What our San Mateo customers say about Sherpa:
“I called Sherpa because they had such a high review. They arranged the transport on the same day on an emergency basis, got a driver, and picked the car up and took it to Boston. That bailed us out of a bad situation and it went well. They kept us informed. We couldn’t even get the other company to answer the phone, but Sherpa always answered the phone and they always knew where the car was and gave us updates.”
“I used Sherpa’s services again this time and everything went well. DC did not allow them to enter the city with their trucks so they really worked with me in finding a place where I could make the exchange and that was convenient for me. Their people were very nice. They insisted on making sure that I wrote the mileage down. Even though I knew that didn’t really matter, at least they were very diligent.”
“After retrieving a quote for nearly every company in the article, I instantly put Sherpa at the top of my list because of their promised flat-rate policy. If you have experience shipping a car, you know how great this is. Shortly after, I received a phone call from a very lovely worker who offered me a much appreciated rebate if I chose to go with them instead of other companies I was considering at the time.”

Factors that affect San Mateo Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The journey length significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from San Mateo, CA. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but per-mile rates often decrease for longer trips.
- Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport. They’re suitable for most vehicles shipping to or from San Mateo. Enclosed carriers offer extra protection but cost about 50% more and may have longer delivery times.
- Location Accessibility: San Mateo’s proximity to major highways like US-101 and I-280 can help reduce costs. Urban areas are typically cheaper for pickup and delivery compared to rural locations.
- Seasonal Factors: San Mateo’s mild climate means fewer weather-related challenges for car shipping. However, summer months and January tend to see higher prices due to increased demand.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Inoperable cars require special equipment, increasing the price. Ensure your vehicle is in running condition to keep costs down.
- Flexibility: A wider pickup window (e.g., five business days) often results in lower costs for car shipping to or from San Mateo. Rush or guaranteed pickup services will increase the price.
- Route Popularity: San Mateo’s location in the San Francisco Bay Area means it’s on many popular auto transport routes, potentially lowering costs due to high carrier availability.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping a car to or from San Mateo, CA. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your San Mateo car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Consider pickup/dropoff locations: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways like US-101 or I-280. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues. Car shipping companies aren’t responsible for items left in the vehicle.
- Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates to increase your options. Consider alternative locations in the San Mateo area, such as nearby cities like Redwood City or San Carlos, which may offer more cost-effective routes.
- Utilize Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise: While it’s tempting to shop around, remember that Sherpa Auto Transport provides realistic quotes upfront. Our Price Lock Promise ensures you won’t pay more than the quoted price, giving you peace of mind and potentially saving you money in the long run.

San Mateo, California Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from San Mateo?

In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from San Mateo?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from San Mateo?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to San Mateo?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Reviews from our California Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied California customers:
“Sherpa had a good rating on Better Business Bureau and it said that Sherpa was a bit more expensive than some of the other ones, but they had a guarantee to get your car moved in the appropriate time frame. I realized that in that industry, they give you a date but it would float a couple of days here or there. So, it`s not definitive because they are just an agent. They`re not actually moving the car. I was always moving out of state, so I wanted to make sure that I had that whole week. I would still be up in New York. So, I decided to call them and get a quote. I had some lowball quotes, but most of them were at 700, 800. The rep gave me a quote of 1,900 and I said to him, “Look, don`t you guys have some more guarantees than the other companies?” But $1,900, that`s more than double. He ended up inputting the wrong destination. He put it in California rather than North Carolina. So, he went back to check it, and then he said, “Oh, wait a minute. I screwed up. Hold on one second.” He then did it. They were a bit more expensive, but I wanted my car to get down there. I was moving to North Carolina and they`re based out of Charlotte.”
“My fiancée is a wizard when it comes to doing her due diligence and finding the best companies and reading reviews. I asked her to pull her magic and let me know what she thought, and Sherpa was in the top five transport companies and were actually the first ones to answer the phone or respond to my call. Joseph was the gentleman that I talked to. He was very professional and friendly. He made me feel very comfortable with using the company to broker the deal for me. Top Line Auto Service based out of California dropped the car off. The two brothers met me. I had spoken to Joseph on the phone, and figured out what direction they were coming from, which was east from Florida. And based on where I live, I gave them the best place that I thought would be the easiest to pull up an 18-wheeler, and with a truckload of cars, to offload it and meet them to where they could easily get back on the interstate again and go about their day without having to snake through city traffic.”
“A couple years ago, my wife and I started living in two locations on two coasts. So, we split our time since we`re both retired both in Massachusetts and California. So, we had access to a car while we were here in California. Over the first few years, that car died after a long life. To give us greater flexibility, we decided to ship one of our two cars from Massachusetts to California for our flexibility here. All three estimates that I got were reasonably close to each other. I kicked the highest one out. I viewed this as transactions as long as they were rated reasonably well by previous users of the services. So, it narrowed down to Sherpa. At the end of the day, it turned out really silly. But it was the free car wash at the end.”
“Our daughter was moving from Florida to California, and we needed to ship a 2010 Toyota RAV4. She looked at a few transport companies online and contacted one company. They took a deposit and sent the contract. But we didn’t like the terms of their contract at all and they didn’t have a very good rating on the Better Business Bureau. Then, we found Sherpa and we went with them. We’re very happy with our experience from start to finish. Their name is very cool and certainly good marketing on their part because it’s easy to remember. The customer service rep we had answered very quickly and explained the whole process. She told us a little bit about how the industry works and a little bit about how we don’t pay a deposit until we see the contract.”
“I`ve used another transport service a couple of years ago and then, I saw Sherpa had the best website out of all of them and I liked it. I would put my information on a site and then, all of sudden, I`d get 70 calls from different contractors. With Sherpa, I really liked that there is just one middleman that took care of all of that. Tim was awesome, the sweetest and the most helpful. He was kind, answered all my questions and took his time explaining everything. Also, I looked at all the reviews, and they were good. The quote was awesome and you don`t have to bargain since they had a flat rate. You don`t have to talk to people back and forth like in the company that I used in the past. When a person arrives, it was very cut and dry. For a company like Sherpa, I would almost expect it to be more expensive but I was happy to find that it was just around the amount that I paid before, but it wasn`t the extra haggle and the extra trouble. So, I was really satisfied with the whole thing. The people were professional and very communicative. A day before, they let me know exactly where the driver was and around what time he would come in. And if that was going to change, they said that they would notify me right away. The guy who delivered my car was sweet and he was a really nice guy. I had my car delivered before when I lived in the hills. And since I didn`t have a car, I had to Uber down to where the driver was because he couldn`t drive up in the hills. But with this delivery, it was just my car on his truck as opposed to the bay truck. It took a week for the transport and the timeframe was perfect because that was how I planned out my trip to get there at a certain time. I was able to borrow a car until it arrived and it got there exactly around the time that the company said that it would. My car was dirtier than I imagined when it arrived but it`s fine. There was no harm done and it was great. I`m glad that I chose Sherpa when I moved cross-country to get my car from Maryland to California and I`ll use them again. It’s the best company that I`ve ever, ever used and their quality is really wonderful. The price is also perfect so I would recommend them.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in San Mateo, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of California. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

- Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
- The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
- Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
- Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel.
