Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our San Diego customers say about Sherpa:

Yelp
★★★★★

“We had two cars to transport from south florida to San Diego. Our sons are both marines newly stationed in CA and they needed their cars. The experience with the transporter was incredible. The dispatcher called me a few days early and communicated with me the name of river and time window. Then the actual driver called me. He was an Angel! He was so kind and friendly. His truck was top notch and IMMACULATE! I knew the cars would be safe.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I stumbled upon Sherpa reviews here, which made me more comfortable and confident to call, needing my car shipped from San Diego to Florida. Customer service was excellent with my first call, explained how transport works, they aren’t like the companies that have hundreds of random people calling, texting, and emailing, asked for a window date I needed my car picked up, and got a quote done. I felt great after the call.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I needed to get my daughter’s mini cooper back from university since she’s home for the summer and would be transferring. I’ve looked at one or 2 other companies and everybody’s about the same price, anywhere from $900 to $1,100 for that coast to coast transfer. This time, Sherpa did a good contact and they turned everything around right away. So, I got them to do the auto transport from San Diego to Annapolis, Maryland.”

Factors that affect San Diego Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The distance between San Diego and the destination significantly affects car shipping costs. Longer routes, such as cross-country shipments, will naturally be more expensive than shorter distances within California or neighboring states.
  • Transport Type: Open transport is the most common and cost-effective option for shipping cars to or from San Diego. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection from San Diego’s mild climate and occasional marine layer, is typically 50% more expensive and may have longer wait times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks will cost more to ship than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the carrier. This is particularly relevant when shipping to San Diego’s urban areas where space might be at a premium.
  • Route Popularity: San Diego’s location along major highways like I-5 and I-8 can affect pricing. Popular routes to and from San Diego may offer more competitive rates due to higher carrier availability.
  • Seasonal Demand: Auto transport to San Diego may see price fluctuations during peak seasons. Summer months and January typically have higher demand, potentially increasing costs for car shipping services.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Terminal-to-terminal shipping in San Diego is often cheaper than door-to-door service. However, San Diego’s well-connected road network makes door-to-door delivery a convenient option for many customers.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading and unloading. Ensure your car is in running condition to avoid additional fees when shipping to or from San Diego.

Understanding these factors can help you better estimate the cost of shipping your car to or from San Diego. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your San Diego car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping to get the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-5 or I-8. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall auto transport expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offer a range of pickup and delivery dates. This flexibility can help you secure better rates for your San Diego car transport needs.
  • Consider seasonality: Auto transport to and from San Diego may be cheaper during off-peak seasons. Discuss timing with your Sherpa advisor to find the most cost-effective options.
  • Utilize Sherpa’s Price Lock Promise: Take advantage of our guaranteed pricing, ensuring you won’t pay more than the quoted amount for your car shipping services.

Navigating the car shipping process in San Diego, CA, requires careful planning and consideration of the city’s unique characteristics. To ensure a smooth auto transport experience, follow these steps:

  • Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free quote from a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. Provide details about your vehicle, preferred shipping method, and desired timeframe.
  • Book your shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your car transport reservation. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Before shipping your car, wash it thoroughly and document any existing damage. Remove personal items and ensure your gas tank is no more than a quarter full. For detailed instructions, check out our comprehensive guide on how to ship a car.
  • Consider San Diego’s climate: With its mild Mediterranean climate, San Diego rarely experiences extreme weather. However, occasional heat waves can occur, so discuss any weather-related concerns with your auto transport provider.
  • Plan for traffic: San Diego’s major highways, including I-5, I-8, and I-15, can experience heavy traffic. Factor this into your pickup and delivery expectations.
  • Be aware of military presence: San Diego is home to several military bases. If you’re a service member relocating, inform your car shipping company as they may offer special rates or services.
  • Meet the carrier: On pickup day, meet the driver at the agreed location. They’ll perform an inspection and collect the keys.
  • Track your shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, stay informed about its progress through regular updates from your car shipping provider.
  • Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly before signing the final paperwork and paying any remaining balance.

By following these steps and working with a reliable car transport company, you can ensure a hassle-free experience when shipping a car to or from San Diego, CA. Remember to plan ahead and communicate clearly with your chosen provider for the best results.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from San Diego, CA, it’s essential to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. San Diego car shipping can be a smooth process if you’re well-prepared. First, consider removing your FasTrak transponder to avoid unnecessary toll charges on your journey. California requires all vehicles to pass a smog check before registration, so ensure your car is compliant. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles vehicle registration, which must be completed within 20 days of establishing residency.

For those moving to San Diego, you’ll need to set up utilities. San Diego Gas & Electric provides electricity and gas, while the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department manages water services. Popular internet providers include Cox, AT&T, and Spectrum. Don’t forget to register to vote and sign up for a library card at the San Diego Public Library.

If you’re moving away from San Diego, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail through USPS, and notify relevant institutions of your address change. When using car shipping services, inform your auto transport company about any specific requirements or concerns related to San Diego’s unique climate and geography.

San Diego, California Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from San Diego?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from San Diego. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from San Diego?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from San Diego?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to San Diego?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in San Diego

When scheduling car shipping to or from San Diego, CA, it’s crucial to consider the city’s unique climate and seasonal factors. San Diego boasts a mild Mediterranean climate year-round, which is generally favorable for auto transport. However, there are still important considerations to keep in mind:

1. Rain and Fog: While rare, winter months (November to March) can bring occasional rain. This may cause slight delays in car shipping services. Coastal fog, especially in May and June (“May Gray” and “June Gloom”), can also impact visibility for transport trucks.

2. Peak Seasons: Summer (June to August) is the busiest time for San Diego car shipping. Many families move during this period, and tourists flock to the city. To avoid higher rates and potential delays, consider scheduling your auto transport during off-peak months if possible.

3. College Move-In/Out: With several universities in the area, including UCSD and San Diego State, August and May see increased demand for car transport. If you’re a student, try to book your car shipping a few weeks before or after these peak times.

4. Military Considerations: San Diego is home to several military bases. Be aware of potential increased demand for auto transport during common military relocation periods, typically in summer and early fall.

5. Heat Protection: While extreme heat is rare, cars can still get hot inside during transport. Consider using a sunshade for your windshield and removing any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle before shipping your car.

6. Coastal Considerations: If your pick-up or drop-off location is near the coast, inform your car shipping company. Salt air can be corrosive, so they may recommend additional protection for your vehicle during transport.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient experience when shipping a car to or from San Diego. Always communicate with your chosen auto transport provider about any specific concerns or requirements you may have.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in San Diego, California

When considering car shipping to San Diego for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at local universities. At San Diego State University, students need parking permits, which can be purchased online. University of California San Diego offers various parking options, including overnight parking for residents. Most off-campus apartments provide parking, but it’s wise to confirm beforehand. For winter break, many campuses offer long-term parking solutions, but spaces are limited. Remember, San Diego’s mild climate means you won’t need snow tires, but it’s essential to check if your auto transport insurance and roadside assistance coverage extend to your new location. If you’re unsure about shipping a car to San Diego, consider local public transportation options, which are extensive and student-friendly. Lastly, always verify specific parking rules with your chosen institution, as policies may change. Planning ahead ensures a smooth transition when using car shipping services for your college journey in San Diego.

Military Personnel Icon

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I needed to have my automobile transported from San Diego to Florida and was looking at various transport companies. I was initially hesitant to ship my vehicle through a broker, but Sherpa had great reviews and had a price lock guarantee. I took a chance and used Sherpa and had a great experience. My vehicle was picked up within the indicated time frame and without any problems. Sherpa used ** to ship my vehicle to Florida. The vehicle transport driver`s name was (Bruce). He sent me updated texts daily while my vehicle was in transport. Vehicle arrived on time and in the same condition in which it was originally picked up. Bruce from ** was polite, professional and did a great job transporting my vehicle. I would definitely use Sherpa again and would recommend them to others. I also was able to receive my promised $50 rebate from Sherpa the very next day.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“Customer service was good. It was an English speaking person without an accent, so I could understand them, and they provided the information that I needed. I had a Hyundai Kona shipped to my daughter in San Diego, and there was a six-day period that she would be home to accept it. Sherpa assured me they could ship it within that six-day period, but instead, it arrived two days ahead of the six-day period. She was in Paris, France when they called and told her that her car was there and she could pick it up. She had to call her good friend to pick up the check and get her car for her. Besides that, the car was in good condition and the price was in line with the other costs we were quoted. There were a number of companies that called and gave unrealistic low costs which we were sure would be changed at the last minute.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I have never shipped a car before and knew next to nothing about the process. I did some research for some other companies and ultimately landed on Sherpa based on the good reviews and their price lock guarantee. I was really nervous about the shipment, but could not be more pleased with the service. They gave me ALL the information I needed, picked it up on my first available date, and it shipped from Boston to San Diego in less than a week. The pick up and drop off drivers were both so nice and walked me through the bill of lading process. My car arrived in perfect condition (and with everything I packed still in the trunk 🙂 ). I never write reviews, but am so happy with my service and was so nervous about the process that I hope this helps someone looking to ship their car in the US!!”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“When I talked to Sherpa on the phone, they were very clear and specific about everything. They seemed trustworthy. I liked that. I also liked how they covered any other cost. So all I really had to pay them was $300. The quote was very accurate, and the final price was cheaper. The transport took exactly 10 days, which they told me. The first guy who picked up the car was very nice, but he did not speak any English so it was a little confusing to stay in contact with him. But then they ended up switching it off with this other guy, and he was really good at communicating. It was really easy. He dropped off right in front of my place in San Diego. It was good. Overall, they did a really great job.”

Yelp
★★★★★

“I transported my Prius from DC to San Diego. As this is my first time to use an auto transport service I was very leery and called a number of companies. From the Josh M at Sherpa was transparent with the process and was the only carrier who told me outright that the service will not be able to pick up in DC and that the handover was to happen in nearby Virginia. They were able to get a “spot” in Unified Auto Trans Corp and my car was transported without a hitch. Unified Auto Trans Corp was excellent! Sam the driver communicated well and gave important information. He was very thorough with the car inspection. Car arrived as expected.”

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in San Diego, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of California. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

When selecting a car shipping company in San Diego, CA, prioritize reputation and experience. Look for providers with a proven track record of successful auto transports and positive customer reviews. Ensure the company offers adequate insurance coverage and maintains a good safety record with the FMCSA. Consider factors like pricing, service range, and customer support quality.
