- Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
- Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
- Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

What our New Jersey customers say about Sherpa:
“When my daughter moved a couple years ago, we looked through a lot of different transport companies. We remember Sherpa’s having such a great rating, and so my daughter really investigated all their companies. She said, “If they can find a driver, I definitely wanna use Sherpa.” The price was reasonable too. Another place she wanted to use was $2,500. They said it’s gonna cost this amount of dollars to ship the car, and that was exactly what it cost to ship the car, which is the way it should always be. It wasn’t more or less. So, between the price and the quality of the service, we were very pleased.”
“The amount of how much it cost to ship the vehicle changed, but the guaranteed cost to do it didn’t change with Sherpa’s fee. Let’s say it was $1,300. They guaranteed me it was gonna be $1,300, and in the end, it was $1,300, even though the original quote was $925 to ship the vehicle. At the end of the day, it was $1,000 to ship it. Sherpa took the extra $100 out of their profit, their fee, to pay the extra 100 so it only cost me the 1,300. They stood by the agreement saying, “Here’s what it’s gonna cost you. If it changes, here’s how it’s gonna work,” and that’s exactly what happened.”
“One of the best companies out there for sure. Had a great experience with shipping our car from New Jersey all the way to California! The customer representative Ty, who we’ve got to work with, was the most professional and polite, answered every single question we had, was very detailed and clear about the whole process. We also had certain specific requests and had Sherpa team work everything out for us!”

Factors that affect New Jersey Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: New Jersey’s location on the East Coast affects shipping costs. Transporting cars to or from states farther away, like California, will be more expensive than shipping to nearby states like Pennsylvania or New York.
- Route: New Jersey’s extensive highway network, including I-95, I-287, and the New Jersey Turnpike, makes it easier and often cheaper to transport vehicles to and from many areas of the state.
- Season: New Jersey experiences all four seasons, which can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow and ice may increase costs due to potential delays and safety concerns, while summer is typically busier for auto transport, potentially raising prices.
- Transport Type: Open trailers are the most common and cost-effective option for car shipping to or from New Jersey. Enclosed transport, while more expensive, offers extra protection and may be worth considering for high-value vehicles during harsh weather conditions.
- Vehicle Size: Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks will cost more to ship than compact cars due to the space they occupy on the transport truck.
- Pickup and Delivery Locations: Shipping to or from urban areas like Newark or Jersey City is often cheaper than rural locations due to easier access for carriers.
- Timeframe: If you need expedited shipping to or from New Jersey, expect to pay more. Flexible pickup and delivery dates can help reduce costs.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your New Jersey car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping
- Book early: Schedule your New Jersey car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles from the same area.
- Choose open transport: Open carriers are more cost-effective and offer greater flexibility for negotiating lower rates when shipping a car to or from New Jersey.
- Select strategic locations: Discuss with Sherpa Auto Transport advisors about pickup and drop-off points near major interstates like I-95, I-78, or I-287. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
- Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during the auto transport process.
- Be flexible with dates: Offering a range of pickup and delivery dates can help you secure better rates for your New Jersey car shipping needs.
- Consider seasonal factors: New Jersey’s weather can impact car shipping costs. Summer months often see higher demand, so planning your auto transport during off-peak seasons may result in lower prices.

How does New Jersey Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from New Jersey requires careful planning and consideration of the Garden State’s unique characteristics. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth auto transport experience:
- Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you an accurate estimate of costs based on factors such as vehicle type, route, and shipping method.
- Choose your shipping method: Consider New Jersey’s diverse weather conditions when deciding between open or enclosed transport. Enclosed transport offers extra protection from harsh winter weather or potential salt damage near coastal areas.
- Plan your route: New Jersey’s extensive highway network, including I-95, I-78, and the Garden State Parkway, facilitates efficient car transport. Discuss pickup and delivery locations with your carrier, considering traffic patterns in urban areas like Newark or Jersey City.
- Prepare your vehicle: Before shipping your car, wash it thoroughly and document its condition. Remove E-ZPass tags and personal items. In winter, ensure your antifreeze levels are appropriate for New Jersey’s cold temperatures.
- Meet the carrier: At pickup, you or an authorized representative will meet the driver, hand over the keys, and conduct an inspection. Be prepared for potential delays due to New Jersey’s unpredictable traffic, especially near New York City.
- Track your shipment: While your vehicle is in transit, stay informed about its progress. Your auto transport provider should offer regular updates.
- Receive your vehicle: Upon delivery, inspect your car thoroughly before signing the Bill of Lading. Check for any issues that may have occurred during transport, such as salt residue if shipped during winter months.
By following these steps and working with a reliable car shipping service, you can ensure a hassle-free experience when transporting your vehicle to or from the Garden State. For more detailed information on the entire process, check out our comprehensive guide on how to ship a car.
New Jersey Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to or from New Jersey, it’s crucial to be aware of local vehicle requirements and regulations. New Jersey uses E-ZPass for electronic toll collection, so remember to remove or deactivate your transponder before car transport to avoid unexpected charges. The state requires annual vehicle inspections for emissions and safety, so ensure your car is up-to-date before shipping. New Jersey’s vehicle registration process can be completed online or at a Motor Vehicle Commission office, typically requiring proof of insurance, identification, and payment of fees.
For those moving to the Garden State, consider these helpful tips: Set up utilities with providers like PSE&G or JCP&L for electricity, and contact your local municipality for water services. Popular internet providers include Verizon Fios and Xfinity. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll children in local schools. New residents should also obtain a New Jersey driver’s license within 60 days of establishing residency.
If you’re leaving New Jersey, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify your current utility providers. When choosing a car shipping company, consider New Jersey’s unique climate and geography. The state experiences all four seasons, so protect your vehicle accordingly during transport. Major highways like the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway make auto transport convenient, but be prepared for potential traffic in densely populated areas.
Whether you’re moving to enjoy the Jersey Shore or departing for new adventures, New Jersey car shipping services can make your transition smoother. By understanding local regulations and preparing for your move, you’ll ensure a hassle-free experience when shipping a car to or from the Garden State.
New Jersey Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from New Jersey?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from New Jersey. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from New Jersey?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from New Jersey?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to New Jersey?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in New Jersey
When planning car shipping to or from New Jersey, it’s crucial to consider the state’s diverse seasonal weather. New Jersey experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, snow and ice can significantly impact car shipping services. If you’re shipping during this time:
- Remove snow tires or chains before transport, as carriers can’t move vehicles with these attached.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, avoiding steep inclines that could be dangerous in icy conditions.
- Remove any items from your car that could freeze and potentially damage the vehicle during transit.
Summer in New Jersey can bring high temperatures. If you’re shipping a car during warmer months:
- Consider placing a sunshade under the windshield to protect the interior.
- Remove any heat-sensitive items from the car to prevent melting or damage.
Beyond weather, certain times of year see increased demand for New Jersey car shipping:
- Late August to early September and May to June are busy due to college students moving.
- Snowbird season (October to December and April to June) can increase demand as people move between New Jersey and warmer states.
To avoid peak times and potentially save on costs, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after these busy periods. By planning ahead and considering these factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when using a car shipping company for your New Jersey auto transport needs.
Car Shipping for College Students in New Jersey
When considering auto transport to New Jersey for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at universities. Most New Jersey schools require parking permits, often obtained through online registration. For instance, Rutgers University has a tiered system based on student status and campus location. Always check specific campus rules as they vary widely.
Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but it’s not guaranteed. If you’re living in dorms, parking may be limited. Plan ahead and consider if you really need a car on campus. For those who do, investigate long-term storage options for breaks. Some universities provide this service, while others partner with local facilities.
New Jersey winters can be harsh, so prepare your vehicle accordingly. Snow tires are recommended, and don’t forget to winterize your car before the cold sets in. If you’re using a car shipping service to bring your vehicle to New Jersey, ensure it’s ready for the climate change.
Lastly, review your insurance and roadside assistance coverage. Many policies have geographic restrictions, so confirm your protection extends to your new location. This step is crucial whether you’re driving to New Jersey or opting for car transport services. Being prepared will make your college experience smoother and help you avoid unexpected issues with your vehicle while studying in the Garden State.
Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in New Jersey
New Jersey is home to several military installations, including Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, which serves the Air Force, Army, and Navy. For military members relocating to or from New Jersey, understanding the local car shipping and auto transport options is crucial. Most bases offer on-base parking, but it’s advisable to check with your specific unit for availability. Off-base neighborhoods generally have ample street parking, but always verify local regulations.
When shipping a car to New Jersey military bases, consider these tips:
- Vehicle Registration: New Jersey requires all vehicles to be registered within 60 days of establishing residency. Military members may be eligible for exemptions.
- Base Resources: Utilize on-base amenities like the commissary and exchange for cost-effective shopping.
- Transportation Services: Many bases offer shuttle services or have partnerships with local transport companies to help you get around while waiting for your vehicle.
At Sherpa Auto Transport, we understand the unique needs of military personnel. That’s why we offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services. We thank all service members and their families for their dedication and sacrifice. Reviews from our New Jersey Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied New Jersey customers:
“I recently used Sherpa Auto Transport to transport my car from Florida to New Jersey. I was very impressed with the level of service I received. I had a bad experience with a car transporter that took 3 weeks to deliver my daughter’s car to California a few years ago. So I questioned everything Shane told me. He was professional and knowledgeable. He talked me through the process. He made me feel more confident about making this move. They picked the car up on Wednesday afternoon and delivered it to NJ on Friday afternoon in perfect condition. The customer service was also excellent. Brittany called me to again take me through what would happen and reassure me again. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a reliable and professional car transport service. Here are some specific details about the service I received: The pickup and delivery were both on time. My car was carefully loaded and unloaded. The driver was professional and courteous. I was kept updated on the status of my car’s transport. I would definitely use this company again.”
“Your customer service staff was super helpful guiding me thru each step of this process to transport my vehicle from New Jersey to Virginia. The carrier also did a great job delivering the vehicle to my home. Very pleased with the entire process. Thanks to all involved.”
“It was a pleasure to do business with SHERPA, my car was picked up in NJ within the the promised time and arrived at the SC destination on time and in the same condition without any damage or scratches. The driver was very nice and polite. Customer service was flawless, Felicia was wonderful and so nice to deal with and so was everyone else. The price for the transport was fair and there were no surprises or extra charges, I paid exactly what was quoted. This company strives for excellence from the minute you contact them and thru the whole process until your car is safely delivered.”
“Excellent, Efficient service. Sherpa is honest and trustworthy. Everything that they promise in their agreement is delivered with precision This was my first time shipping a vehicle. I was extremely nervous and skeptical. I was given a status report everyday until a carrier was secured. The carrier was secured during the promised timeframe. The estimated delivery time was 2-3 days after pick up. My vehicle was picked up at 9:25 AM in NJ on the 17th and delivered in Iowa 6:25 PM on the 18th. Less than 1 1/2 days in excellent condition! I AM A FAN. I highly recommend Sherpa for your car shipping needs”
“We just had our car shipped from NJ to CA by Sherpa and the transport company they find for us, and it’s a great experience! They are really the BEST from my dealing with the other car shipping companies. Sherpa gave the quote online right away and it was the best price. It made me pause a little but I went ahead with them after reading the other good reviews. They did better than I expected: picked up my car on time, arrived on time or earlier and the drivers are friendly and professional. They also gave $50 rebate on top of the good price and that came quickly! Two little things to note and that’s totally understandable: 1. They could not come to my door with the big truck. 2. The car was dirty from the trip but they will refund you $20 for car wash. Overall, very good experience and I’ll recommend them to my friends!”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in New Jersey, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of New Jersey. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
