What our Alabama customers say about Sherpa:
“We live in a rural area, so there weren’t a lot of large areas for us to meet up. He was very accommodating. The car was being transported from Alabama to Utah, so I was a little nervous with it being such a long trip. My daughter received the car in the same condition it left in. I’m so thrilled with the whole experience.”
“It was my first time getting my car transported, so yes I was a bit nervous. I was recommended to use Sherpa to get my car, 2020 Nissan Maxima, transported from Alabama to California. Kate made the process very simple for me. Kate explained to me what to expect throughout the process and in addition to that, the company will pay an extra $300 if a carrier wasn’t satisfied with the quoted cost.”
“I needed to ship my car from Huntsville, Alabama to Las Vegas. I decided on Sherpa auto because their quote was close to other shipping brokers, but they were the only one to offer a free car wash with their service. The customer service reps were friendly and efficient. They were able to find a truck driver within 3-4 days of me confirming my quote.”

Note: These figures are based on Sherpa’s actual data from the past 12 months of vehicle shipments to or from Alabama. When choosing an auto transport company, it is crucial to select the best car shipping company by considering factors such as reliability, customer satisfaction, and transparency in pricing.
Factors that affect Alabama Car Shipping Prices
- Distance and Route: Alabama’s central location in the Southeast means shipping costs can vary widely. Routes along major interstates like I-65, I-20, and I-85 are typically more affordable than rural areas. Shipping to or from cities like Birmingham, Montgomery, or Mobile is usually cheaper than remote locations.
- Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping in Alabama. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers protection from road debris and Alabama’s sometimes unpredictable weather, including heavy rains and occasional storms.
- Seasonal Factors: Alabama’s mild winters mean year-round shipping is possible, but costs may increase during peak seasons. Summer months and January often see higher prices due to increased demand for auto transport services.
- Vehicle Size and Type: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Alabama, may cost more to ship due to their size and weight. Sports cars or luxury vehicles might require special handling, potentially increasing costs.
- Pickup and Delivery Flexibility: Opting for a wider pickup window can reduce costs. Sherpa Auto Transport’s most economical option is typically a five-business-day window for pickup.
- Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are cheaper to ship as they can be driven onto the carrier. Inoperable vehicles require special equipment, increasing the cost of auto transport.
Understanding these factors can help you navigate the car shipping process in Alabama more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your Alabama car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
- Choose open transport: Open shipping provides the lowest rates and most flexibility for negotiating prices when transporting cars to or from Alabama.
- Select strategic locations: Work with Sherpa advisors to find pickup and drop-off points near major interstates like I-65, I-20, or I-85. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your Alabama car shipping service.
- Consider seasonal timing: Alabama’s mild winters can make it an ideal time for car transport, potentially leading to lower rates due to decreased demand.
- Opt for standard sizes: Shipping standard-sized vehicles is generally more cost-effective than transporting oversized or modified cars to or from Alabama.

Alabama Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Alabama or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Alabama doesn’t have toll roads, so there’s no need to remove toll readers. However, the state does require vehicle inspections for safety and emissions in certain counties. Be sure to check with the Alabama Department of Revenue for specific requirements in your area.
Vehicle registration in Alabama is straightforward. New residents have 30 days to register their vehicles. You’ll need to visit your local county license plate issuing office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and identification. Alabama’s hot, humid climate can be tough on vehicles, so consider this when using car shipping services or maintaining your car.
When moving to Alabama, setting up utilities is a priority. Major electricity providers include Alabama Power and Alabama Municipal Electric Authority. For water services, check with your local municipality. Internet providers vary by region, with options like AT&T, Spectrum, and Xfinity available in many areas.
Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll your children in local schools. Alabama’s public library system is excellent, so be sure to get your library card. If you’re moving away from Alabama, remember to cancel local memberships and forward your mail.
Alabama’s extensive highway system, including Interstates 65, 20, and 85, makes car transport relatively easy. However, be prepared for occasional severe weather, including hurricanes and tornadoes, which can affect auto transport schedules. When choosing a car shipping company, look for one experienced with Alabama’s unique climate and road conditions to ensure a smooth transport experience.
Alabama Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Alabama?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Alabama. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Alabama?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Alabama?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Alabama?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Alabama
When planning car shipping to or from Alabama, it’s crucial to consider the state’s unique seasonal weather patterns. Alabama experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters, with occasional extreme weather events that can impact auto transport schedules.
During summer months (June to September), temperatures can soar above 90°F (32°C). If you’re shipping a car during this time:
- Place a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior
- Remove heat-sensitive items from the vehicle
- Consider scheduling early morning or evening pickups to avoid peak heat
Winter in Alabama (December to February) is generally mild, but occasional snow and ice can occur, especially in northern parts of the state. For winter car transport:
- Ensure pickup/drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport
- Be flexible with scheduling, as weather delays may occur
Spring (March to May) brings a risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. When using car shipping services during this season, stay informed about weather forecasts and be prepared for potential delays.
Beyond weather considerations, timing is crucial for efficient Alabama car shipping. Keep in mind:
- College towns like Tuscaloosa and Auburn see increased demand in August and May
- Snowbird season (October to April) can affect availability and rates
- Major events like NASCAR races at Talladega Superspeedway may impact local transport
By considering these factors when scheduling your auto transport, you can ensure a smoother, more efficient experience when shipping your vehicle to or from the Heart of Dixie.
Car Shipping for College Students in Alabama
When considering car shipping to Alabama for college, it’s crucial to understand the parking situation at your chosen university. Most Alabama universities require students to register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. For instance, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa offers various parking options, including resident and commuter passes. Students should check their specific campus regulations, as some restrict freshman parking.
Many off-campus apartments near Alabama universities provide parking, but it’s wise to confirm this before signing a lease. For on-campus housing, parking availability varies by institution. When planning to ship a car to Alabama for college, consider long-term storage options during breaks. Some universities offer secure parking lots for extended periods, which can be convenient if you’re using car shipping services to transport your vehicle home.
Weather in Alabama is generally mild, so snow tires aren’t necessary. However, students should prepare for occasional severe weather, including hurricanes and tornadoes. Before using an auto transport company to bring your car to campus, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. This foresight can save you hassle and expense down the road. Remember, a reliable car shipping company can make your transition to college life in Alabama smoother, allowing you to focus on your studies rather than logistics.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Alabama
Alabama is home to several military installations, making it a crucial hub for service members and their families. Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery and Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville are two of the most prominent bases in the state. For military personnel relocating to these areas, it’s essential to know about parking and vehicle regulations.
At Maxwell AFB, on-base parking is available, but space can be limited. Many service members choose to live off-base in nearby neighborhoods, where parking is generally unrestricted. Redstone Arsenal also offers on-base parking, and the surrounding areas typically have ample parking options.
When it comes to vehicle registration, Alabama requires all residents, including military personnel, to register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. However, active-duty military members may be exempt from certain taxes and fees.
Both bases provide excellent resources for military families. The Maxwell AFB Commissary and the Redstone Arsenal Commissary offer discounted groceries and household items. Additionally, each base has its own Exchange, providing tax-free shopping for various goods.
For those needing car shipping services to or from Alabama’s military installations, Sherpa Auto Transport offers reliable and efficient auto transport solutions. We understand the unique needs of military personnel and are proud to offer a $50 military discount as a token of our appreciation for your service. Reviews from our Alabama Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Alabama customers:
“I needed to transport two cars from Alabama to Washington near the 4th of July holiday. I called Sherpa Auto Transport 1 month ahead of my desired transport date and met Dylan, a SAT representative, over the phone. He answered all my questions, reassured me of my concerns, and sent a follow-up email regarding our conversation. SAT was able to get a reputable carrier, and the carrier was a husband-wife company. The carrier was able to load our cars by our front door on a Wednesday with a projected arrival date the following Monday. Our cars arrived safely 1 day earlier at the front door. If we need to move across country again, we`ll be using Sherpa.”
“I had never needed to transport a vehicle ANYWHERE so I was nervous about choosing a company. I chose Sherpa Auto Transport because of the positive online reviews. I needed to transport a Ford Mustang from Alabama to Pennsylvania. I requested a quote online and in minutes I not only received an e-mailed quote, I received a phone call from Patrick at Sherpa Auto Transport. Patrick explained everything to me on how the process works which put my mind at ease. I received daily e-mail updates telling me they were working on securing a driver for me. I had a few additional questions that were answered quickly and professionally with a phone call. I received my car within the timeframe that was promised. The two drivers were very friendly and professional as well. I would not hesitate to call Sherpa Auto Transport again!”
“I want to thank Sherpa for transporting my late father`s Tacoma from Virginia to Alabama. I had not done proper due diligence when researching this process and had gone through two questionable companies before finding Sherpa. After one of the companies failed to pick up the truck as contracted, I contacted Sherpa and they picked it up the next day and it was at my house the day after. The whole process was great and I couldn`t be more pleased. If you need a vehicle transported, contacted this company as soon as possible, their rates are lower than others I researched and their process is flawless.”
“Sherpa was off the bat cheaper than going through Uship.com, by almost $200. Unlike other transport brokers, they guarantee there quote and will supplement the transporter up to $300 if needed to facilitate pickup/transport. My transport was from Az to Al (1700miles approx). Purchased Tundra on a Monday, and it was delivered to my house the following Monday. Full size trucks take a little longer, ** they take up more space. I felt this was plenty fast enough. This is my 4th transport, and 1st with Sherpa. They were by far the must economical and reliable. Will definitely use again”
“Great Customer Service, Great Driver and Great Prices. What more can you ask for”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Alabama, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Alabama. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
