What our Washington customers say about Sherpa:

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

"It was an easy process from start to end, from the time I picked up the phone and I called the customer service person. She was super helpful and gave me the ins and the outs about car transporting because I had no idea what that looked like. So, she gave me how it would go, and it went according to plan. Sherpa Auto Transport gave me a six-day window to pick the car up, and the dealership where I bought the car in Philadelphia said the car was picked up on a Wednesday afternoon. I got pictures of the car being loaded. It was an 80-foot enclosed transporter. It went seamless from what I heard from the dealership. I got a call from the driver who had the car on his transporter when he got here on early Monday morning when I went to pick up the car. I live in a residential area of Seattle and I said, "I will come to you.""

"I rarely leave reviews for things, but I wanted to for Sherpa because it was my first time shipping a vehicle and I chose Sherpa as my broker, and everything went great! They chose West Coast Auto Transport as my carrier (which they assigned very quickly) for shipping my car from WA State to Maryland, and their drivers were so kind and professional. They picked up my car on the first day of the pickup window, and despite a delay in delivery, the carrier gave me an update and the driver for delivery was very communicative about arrival and it truly was door-to-door service!"

"Our overall experience with Sherpa was largely positive. They were very responsive to our questions and concerns about our auto transport from Southern California to the PNW. Keep in mind, they are " the middle man" in the transport process. They find the "carrier" company for you. In our case, it was Diesel Auto Express Nationwide Auto Transport. We had our pick up time delayed four times, which was super frustrating. We almost went with another carrier but Sherpa could not find another one, so we roughed it out waiting. Eventually, the car made it up to their yards in Vancouver, Washington to ultimately be transported (final leg of the trip) to our city."

Factors that affect Washington Car Shipping Prices

  • Distance: Washington's location in the Pacific Northwest can affect shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from the East Coast to Washington, will generally be more expensive than shorter routes within the West Coast region.
  • Route: Major interstates like I-5, I-90, and I-82 make shipping to urban areas in Washington more accessible and often less expensive. Rural locations off these main routes may incur higher costs due to additional time and fuel needed.
  • Trailer Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for shipping to Washington. Enclosed trailers, while offering protection from Washington's varied weather conditions, are about 50% more expensive and typically have longer delivery times.
  • Seasonal Factors: Washington's climate can impact shipping costs. Winter snow in the Cascade Mountains might cause delays or require alternate routes. Summer is peak moving season, which can drive up prices due to increased demand.
  • Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, common in Washington for outdoor activities, may cost more to ship due to their weight and size. Compact cars will generally be less expensive to transport.
  • Pickup and Delivery Locations: Shipping to major cities like Seattle or Spokane is typically cheaper than to rural areas. Consider meeting the carrier in a larger town if you're located in a remote part of Washington to potentially reduce costs.
  • Flexibility: Opting for Sherpa's standard five-day pickup window can save you money compared to expedited services. This flexibility allows carriers to optimize their routes across Washington's vast geography.
  • Vehicle Condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship as they require special equipment for loading. Ensure your car is in running condition to avoid additional fees when shipping to or from Washington.

Understanding these factors can help you estimate and potentially reduce your car shipping costs to or from Washington. For a more detailed breakdown of pricing factors, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your shipment at least two weeks in advance. This gives carriers time to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping offers the lowest rates and most flexibility for negotiating prices. While enclosed carriers are necessary for some vehicles, open transport is generally more cost-effective.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff locations: Consult with Sherpa advisers to find convenient locations near major interstates like I-5, I-90, or I-82. This can significantly reduce fuel costs for carriers, potentially lowering your price.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove all personal items from your car before shipping. This reduces weight and eliminates concerns about item safety during transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering flexibility in your pickup and delivery dates and locations can lead to better pricing options. Carriers may offer discounts for shipments that fit well into their existing routes and schedules.
  • Consider seasonal timing: Washington's weather can impact shipping costs. Avoiding peak winter months when mountain passes may be challenging can potentially reduce your expenses.

For those moving to Washington, you can easily order a pass online or at select retail locations.

Washington requires vehicle emissions testing in certain counties. However, as of January 1, 2020, the state has phased out this requirement for most vehicles. Still, it's wise to check with the Department of Ecology for any updates or specific requirements.

When registering your vehicle in Washington, you'll need to visit a vehicle licensing office within 30 days of establishing residency. Bring your out-of-state title, registration, and a completed Vehicle Certificate of Ownership Application. You'll also need to pass a vehicle inspection and pay applicable fees.

For those moving to urban areas like Seattle, be aware of parking regulations. Many neighborhoods require residential parking permits, which you can obtain from the city's transportation department.

When settling in Washington, you'll need to set up utilities. Major providers include:
