- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our California customers say about Sherpa:
“I called Sherpa because they had such a high review. They arranged the transport on the same day on an emergency basis, got a driver, and picked the car up and took it to Boston. That bailed us out of a bad situation and it went well. They kept us informed. We couldn’t even get the other company to answer the phone, but Sherpa always answered the phone and they always knew where the car was and gave us updates.”
“I stumbled upon Sherpa reviews here, which made me more comfortable and confident to call, needing my car shipped from San Diego to Florida. Customer service was excellent with my first call, explained how transport works, they aren’t like the companies that have hundreds of random people calling, texting, and emailing, asked for a window date I needed my car picked up, and got a quote done. I felt great after the call.”
“After retrieving a quote for nearly every company in the article, I instantly put Sherpa at the top of my list because of their promised flat-rate policy. If you have experience shipping a car, you know how great this is. Shortly after, I received a phone call from a very lovely worker who offered me a much appreciated rebate if I chose to go with them instead of other companies I was considering at the time.”

When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect California Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: California’s vast size impacts shipping costs. Transporting a car from San Francisco to Los Angeles will be cheaper than shipping from San Diego to Redding due to the longer distance.
- Route Popularity: Major routes like I-5, I-10, and I-80 are typically less expensive for car shipping due to high carrier traffic. Remote areas off these main arteries may incur higher costs.
- Seasonal Factors: California’s mild climate means less seasonal variation in car shipping prices compared to other states. However, summer months can see slightly higher rates due to increased demand.
- Vehicle Type: Shipping a standard sedan will be less expensive than transporting a large SUV or luxury vehicle. High-end cars may require enclosed transport, which is pricier but offers better protection.
- Timeframe: Flexible pickup and delivery dates can lead to lower costs. Rush orders or specific date requirements may increase the price of your car shipping service.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in California. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, provides added protection for high-value or classic vehicles.
Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from California. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your California car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open car shipping is generally more affordable than enclosed transport. It offers greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates, especially along major California interstates like I-5 and I-80.
- Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors to find convenient locations near major highways. Cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento often offer cost-effective options.
- Lighten your load: Remove personal items from your vehicle before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
- Flexibility is key: Being open to various pickup and delivery dates can lead to better pricing options. Consider adjusting your schedule to take advantage of less busy shipping times.
- Opt for door-to-terminal: While Sherpa doesn’t offer terminal-to-terminal services, choosing door-to-terminal or terminal-to-door can sometimes reduce costs compared to full door-to-door shipping.
- Consider seasonal timing: California’s mild climate means year-round shipping is possible, but rates may vary seasonally. Spring and fall often offer competitive pricing for auto transport services.

How does California Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process in California requires careful planning, especially given the state’s unique geography and climate. Whether you’re moving to the sunny beaches of Southern California or the tech hubs of Silicon Valley, here’s a guide to help you ship your car to or from the Golden State:
1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free instant quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you an idea of costs based on factors like your vehicle type and the specific California routes involved.
2. Choose Your Transport Method: Consider California’s diverse climate when deciding between open or enclosed auto transport. Enclosed transport offers extra protection from sun exposure in desert areas or potential salt air damage near coastal regions.
3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Follow our comprehensive guide on how to ship a car, paying special attention to California-specific tips. For instance, remove all personal items and ensure your car is clean to pass any potential agricultural inspections at state borders.
4. Plan for Traffic: California’s major cities are known for heavy traffic. Be flexible with pickup and delivery times, especially if your route involves congested areas like Los Angeles or San Francisco.
5. Consider Seasonal Factors: California’s wildfire season can impact transport routes. Stay informed about potential road closures or delays, particularly when shipping to or from rural areas.
6. Understand Local Regulations: If you’re moving to California permanently, be aware of the state’s strict emissions standards. Ensure your vehicle complies or plan for necessary modifications upon arrival.
By following these steps and working with a trusted California car shipping company, you can ensure a smooth auto transport experience. Remember, whether you’re headed to the redwood forests of Northern California or the sun-soaked beaches of San Diego, professional car shipping services can make your move stress-free and efficient.
California Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to or from California, it’s crucial to be aware of the state’s unique vehicle requirements and regulations. California has strict emissions standards, so ensure your vehicle complies with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations. If you’re moving to California, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 20 days of establishing residency. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles vehicle registration, and you may need to pass a smog check before completing the process.
For those using car shipping services to transport their vehicle, remember to remove your FasTrak transponder to avoid accidental toll charges. FasTrak is the electronic toll collection system used throughout California. Also, be mindful of parking regulations in your new city, as some areas require residential parking permits.
When moving to California, set up utilities like electricity and water. Major providers include Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), Southern California Edison, and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, depending on your location. For internet services, popular options include AT&T, Spectrum, and Xfinity.
Don’t forget to update your voter registration, enroll children in local schools, and obtain a library card. If you’re leaving California, remember to cancel gym memberships and forward your mail to your new address.
California’s diverse climate, from Mediterranean in the south to alpine in the north, can affect your car transport experience. Be prepared for potential delays during wildfire season or winter storms in mountainous regions. Major highways like I-5, I-10, and I-80 are crucial for auto transport across the state, connecting major cities and facilitating efficient car shipping.
By considering these factors and working with a reputable car shipping company, your move to or from the Golden State can be smooth and stress-free. Whether you’re relocating to sunny San Diego or leaving the bustling Bay Area, proper planning ensures your vehicle arrives safely at its destination.
California Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from California?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from California. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from California?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from California?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to California?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in California
When planning car shipping to or from California, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse climate and seasonal factors. California’s weather varies dramatically from north to south and coast to inland, affecting auto transport logistics throughout the year.
In coastal areas, mild temperatures prevail year-round, making car shipping relatively straightforward. However, inland regions experience more extreme conditions. During summer, temperatures in places like Death Valley can soar above 120°F. If you’re shipping a car to these areas, consider:
- Using a sunshade to protect your vehicle’s interior
- Removing heat-sensitive items from the car
- Scheduling early morning or evening pickup/delivery to avoid peak heat
In contrast, northern California and mountainous regions can experience snow and ice in winter. When using car shipping services in these areas:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport
- Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground
- Avoid storing liquids that might freeze and expand
Beyond weather, consider peak seasons for auto transport in California:
- Summer: Busiest season for car shipping companies, with higher demand and potentially higher prices
- Fall/Spring: Ideal times for shipping a car, with milder weather and lower demand
- Winter: Less busy, but weather challenges in some areas
Additionally, factor in local events that may impact California car shipping:
- College move-in/out periods in university towns
- Major festivals like Coachella or Burning Man
- Seasonal tourism influxes in popular destinations
By considering these factors, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient car transport experience to or from the Golden State.
Car Shipping for College Students in California
When considering car shipping to California for college, it’s crucial to understand each university’s parking policies. Most California campuses require parking permits, which can be obtained through online registration or campus parking offices. For example, UC Berkeley and UCLA have strict parking regulations, with limited spaces available. Students often need to enter a lottery system for permits.
Off-campus housing near California universities may not always include parking, so it’s essential to factor this into your decision when choosing accommodation. If you’re planning to ship your car to California for school, research long-term parking options for breaks. Many campuses offer secure storage lots, but spaces are limited and may require advance reservation.
Weather considerations for California car transport vary by region. While snow tires aren’t typically necessary in southern California, northern areas like Humboldt State University may require them during winter months. Before finalizing your auto transport to California, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. This ensures you’re protected in case of unexpected issues with your vehicle after the car shipping service delivers it.
Lastly, if you’re using a car shipping company to transport your vehicle to California, coordinate the delivery date with your move-in schedule and campus parking availability. This planning will help ensure a smooth transition and avoid potential parking violations or storage issues upon arrival.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in California
California is home to numerous military installations across various branches. For service members relocating to or from these bases, understanding the local auto transport landscape is crucial. Most bases offer on-site parking, but it’s wise to confirm with your specific installation. Some bases may require special vehicle registration or decals for on-base driving.
Neighborhoods surrounding military installations often have ample street parking, but always check local regulations. For those shipping a car to California bases, it’s essential to coordinate delivery locations with your car shipping company. Many bases have designated areas for auto transport drop-offs.
California military communities benefit from various resources. Commissaries and exchanges offer cost-effective shopping options. Additionally, many bases provide family support centers, offering assistance with relocation and local information.
When considering California car shipping services, remember that Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount. We deeply appreciate the service of our military members and their families. Our team is committed to providing top-notch car transport services to ensure a smooth transition during your PCS move.
Whether you’re shipping a car to Camp Pendleton, Naval Base San Diego, or any other California installation, our expert team is here to assist. We understand the unique needs of military relocations and strive to make your auto transport experience as seamless as possible.
Reviews from our California Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied California customers:
“I have to say Sherpa Auto transport did a great job guiding me through our first auto transport from California to FL. I had questions, I had concerns and I had a great deal of anxiousness with the whole industry after reading so many horror stories. Sherpa followed through on what was promised and any time I emailed or called they were there for me. The trucking company that ultimately handled the car was GREAT!”
“Setting up the transport was super easy. I called Sherpa and told them what I needed. They sent me a price. They followed up with an email. There were absolutely no surprises. The pickup and delivery were both good. They wanted to pick up earlier and we weren’t really ready for earlier, which is always a good thing. So we scheduled a time and the driver called about 30 minutes out. Then he sent a text and was there on time, and loaded the cars.”
“Sherpa was highly rated and the individual that I ended up speaking with when I was making arrangements was very professional, courteous and not pushy. They notified me of when the things would happen, usually by text or voice mail, and it was always good information and helpful. The quote was a little higher than some of the others, but the rating was what reassured me.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in California, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of California. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
Fun Facts About Car Shipping
- The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
- Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
- The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
- During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
- Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
- Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
Benefits of Using a Car Transport Company
Choosing car shipping services for your California move offers significant advantages. It provides unmatched convenience, saving you time and effort. Professional auto transport companies have the expertise to handle your vehicle safely, ensuring timely delivery. Many offer insurance coverage, giving you peace of mind during transit. By opting to ship a car, you avoid the stress of long-distance driving across California’s diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to winding coastal highways. This makes car transport a cost-effective and hassle-free solution, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your relocation while your vehicle is in capable hands.
Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company
When choosing an auto transport company for California car shipping, prioritize reputation and experience. Look for providers with a proven track record of successful car transports and positive customer reviews. Ensure the company offers adequate insurance coverage and maintains a good safety record with the FMCSA. Consider factors like pricing, customer service quality, and available services. Be wary of unusually low quotes or companies demanding large upfront deposits. For a smooth car shipping experience in the Golden State, select a reputable auto transport provider that understands California’s unique terrain and regulations. By carefully evaluating these aspects, you’ll find a reliable partner for your car shipping needs, whether you’re moving to Silicon Valley or shipping your classic convertible to sunny SoCal.
