Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Scottsdale customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The carrier they found for me was WONDERFUL. Sherpa gave me his cell and email as soon as it was booked, and he was a great communicator. My car arrived in perfect condition, even earlier than originally quoted. The price was also super competitive – I would venture to say it was actually on the lower end of quotes (not the cheapest, but definitely not the most expensive) and the customer service provided was worth far more than I paid. Thank you for taking such great care of my car, and for making this the easiest part of my cross-country move to Scottsdale!”

Yelp
★★★★★

“This is my 2nd time using Sherpa to move my car from Arizona to Connecticut and back again. They are easy to deal with. They gave me a firm price and they stick to it. The vehicle was delivered on time. My vehicle arrived in good shape. What more could I ask for? I would recommend Sherpa and have twice already.”

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I cannot believe how smooth and easy this process was, my car was picked up and delivered across two states in a day and a half. The driver was excellent and kind and kept me updated, and the car was exactly how I left it upon delivery. I wish I had known about this affordable service long ago! I always thought it would be too expensive but it was not much more than driving it myself having to stop and get a hotel and gas. Definitely recommend!”

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs to or from Scottsdale, AZ. Longer distances typically result in higher prices, but the cost per mile often decreases for longer trips.
  • Transport Type: Open carriers are the most common and cost-effective option for auto transport to Scottsdale. Enclosed trailers, while offering extra protection, are about 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, typically cost more to ship to Scottsdale due to the space they occupy on the carrier.
  • Seasonal Factors: Scottsdale’s hot summers can affect car shipping prices. The peak season for auto transport to Arizona is often during winter months when snowbirds flock to the area, potentially increasing demand and costs.
  • Route Popularity: Scottsdale’s proximity to major highways like I-10 and I-17 can influence pricing. More frequent routes often have competitive rates due to higher carrier availability.
  • Delivery Timeframe: Expedited shipping to Scottsdale will cost more than standard delivery options. Flexible pickup and delivery dates can help reduce costs.
  • Vehicle Condition: Non-running vehicles require special equipment for loading and unloading in Scottsdale, which increases the overall shipping cost.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Scottsdale, AZ. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Scottsdale car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping is generally more affordable and provides greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates compared to enclosed carriers.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-10 or Loop 101. This can help reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your overall price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your Scottsdale auto transport.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Arizona’s mild winters make Scottsdale a popular destination. Booking during off-peak seasons may result in more competitive rates for car shipping services.
  • Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re moving multiple vehicles, inquire about potential savings for shipping more than one car at a time.

How does Scottsdale Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the Car Shipping Process in Scottsdale, AZ

Shipping a car to or from Scottsdale, Arizona requires careful planning and consideration of the unique local conditions. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the auto transport process in the Valley of the Sun:

  • Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a car shipping quote from a reputable auto transport company like Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you an idea of the costs involved in shipping your vehicle to or from Scottsdale.
  • Choose Your Transport Method: Consider whether you want open or enclosed car transport. Given Scottsdale’s intense sun and occasional dust storms, enclosed transport might be preferable for protecting your vehicle from the elements.
  • Prepare Your Vehicle: Before shipping, prepare your car for transport. This includes washing it, removing personal items, and ensuring it’s in good working condition. In Scottsdale’s hot climate, it’s especially important to check fluid levels and tire pressure.
  • Plan for Seasonal Variations: Be aware that car shipping to Scottsdale can be busier during the winter months when “snowbirds” flock to the area. Book your auto transport well in advance during these peak times.
  • Consider Local Logistics: Scottsdale’s well-maintained roads and proximity to major highways like I-17 and Loop 101 make it easily accessible for auto transport. However, if you live in a gated community or area with narrow streets, discuss pickup and delivery options with your car shipping company.
  • Be Prepared for Delivery: Upon arrival, inspect your vehicle thoroughly. Scottsdale’s bright sunlight can be helpful for spotting any potential issues during the final inspection.

By following these steps and working with a reliable car transport company, you can ensure a smooth auto shipping experience to or from Scottsdale. Remember, the key to successful car shipping is proper planning and clear communication with your chosen auto transport provider.

Scottsdale Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping your car to or from Scottsdale, AZ, it’s essential to be aware of local regulations and practical considerations. Arizona doesn’t require vehicle inspections for personal vehicles, which simplifies the process for new residents. However, you’ll need to register your vehicle within 15 days of establishing residency. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) handles vehicle registration, and you can complete most processes online for convenience.

Scottsdale doesn’t have toll roads, so there’s no need to worry about removing toll readers. However, if you’re planning trips to neighboring states like California or Texas, consider getting an EZ Pass for smoother travel. Parking in Scottsdale is generally straightforward, with ample public parking available downtown. Some residential areas may require permits, so check with your new neighborhood association.

When moving to Scottsdale, remember to set up essential utilities. Arizona Public Service (APS) and Salt River Project (SRP) are the main electricity providers, while the City of Scottsdale Water Resources handles water services. For internet, you have options like Cox Communications and CenturyLink. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and transfer your driver’s license within 30 days of moving.

Scottsdale’s climate is hot and dry, so when shipping your car, consider requesting enclosed auto transport to protect it from intense sun and potential dust storms. The city is well-connected by highways, with I-10 and Loop 101 providing easy access for car transport services.

If you’re moving away from Scottsdale, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify important contacts of your address change. Whether you’re coming or going, using a reliable car shipping company can make your move smoother, allowing you to focus on settling into your new home while professionals handle your vehicle’s safe transport.

Scottsdale, Arizona Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Scottsdale?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Scottsdale. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Scottsdale?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Scottsdale?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Scottsdale?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Scottsdale

When planning car shipping to or from Scottsdale, AZ, it’s crucial to consider the unique seasonal factors that can impact your auto transport experience. Scottsdale’s climate presents both challenges and opportunities for those looking to ship a car to or from this vibrant desert city.

Scottsdale experiences extremely hot summers, with temperatures often soaring above 100°F (38°C). If you’re scheduling car shipping services during these months, consider these tips:

  • Install a sunshade under your car’s windshield to protect the interior from intense heat.
  • Remove any heat-sensitive items from your vehicle before transport.
  • Check your car’s coolant levels and tire pressure, as extreme heat can affect both.

While winters in Scottsdale are mild, the city can experience occasional frost. When shipping a car during cooler months:

  • Ensure your antifreeze levels are adequate.
  • Remove any liquids that might freeze and expand, potentially causing damage.

Scottsdale’s popularity as a winter destination for ‘snowbirds’ significantly impacts car transport demand. The busiest times for auto transport in Scottsdale are typically:

  • Late fall (October-November) as snowbirds arrive
  • Early spring (March-April) as they depart

To avoid peak rates and potential delays, consider scheduling your car shipping a few weeks before or after these busy periods. Your chosen car shipping company can provide more specific guidance on optimal timing.

By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, you can ensure a smooth and efficient car shipping experience to or from Scottsdale, AZ. Always consult with your auto transport specialist for the most up-to-date advice tailored to your specific needs and timeframe.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Scottsdale, Arizona

When considering car shipping to Scottsdale, Arizona for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at nearby universities. Arizona State University’s Tempe campus, just a short drive from Scottsdale, requires students to purchase parking permits for on-campus lots. These permits can be obtained online and are in high demand, so early registration is recommended. Most off-campus apartments near ASU offer parking, but it’s wise to confirm this before signing a lease. For students using auto transport services to bring their cars to Scottsdale, it’s important to note that ASU provides long-term parking options during breaks. However, spaces are limited and require advance reservation. While Scottsdale’s mild climate doesn’t necessitate snow tires, students should ensure their vehicles are prepared for intense summer heat. Lastly, when shipping a car to Scottsdale for college, double-check that your roadside assistance coverage extends to Arizona, providing peace of mind in your new location.

What is Auto Transport? Icon

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Scottsdale, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Arizona. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]
