auto transport at least two weeks in advance to secure better rates and ensure availability.
  • Compare quotes: Get multiple quotes from reputable car shipping companies to find the best deal for your California to Florida route.
  • Vehicle preparation: Properly prepare your car for shipping by removing personal items and ensuring it’s in good working condition. This can prevent additional charges or delays.
  • Consider open transport: If your vehicle isn’t high-value or classic, choose open transport over enclosed to save money on your car shipping.
  • Be flexible with dates: Allow for a pickup window rather than a specific date to potentially secure lower rates on your auto transport.

How does Car Shipping from California to Florida Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Car shipping from California to Florida is a popular interstate route for auto transport companies like Sherpa Auto Transport. The process involves several key steps to safely move vehicles across the country. First, customers request a quote online or by phone, providing details about their vehicle and desired pickup and delivery locations in California and Florida. Once booked, a carrier is assigned to transport the car.

For California to Florida car shipping, there are some unique considerations. The long distance (approximately 2,500-3,000 miles) means the journey typically takes 7-10 days. Weather variations between the two states can impact transport times, especially during hurricane season in Florida. Carriers often use major interstates like I-10 or I-40 for this route.

The steps involved in shipping a car from California to Florida include:

  • Booking the shipment and choosing between open or enclosed transport
  • Preparing the vehicle for shipping (cleaning, removing personal items)
  • Vehicle inspection and documentation at pickup
  • Transport across multiple states
  • Delivery and final inspection in Florida

The typical timeline for California to Florida auto transport is influenced by factors such as exact pickup and delivery locations, time of year, and chosen service level. Express or expedited shipping options can reduce transit times but may cost more. It’s advisable to book your car shipping at least 2-3 weeks in advance to ensure availability and potentially lower rates.

By understanding the car shipping process for this specific route, customers can better prepare for their vehicle’s journey from the West Coast to the Sunshine State. Sherpa Auto Transport’s expertise in long-distance auto shipping ensures a smooth and reliable experience for this popular interstate transport.

California to Florida Car Transport: State Insights and Regulations

When shipping a car from California to Florida, there are several important factors to consider. Vehicle registration processes differ between these states, which can impact your move. California requires smog checks for most vehicles, while Florida does not. However, Florida mandates that new residents register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency.

California has strict emissions standards, which may affect car shipping options. Some older or modified vehicles might not meet Florida’s requirements, so it’s crucial to check beforehand. Florida, on the other hand, has fewer restrictions on vehicle modifications, which could be beneficial for car enthusiasts.

For those planning a California to Florida car shipping journey, consider these tips: First, thoroughly clean your vehicle before transport to avoid any issues at inspection points. Second, remove all personal items from the car, as most auto transport companies prohibit this for insurance reasons. Lastly, document your vehicle’s condition with photos before shipping to protect yourself in case of damage.

Interstate agreements play a role in car shipping from California to Florida. Both states are members of the Driver License Compact, which means traffic violations in one state can affect your driving record in the other. Additionally, the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) helps both states share vehicle registration information, potentially streamlining the process for new residents.

When choosing an auto transport company for your California to Florida car shipping needs, look for providers experienced with this specific route. They’ll be familiar with any unique challenges or requirements. Remember that shipping times can vary depending on the season, with winter months often seeing increased demand due to snowbirds heading south.

By understanding these regulations and considerations, you can ensure a smooth car shipping experience from California to Florida. Always consult with local DMVs and reputable auto transport companies for the most up-to-date information on interstate vehicle transportation.

California to Florida Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to Florida from California?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details about how to prepare your vehicle to Florida from California. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to Florida from California?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from California?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Florida?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

“Our daughter was moving from Florida to California for a transfer with her job and she needed to ship a 2010 Toyota RAV4. She looked at a few transport companies online and contacted one company. They took a deposit and sent the contract. But we didn’t like the terms of their contract at all and they didn’t have a very good rating on the Better Business Bureau. Then, we found Sherpa and we went with them. We’re very happy with our experience from start to finish. Their name is very cool and certainly good marketing on their part because it’s easy to remember. The customer service rep we had answered very quickly and explained the whole process. He told us a little bit about how the industry works and a little bit about how we don’t pay a deposit until we see the contract. The contract was just attached to the quote so we could take a look at the whole thing and see what we were getting into. Then we called back and told them to go ahead and look for a driver for us. It was a very easy transaction and their people were very good to talk to. They didn’t pester us, they told us what we needed to know, and were very professional. The cost was slightly higher but we liked their betting process. We felt like we were probably going to get a better-quality driver with valid insurance so to us, it was worth a little bit more money. It was certainly something we could live with because we would then have an assurance that we were getting somebody who we really wanted to trust our car to. And the terms of the contract were quite reasonable, especially compared to the other one we looked at before.”

“I was moving across the country from California to Virginia and I needed a transport service. After looking at 15 different transport companies, I chose Sherpa Auto Transport because of the way they broker people. I asked them a couple of quality management questions and they answered these well. I asked them how they got their subcontractors so I would know that my car would be safe. They were good and the way they answered my questions made me feel comfortable. The rep`s knowledge and expertise on the service they offered were very good and these were enough for me to wanna pay $1300 for the service. Sherpa was $200 more expensive than other transport companies, but they told me how the process works when they bid, so I understood a lot of things that made me be okay with their price. The driver who picked up my car and the one who delivered it were nice. I got multiple calls from them and their time estimation for arrival was accurate. I was assuming that the driver would drop my car off in front of my house, but I learned that was not so when I asked why the day of the pickup was a day before, making sure I would be in a certain spot at the time. I didn’t know beforehand what to expect and that on the tail-end I would have to go to a supermarket or an open sale, but once again they explained the reason to me and now I understand what was going on. But they could have communicated that to me in the beginning so I would have known more on what to expect. The driver picked my car up on Wednesday afternoon and I got it on Monday by lunchtime. I thought the transport was gonna take at least a week, or at least till the next weekend, and I didn’t know that I`d have a car by the time I started work on Monday.”

“I`ve used another transport service a couple of years ago and then, I saw Sherpa had the best website out of all of them and I liked it. I would put my information on a site and then, all of sudden, I`d get 70 calls from different contractors. With Sherpa, I really liked that there is just one middleman that took care of all of that. Tim was awesome, the sweetest and the most helpful. He was kind, answered all my questions and took his time explaining everything. Also, I looked at all the reviews, and they were good. The quote was awesome and you don`t have to bargain since they had a flat rate. You don`t have to talk to people back and forth like in the company that I used in the past. When a person arrives, it was very cut and dry. For a company like Sherpa, I would almost expect it to be more expensive but I was happy to find that it was just around the amount that I paid before, but it wasn`t the extra haggle and the extra trouble. So, I was really satisfied with the whole thing. The people were professional and very communicative. A day before, they let me know exactly where the driver was and around what time he would come in. And if that was going to change, they said that they would notify me right away. The guy who delivered my car was sweet and he was a really nice guy. I had my car delivered before when I lived in the hills. And since I didn`t have a car, I had to Uber down to where the driver was because he couldn`t drive up in the hills. But with this delivery, it was just my car on his truck as opposed to the bay truck. It took a week for the transport and the timeframe was perfect because that was how I planned out my trip to get there at a certain time. I was able to borrow a car until it arrived and it got there exactly around the time that the company said that it would. My car was dirtier than I imagined when it arrived but it`s fine. There was no harm done and it was great. I`m glad that I chose Sherpa when I moved cross-country to get my car from Maryland to California and I`ll use them again. It’s the best company that I`ve ever, ever used and their quality is really wonderful. The price is also perfect so I would recommend them.”

“My daughter was moving from New Jersey to California. We had to use Sherpa, and it was an amazing experience. The last time she moved from Texas to New Jersey, we used a different transport and it was a nightmare. Her car got damaged and it was just off. They weren`t there when they said they were gonna be there. But as far as Sherpa, when they said they were gonna be there, they were there. They picked up the car when they said they would. They dropped it off when they said they would. The car was in the same condition that it left. Nothing happened to it. I would definitely use Sherpa again. If I decide to move across the country to California to be near my daughter, I would use Sherpa to transport my car. When my daughter moved a couple years ago, we looked through a lot of different transport companies. We remember Sherpa`s having such a great rating, and so my daughter really investigated all their companies. She said, “If they can find a driver, I definitely wanna use Sherpa.” The price was reasonable too. Another place she wanted to use was $2,500. They said it`s gonna cost this amount of dollars to ship the car, and that was exactly what it cost to ship the car, which is the way it should always be. It wasn`t more or less. So, between the price and the quality of the service, we were very pleased. The customer service at Sherpa always returned our phone calls promptly. In fact, they gave us a certain amount of time that it would take to retain a driver. It was two days later or the next day, and we had a driver that was gonna take her car out to California. It was quicker than we thought it would be. He also dropped it off. The last time we did the transport, when they brought it back to New Jersey, they refused to come into my neighborhood, which does have a wide street. She had to meet the driver somewhere. Here with Sherpa, they came in right in front of my house and picked up the car. When my daughter was out in California, she said they came right in front of her apartment and dropped off the car. The car was in the same condition it left. There was white on it because apparently, he went through a snow storm. Sherpa was reliable. They were nice and friendly and helpful.”

“We purchased a vehicle in Florida and needed it transferred to California. I called a couple of companies and Sherpa had the better price. They had some good reviews too. I spoke with their guy to set up the transport. I had to change dates because the paperwork didn’t go through and they changed it for me. It was an easy setup. From the day the vehicle was picked it up to drop-off, that was seven days. The driver was a really good guy. I had his number and the truck had LoJack on it so I could keep track of the vehicle. It was fun. The app would tell you if your car exceeds the maximum limit and I kept getting these notifications. You could see he was on the interstate highway and cruising along. He never exceeded the limit by that much. The driver picked up three cars in Florida and they all got dropped off in California. We were the first drop-off. When he got to New Mexico, I thought we were gonna get the car in three days. But he stayed in New Mexico for two days. On the whole, he got the vehicle to us within the timeframe told to us, which was six or seven days. The delivery was done at night. The driver was busting his butt to get here for us. We live in a rural community in the mountains and the roads are a little curvy and narrow. I was a little worried for him. He called me as he had no way of telling how far he was out because it was not freeways. It was 9:30 and he wanted to know if that was okay. We went down to the gas station and met him there. He unloaded the vehicle and we looked at it. We gave him a good tip and he was super friendly. I was very worried because he was going down through a canyon that is narrow and curvy, and that was very difficult for larger vehicles. He was pulling a really long trailer. But he did it. I texted him the next morning and he said he made it.”
