Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs Icon

Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our Arizona customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“The car was picked up exactly where and when we expected. The two young drivers were neat. They shuffled the cars around to get them in the order they needed them. We watched them do it very carefully in moving cars in and out. And off they went. It disappeared in Phoenix, Arizona. Our family members were here already in Michigan when the car arrived. It arrived at exactly the right time.”

★★★★★

“Despite the horror stories you can find online I have found that auto shipping is generally reliable if you do your research and don’t go just for price. I have shipped three times now, two times across country and the service was good with the other carrier, Sherpa was excellent. The online process is easy and professional for the industry. The paperwork and disclosures were all straight forward and timely. Everything is straight to email. One slight difference is you pay for shipping in two parts and the second part did not offer a credit card option. The shipper S&N Trucking was A+++ fantastic. I was very happy with his profesionalism and communication through out the job. He navigated far more precisely than I’ve seen before and never kept me waiting. During my shipment a bad weather pattern started across the states causing a 50 car pile up around Arizona.”

“It was such a struggle for me to figure out which transport company to choose. I did so much research, read so many horror stories and I couldn’t bear the thought of being amongst the many disappointed persons who felt blindsided by original quotes or by unfulfilled promises from many other transport companies that look for your business. So what I decided on doing was going with my gut and trusting the search I did on the Top 10 best auto transport companies out there…and I went with #1 SHERPA TRANSPORT. I can’t express enough how well informed they were with me..their eagerness to reassure me and their following through with my expectations. My vehicle arrived intact…I was blessed that Sherpa Auto contracted a wonderful carrier…the driver contacted me and arrived on a timely manner and very professional. So all you nervous wrecks out there who question what to do…take it from me ..my satisfaction was 1000% positive!! Thanks Sherpa for your diligence and honesty. By the way, in case you’re wondering I transported a 2014 Ford Focus SE with only 29,000 miles from New York to Pheonix Arizona.”

Factors that affect Arizona Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance: The length of the journey significantly impacts car shipping costs. Transporting a vehicle across Arizona’s vast desert landscapes or from Arizona to other states will generally cost more than shorter routes.
  • Transport Type: Open transport is the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in Arizona. Enclosed transport, while offering extra protection from Arizona’s intense sun and occasional dust storms, is typically 50% more expensive and may have longer delivery times.
  • Vehicle Size and Weight: Larger or heavier vehicles, such as SUVs or trucks, will cost more to ship due to the space they occupy and their impact on fuel consumption.
  • Route Accessibility: Shipping to or from major Arizona cities like Phoenix or Tucson along Interstate 10 or Interstate 17 is generally more affordable than remote locations off the beaten path.
  • Seasonal Factors: Summer months in Arizona can see increased demand for car shipping services, potentially leading to higher prices. Winter months may offer more competitive rates.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to transport. Non-running cars require special equipment for loading, increasing the cost.
  • Timing Flexibility: If you can be flexible with your pickup and delivery dates, you may find more competitive rates for car shipping to or from Arizona.

Understanding these factors can help you make informed decisions when shipping your car to or from Arizona. For a more detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Arizona car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Open carriers are more cost-effective for most vehicles. While enclosed transport is necessary for some cars, open shipping offers greater flexibility and lower rates for Arizona auto transport.
  • Consider location: Discuss pickup and drop-off points with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major Arizona highways like I-10, I-17, or I-40. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and potential liability issues during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better pricing options. Additionally, being open to various locations within Arizona for vehicle collection or drop-off may result in cost savings.
  • Opt for off-peak seasons: If possible, schedule your car shipping during less busy times. Avoiding peak moving seasons in Arizona, such as summer months, can often lead to more competitive rates.

How does Arizona Car Shipping Work?

Steps of the Car Transport Process

Navigating the car shipping process to or from Arizona requires careful planning, especially considering the state’s unique climate and geography. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth auto transport experience:

1. Get an Instant Quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company. This will give you an idea of costs based on factors like vehicle type, route, and shipping method.

2. Book Your Shipment: Once you’re satisfied with the quote, lock in your shipment. Remember, nothing is due upfront with Sherpa Auto Transport.

3. Prepare Your Vehicle: Arizona’s intense heat and dust can affect your car during transport. Thoroughly wash and inspect your vehicle, document any existing damage, and remove personal items. For a comprehensive checklist, check out our guide on how to ship a car.

4. Consider the Season: Arizona’s summer temperatures can soar above 100°F. If possible, schedule your car shipping during cooler months to minimize potential heat-related issues.

5. Choose the Right Transport Method: Open transport is cost-effective, but enclosed transport offers extra protection from Arizona’s harsh sun and potential dust storms.

6. Plan for Pickup and Delivery: Arizona’s major highways like I-10, I-17, and I-40 make it accessible for auto transport. However, if you’re in a remote area, you might need to arrange a meeting point in a larger city.

7. Stay Informed: During transit, keep in touch with your auto transport company for updates on your vehicle’s progress across Arizona’s vast landscapes.

8. Receive Your Vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly. The dry Arizona climate means dust is common, so don’t be alarmed if your vehicle needs a wash.

By following these steps and working with a reliable car shipping company, you can ensure a hassle-free auto transport experience to or from the Grand Canyon State. Remember, proper preparation is key to navigating Arizona’s unique car shipping challenges.

Arizona Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to Arizona or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Arizona doesn’t use traditional toll readers, so there’s no need to remove them before car transport. However, the state does have specific vehicle inspection laws. All vehicles must pass an emissions test in certain areas, including Phoenix and Tucson. For vehicle registration, visit the Arizona Department of Transportation website or a local MVD office.

When settling in Arizona, consider the following:

  • Utilities: Major providers include Arizona Public Service (APS) and Salt River Project (SRP) for electricity, and various municipal water departments.
  • Internet: Cox Communications and CenturyLink are popular providers.
  • Voting: Register at the Arizona Secretary of State website.
  • Schools: Enroll children through the local school district’s website.
  • Libraries: Obtain a card at your nearest public library.

If you’re moving away from Arizona, remember to cancel local memberships, forward your mail, and notify relevant authorities of your address change.

When using car shipping services in Arizona, consider the state’s unique climate and geography. The extreme heat can affect vehicles, so ensure your auto transport company is prepared for these conditions. Arizona’s major highways, including I-10, I-17, and I-40, are crucial for car transport routes.

Whether you’re moving to the bustling Phoenix metro area, the scenic Tucson region, or the cooler northern parts of the state, understanding these local nuances will help ensure a smooth transition when shipping your car to Arizona. Always choose a reputable car shipping company familiar with Arizona’s unique landscape and regulations to ensure your vehicle arrives safely at its destination.

Arizona Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Arizona?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Arizona. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Arizona?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Arizona?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Arizona?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?

Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.

Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.

Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?

Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Arizona

When planning car shipping to or from Arizona, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique climate and seasonal factors. Arizona’s extreme heat can significantly impact auto transport schedules and vehicle preparation. During summer months, temperatures can soar above 100°F (38°C), making it essential to take precautions when shipping a car to the Grand Canyon State.

Here are some practical tips for Arizona car shipping:

  • Summer Precautions: Use a sunshade under your windshield to protect the interior from intense heat. Remove heat-sensitive items that might melt or warp.
  • Monsoon Season: From June to September, be aware of potential dust storms and flash floods. Choose covered car transport options if possible.
  • Winter in Northern Arizona: While rare, snow can occur in higher elevations. Avoid using snow chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them installed.
  • Snowbird Season: Plan ahead for busier car shipping services between October and April when winter visitors flock to Arizona.

It’s also worth noting that Arizona’s car shipping demand peaks during certain times:

  • College Move-In: August and September see increased demand due to students returning to Arizona’s universities.
  • Spring Training: February and March bring baseball fans and their vehicles to the Phoenix area.
  • Holiday Season: November through January can be busier with holiday travelers and snowbirds arriving.

To ensure a smooth car transport experience, book your Arizona auto transport well in advance during these peak times. Consider flexible pickup and delivery dates to potentially save on costs. By understanding these seasonal factors, you can better plan your car shipping needs and ensure your vehicle arrives safely in the beautiful state of Arizona.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Arizona

When planning to ship a car to Arizona for college, it’s crucial to consider parking logistics at universities. Most Arizona schools require parking permits, which students must purchase and display. For instance, at Arizona State University, students can buy annual or semester passes online. University of Arizona offers various parking options, including garage and surface lot permits. Remember to apply early, as spaces can be limited.

Many off-campus apartments near Arizona universities provide parking, but it’s essential to confirm this before signing a lease. For students living on campus, dorm parking availability varies by school. When using car shipping services to Arizona, inquire about long-term parking options for breaks. Some universities offer secure storage lots for extended periods.

Weather is another factor to consider when shipping a car to Arizona. While snow tires aren’t typically necessary, extreme heat can affect vehicles. Ensure your car has proper coolant levels and consider window tinting to protect the interior. Before finalizing your auto transport to Arizona, check if your current insurance and roadside assistance plans cover you in your new location. If not, research local options to stay protected on Arizona’s roads.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Arizona

Arizona is home to several military installations, making it a crucial hub for service members. If you’re planning to ship a car to Arizona for military relocation, here’s what you need to know:

Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix offers on-base parking, but space is limited. Many personnel opt for off-base housing with ample parking. The surrounding neighborhoods generally have open parking policies.

Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista provides on-post parking, but it’s advisable to check availability beforehand. The area around the base is military-friendly with few parking restrictions.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson has on-base parking options, but they can fill up quickly. Many service members live off-base where parking is typically unrestricted.

For all bases, standard Arizona vehicle registration applies. However, active duty military members can maintain home state registration if desired.

Each installation offers various resources for military families, including:

  • Commissaries for discounted groceries
  • Base Exchange (BX) for tax-free shopping
  • Medical facilities
  • Family support centers

When using car shipping services to Arizona, inform your auto transport company about your military status. Sherpa Auto Transport offers a $50 military discount to thank you and your family for your service. Whether you’re shipping a car to Luke AFB, Fort Huachuca, or Davis-Monthan AFB, we’re here to make your Arizona car shipping experience smooth and stress-free.

“The experience with Sherpa was wonderful. We contacted different auto transport companies. Sherpa answered a bunch of questions I had that other people couldn’t answer. They were competitive in their pricing too. It was less than I thought it was going to be. When you look at the bad reviews of different companies, you always find out that it’s a bait-and-switch price thing. It scares you a little bit. But Sherpa’s price guarantee alleviated a lot of that. Within a half hour of agreeing with Sherpa, they had a driver assigned. The driver called me up the day before. He told me he was likely to make it out the next morning, but there was a chance he would be there that night and asked if that would be a problem. I told him it wouldn’t be. They picked up the car earlier than we had expected. But we were prepared to do it. The driver was pleasant. He was able to communicate and got the car off the truck. The car came three days before it was anticipated. The driver called the day before to let me know and pinpointed a time. Around that time, he called me up and asked if I could meet him at his location which I did. The car came off perfectly. I’m very happy with their services. When you read about these types of companies that are middlemen like Sherpa, it’s a scary process ’cause you hear all kinds of horror stories. But Sherpa was able to relax me, calm me down, and had a flawless pick-up and delivery. The group that Sherpa contracted with was a company called Umbrella. Through emails and communications with both Umbrella and Sherpa, I had the driver’s contact information the whole time. I was clearly led through perfectly. They allowed us extra weight in the car, but we didn’t need any of it. I was floored with how well things went, especially when you consider the weather patterns that were going through East Coast and through the Midwest in early January. Instead of taking the north route, they took the south route through Texas and Arizona.”

“We used this service to transport our vehicle from California to Arizona. The entire experience was great. The company maintained regular communication with us, the driver was prompt, friendly, and he kept us up to date on the status of our vehicle throughout the transport process. I highly recommend this company and truly appreciate the excellent customer service of our driver, Artsiom.”

Google
★★★★★

“Sherpa found a shipper, and the car was transported from Arizona to Minnesota. A crack developed on the windshield of the car, and Sherpa’s sub-contractor specifically said they didn’t cover any glass damage. Sherpa reimbursed me for the entire amount of my insurance deductible plus the recommended change of the windshield wiper blades. So my out of pocket was zero.”

Google
★★★★★

“I called about 20 car transport companies. Sherpa was excellent. They were priced a little on the high side, but I wanted to feel assured my car would arrive quickly and safely, and it did! It took less than 4 days to have my car shipped from Illinois to Arizona. They picked up my car within 2 days of scheduling. They communicated very well and I’ll use them again as they were very professional and did not have any hidden fees.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Arizona, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Arizona. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  1. The first semi-truck was invented in 1898 by Alexander Winton to transport cars from his Cleveland-based Winton Motor Carriage Company. He wanted a way to deliver cars to customers without adding miles to the vehicles. [Source: Institute for Transportation, Iowa State University]
  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
  6. Auto transport trucks can have fuel tanks that hold up to 300 gallons of diesel, allowing them to travel over 2,000 miles without needing to refuel. This is crucial for long-haul routes, ensuring continuous operation with minimal stops. [Source: Diesel Technology Forum]
  7. Some modern car carriers are made of lightweight aluminum, which reduces the trailer’s weight by up to 3,000 pounds compared to steel. This allows for greater fuel efficiency and payload capacity, meaning carriers can transport more cars with less fuel. [Source: Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering]

Choosing the Right Auto Transport Company

Ensure the company offers adequate insurance coverage and maintains a good safety record with the FMCSA. Quality customer service is crucial, especially when shipping through Arizona’s extreme temperatures.
