What our Los Angeles customers say about Sherpa:
“Also, I was under the impression it would be door-to-door service but it wasn`t. The driver texted me in Los Angeles and said that he couldn`t make it to my neighborhood and that I would have to meet him in Montebello, California. That made me really anxious because I would have to drive a couple of different freeways that I`m not familiar with.”
“They were supposed to pick up on a Monday, and they ended up picking up on a Sunday, but they called ahead of time the day before and let us know. Then, we had to bring the vehicles to a larger intersection because the roads were too windy for the truck to get up. We didn`t know that until they called to say that they couldn`t get up there and asked if we could bring the cars down.”
“We used Sherpa Auto Transport to ship our car from Los Angeles to Austin. We started this online, and the whole process was very smooth and seamless. They were prompt, efficient, and friendly, and the cost to me was very reasonable. We were kept informed throughout the process.”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Los Angeles Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: The length of the journey impacts car shipping costs to and from Los Angeles. Longer distances generally mean higher prices, but LA’s central location on the West Coast can offer competitive rates for many routes.
- Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Los Angeles. Enclosed trailers, while about 50% pricier and potentially slower, offer extra protection for luxury or classic cars against LA’s sunny weather and occasional road debris.
- Location Accessibility: LA’s extensive highway network, including I-5, I-10, and I-405, makes it easier and often cheaper to ship cars to and from the city. However, deliveries to congested downtown areas may incur additional fees.
- Seasonal Demand: Car shipping prices in Los Angeles can fluctuate with the seasons. Summer months and January typically see higher demand and costs, while spring and fall may offer more competitive rates.
- Vehicle Size and Condition: Larger or heavier vehicles cost more to ship. Additionally, inoperable cars require special equipment for loading, increasing the price. Most standard cars and SUVs common in LA traffic fall into regular pricing tiers.
- Timing Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can lead to more competitive prices when shipping a car to or from Los Angeles. Rush or guaranteed delivery dates typically come at a premium.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when arranging car transport to or from Los Angeles. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Los Angeles car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Opt for open car shipping for the lowest rates. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport offers more flexibility and cost-saving opportunities.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Work with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-5, I-10, or I-405. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall price.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates potential liability issues for the auto transport company.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your car transport. Consider adjusting your schedule by a few days to take advantage of more competitive rates.
- Consider seasonal timing: Los Angeles car shipping rates may fluctuate based on seasonal demand. If possible, avoid peak moving seasons like summer for potentially lower prices on auto transport services.

Los Angeles Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When relocating to or from Los Angeles, CA, understanding local vehicle requirements and regulations is crucial for a smooth transition. For those using car shipping services or auto transport, it’s essential to be aware of specific details. Los Angeles utilizes FasTrak as its electronic toll collection system. If you’re moving away, remember to remove your transponder to avoid unexpected charges. For those moving to LA, consider signing up for FasTrak to ease your commute on toll roads.
California has strict vehicle inspection laws. After shipping a car to Los Angeles, you’ll need to complete a smog check within 20 days of registering your vehicle. The car transport process doesn’t exempt you from this requirement. Vehicle registration in California must be completed within 20 days of establishing residency. You’ll need to visit a local DMV office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and complete a California registration application.
Parking in LA can be challenging. Many neighborhoods require resident parking permits. Check with your local council office to apply for the appropriate pass. This is especially important if you’re using a car shipping company that might deliver your vehicle to your new address.
When settling in Los Angeles, set up utilities promptly. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) provides both water and electricity. For internet, providers like Spectrum, AT&T, and Frontier are popular options. Don’t forget to register to vote at your new address and enroll children in the Los Angeles Unified School District if applicable.
If you’re moving away from LA and used Los Angeles car shipping services, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify relevant authorities of your move. The mild climate in Los Angeles means car transport is generally straightforward year-round, but be prepared for occasional heat waves that might affect delivery schedules.
Whether you’re shipping a car to or from LA, familiarize yourself with major routes like I-5, I-10, and I-405. These highways are crucial for auto transport companies and will likely be part of your vehicle’s journey to its new home in the City of Angels.
Los Angeles, California Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Los Angeles?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Los Angeles. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Los Angeles?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Los Angeles?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Los Angeles?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

However, there are still important considerations to keep in mind:
1. Summer Heat: Los Angeles summers can be hot, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F (32°C). When shipping a car during this season, consider using a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior. Also, avoid leaving heat-sensitive items in the car during transport.

3. Peak Seasons: Los Angeles car shipping tends to be busiest during the summer months and around major holidays. If possible, try to schedule your auto transport during off-peak times to potentially save on costs and ensure quicker service.
4. College Move-In/Out: With several universities in the area, including UCLA and USC, expect increased demand for car transport services in late August and early June. Plan ahead if you need to ship a car during these periods.
5. Tourist Season: Los Angeles is a popular tourist destination year-round, but particularly during summer and major events like awards shows. This can impact traffic and potentially affect car shipping schedules.
By keeping these factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient car shipping experience to or from Los Angeles. Always communicate with your chosen car shipping company about any specific concerns or requirements you may have based on the time of year you’re planning to transport your vehicle.

For winter breaks, some universities provide long-term storage options, but always check with your school’s transportation services. While snow isn’t a concern in LA, students should prepare for occasional heavy rains. Before relocating, verify that your auto insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. If you’re unsure about shipping a car or need car transport services, consider consulting a reputable car shipping company. Reviews from our California Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied California customers:
“We used Sherpa Auto Transport to ship our car from Los Angeles to Austin. We started this online, and the whole process was very smooth and seamless. They were prompt, efficient, and friendly, and the cost to me was very reasonable. We were kept informed throughout the process.”
“I was moving across states. I went online and used three websites that were pretty reliable. I called the top 3 auto transport companies that received the highest reviews. I made a call to Sherpa as they were within the top 3 and the initial quote was almost exactly the same as the other company I was considering. I told the Sherpa person to call me back in 30 minutes because I had to discuss with my fiance the pros and cons with each company. We looked at the reviews on the Sherpa website before we received a callback. We primarily went with them because their prices were pretty much comparable to the other two companies. Then the people were really friendly, straightforward, easy to understand, and didn’t throw a lot of jargon. It was pretty simple to follow and that made me feel comfortable and understand the picture of the service that they provide and how things were to go about.”
“I had a very good experience with Sherpa. Their ratings on the Better Business Bureau and the ConsumerAffairs` website made me decide to go with them. Plus, I couldn’t find any really bad, negative reviews of Sherpa online so that made me feel they were a safe bet. I had checked the company before them and when it came down to the pickup date, they had started giving me the runaround. I called Sherpa and they picked up a day earlier than they said they would. Everything was very straightforward. They gave me the quote, explained that the car needed to be fully cleaned out and I couldn’t have any personal items in there. I live in a major city center and the carrier truck was not able to come to my location. But I was able to take an Uber 20 minutes away to meet the driver at his trucking facility and he gave me the keys. I looked over my car, signed the paperwork and he handed over two money orders. Everything was fine with my vehicle and I was very thankful that there was nothing wrong with my car. I got my car sooner than expected as well. I paid about $1500 total and for me that was fair. What they said was what it was and there were no surprises. The quality of their service was good and it was worth it.”
“I purchased a ’99 BMW and it was coming from California. I used Sherpa as the reviews that I saw were much better than the others. I had a very good interaction with customer service. They introduced themselves and were very thorough as far as explaining the process step by step. They answered any questions that I had. The rep was very insightful and knowledgeable as far as expectation when it comes to timeframes, which was very nice. He was a very good representative. The pricing was very comparable to other providers. There was only a $20 or $30 difference from the other companies. Even though they were a little bit more, I didn’t mind. I liked the Price Lock Promise. The delivery actually worked out very well and the car got here super quickly over the weekend. They picked it up on Friday and I got it on Monday. The driver was very nice and let me know when he was 30 minutes away. He brought the car to my house. He backed it out for me and gave me my paperwork. I did an open transport and it was uncovered. The car just looked like it had been driven in the wind but it was exactly how it was when it was picked up. I would have liked to have done the closed transport but it’s understandable that it’s a little bit more expensive. But for what I was getting, the price was spot on. Sherpa is worth it.”
“I’ve had horrible experiences making calls a 2 yrs ago, planning a move and needing my car shipped. I was getting hammered for a couple weeks by annoying calls, texts, and emails from many transport companies that didn’t seem legit. Fast forward, my moving plans fell through, and this time around, I took my time researching for reliable transport companies. I stumbled upon Sherpa reviews here, which made me more comfortable and confident to call, needing my car shipped from San Diego to Florida. Customer service was excellent with my first call, explained how transport works, they aren’t like the companies that have hundreds of random people calling, texting, and emailing, asked for a window date I needed my car picked up, and got a quote done. I felt great after the call. Communication was top notch from customer service to the driver. 2 weeks later, I got a call from the driver letting me know what day and time he’s arriving. The driver actually arrived a day or 2 earlier that was on a Sunday, which wasn’t a problem. I took pics of the outside and inside my car. The driver took pics as well, including pics of my car being loaded on the truck that were also sent to me through text message. The driver was very detailed, and told me he’ll have updates in the next couple days. That Wednesday morning, the driver sent me a text with a picture of his truck that had other cars on it, and said my car will be delivered early in the morning Thursday! I was impressed how fast shipping was! That Thursday, a family was contacted by the driver for delivery. The delivery was very smooth, recieved a pic of my car in a nearby parking lot due to his truck being too big for residential areas that was less than 1 mile away. My family member retrieved my car after doing an inspection with the driver. No scratches or damages whatsoever! Received the bill of lading afterwards. It’s nice having your car at its final destination before I fly out! I’m very impressed with this company! I highly recommend Sherpa!”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Los Angeles, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of California. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
