Factors that Affect Auto Transport Costs

  • Book Early. We recommend booking car transport at least two weeks out.
  • Be Flexible. Certain days of the week & time of the year can be more expensive.
  • Enclosed auto transport vs open car shipping. Special vehicles require a fully enclosed car shipping trailer. Enclosed trailers offer protection & peace of mind, but are significantly more expensive.
  • Vehicle Size. Full size Pickup Trucks cost more to ship than Compact Cars.
  • Location, Location, Location. For your convenience, we strive to make all shipments door to door. However, if you are in a remote location, consider selecting a location closer to an interstate to help reduce your car shipping cost.

Factors that affect Kentucky Car Shipping Prices

Car Transport Distance
Pickup and Drop Off Location

Vehicle Size
  • Distance and Route: Kentucky’s central location means shipping costs can vary widely. Routes along major interstates like I-65, I-75, and I-64 are typically more affordable than rural areas. Shipping to or from cities like Louisville or Lexington is often cheaper than remote locations in the Appalachian region.
  • Seasonal Factors: Kentucky’s climate can impact car shipping prices. Winter snow in the Bluegrass State might cause delays or require special equipment, potentially increasing costs. Summer is peak season for auto transport, which can also drive up prices.
  • Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle affect shipping costs. A compact car will be cheaper to transport than a large SUV or truck. Kentucky’s horse country means many customers ship trailers or specialty vehicles, which may require custom quotes.
  • Transport Method: Open car transport is the most common and affordable option for shipping to or from Kentucky. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers extra protection for high-value vehicles against Kentucky’s occasional severe weather.
  • Timing and Flexibility: If you’re flexible with your pickup and delivery dates, you may find better rates. Rush orders or specific date requirements typically cost more. Consider Kentucky’s event calendar, as major events like the Kentucky Derby can affect availability and pricing.
  • Vehicle Condition: Operable vehicles are easier and cheaper to ship. If your car doesn’t run, inform your auto transport company, as special equipment may be needed, increasing the cost.

Understanding these factors can help you plan your Kentucky car shipping more effectively. For a detailed breakdown of car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. Tips & Tricks for Saving on Vehicle Shipping

  • Book early: Schedule your Kentucky car shipping at least two weeks in advance. This allows carriers to optimize routes and potentially offer discounts for bundling multiple vehicles.
  • Choose open transport: Open shipping provides the lowest rates and most flexibility for negotiating prices when transporting cars to or from Kentucky.
  • Strategic pickup/dropoff: Consult with Sherpa advisors to find locations near major interstates like I-65, I-75, or I-64. This can significantly reduce fuel costs and overall shipping expenses.
  • Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during Kentucky auto transport.
  • Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can lead to better options and potential savings on your Kentucky car shipping service.
  • Consider seasonality: Kentucky’s climate can affect car shipping rates. Summer months often see higher demand and prices, while winter might offer more competitive rates.
  • Explore multi-car discounts: If you’re shipping multiple vehicles to or from Kentucky, ask about potential savings for transporting them together.

Vehicle Transport Registration

When shipping a car to or from Kentucky, it’s essential to understand the state’s vehicle requirements and regulations. Kentucky doesn’t have a toll system, so there’s no need to worry about removing toll readers. However, the state does require annual vehicle inspections for safety and emissions. New residents must register their vehicles within 15 days of establishing residency.

The vehicle registration process in Kentucky is straightforward. Visit your local County Clerk’s office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and a completed application form. You’ll need to pay registration fees and taxes based on your vehicle’s value. Kentucky doesn’t require special parking passes for residential areas, but check with your new neighborhood for any local regulations.

When moving to Kentucky, setting up utilities is crucial. The state’s primary electricity providers include Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities. For water services, contact your local municipality. Major internet providers in Kentucky include AT&T, Spectrum, and Windstream. Don’t forget to register to vote at your new address and enroll your children in local schools.

If you’re moving away from Kentucky, remember to cancel gym memberships, forward your mail, and notify your current utility providers. When considering car shipping services, keep in mind Kentucky’s climate and road conditions. The state experiences all four seasons, with hot summers and cold winters. Interstates like I-65, I-75, and I-64 are major routes for auto transport in Kentucky.

Kentucky Vehicle Transport FAQs

How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Kentucky?

See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Kentucky. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.

Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Kentucky?

Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.

All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.

How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Kentucky?

The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.

How do I pay for my auto transport to Kentucky?

No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.

We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.

Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.

What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?

Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.

How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?

Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.

What types of vehicles can you transport?

We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Weather Car Shipping Icon

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Kentucky

When planning car shipping to or from Kentucky, it’s crucial to consider the state’s distinct seasonal weather patterns. Kentucky experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.

In winter, Kentucky can face significant snowfall and icy conditions. If you’re shipping a car during this time:

  • Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
  • Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground to prevent slipping.
  • Remove any items that might freeze and potentially damage your vehicle.

During summer, Kentucky can experience high temperatures and humidity. For car transport in these conditions:

  • Place a sunshade under your windshield to protect the interior.
  • Remove heat-sensitive items that could melt or warp.
  • Consider shipping early morning or evening to avoid peak heat.

Beyond weather, timing is crucial for efficient Kentucky car shipping. Be aware of:

  • College move-in/out periods: Cities like Lexington and Louisville see increased demand in August and May.
  • Kentucky Derby: Early May brings a surge in visitors and potential delays.
  • Fall foliage season: October sees increased tourism, potentially affecting transport routes.

To ensure smooth auto transport in Kentucky, consider scheduling your shipment a few weeks before or after these peak times. By planning around Kentucky’s weather and events, you can optimize your car shipping experience and potentially save on costs.

College Students Icon

Car Shipping for College Students in Kentucky

When considering car shipping to Kentucky for college, it’s crucial to understand parking regulations at various universities. At the University of Kentucky, students must register their vehicles and purchase a parking permit. On-campus parking is limited, so plan ahead. Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but always confirm before signing a lease. For University of Louisville students, a similar registration process exists, with different permit options based on your status and needs. Western Kentucky University requires all vehicles on campus to display a valid permit, which can be purchased online or at the parking office. During winter breaks, most Kentucky universities offer extended parking options, but it’s best to check with your specific school. Remember, Kentucky winters can be harsh, so consider winter tires for safety. Before shipping your car to Kentucky, verify that your insurance and roadside assistance coverage extends to your new location. If you’re using a car shipping service to transport your vehicle, ensure they’re familiar with Kentucky car shipping regulations. Lastly, some smaller colleges like Berea College discourage students from bringing cars to campus, promoting a pedestrian-friendly environment. Always research your specific institution’s policies to make informed decisions about auto transport and parking options.

Military Personnel Icon

Vehicle Shipping for Military Members in Kentucky

Kentucky is home to several military installations, including Fort Knox and Fort Campbell. For service members relocating to these bases, understanding the local car shipping and parking situation is crucial. At Fort Knox, on-base parking is available, but space can be limited. Many military members choose to live off-base in nearby communities like Radcliff or Elizabethtown, where parking is generally more accessible. Fort Campbell, straddling the Kentucky-Tennessee border, offers on-base housing with designated parking areas. However, those living off-base in Hopkinsville or Clarksville will find ample parking options.

When shipping a car to Kentucky military bases, it’s important to note that special vehicle registration may be required. Military personnel should check with their base’s transportation office for specific guidelines. Both Fort Knox and Fort Campbell have well-stocked commissaries and exchanges, providing essential resources for service members and their families.

At Sherpa Auto Transport, we understand the unique challenges faced by military families during relocation. That’s why we offer a $50 military discount on our car shipping services to and from Kentucky. We’re committed to making your auto transport experience as smooth as possible and thank you and your family for your service to our nation.

Consumer Affairs
★★★★★

“I hired Sherpa to ship my Car from London Kentucky to land lakes Florida. I could not have hired a more professional Company, as I received my car right on time and free of any blemishes whatsoever. The Sherpa agents/associates were most professional throughout and kept me well informed. I evaluated a number of companies and Sherpa came out on top in many respects. The transporter, while very high quality did fail to give my wife, or myself the delivery BOL, but still a 5 star transporter. I witnessed the loading of my car in London, KY by Sid, and I was most impressed by the care he displayed, not only with my car, but the other cars he removed and reloaded. The 18 wheel rig was immaculate and extremely well maintained.”

Consumer Affairs

“The gal I talked to at Sherpa Auto Transport walked me through the transport and was super nice. The driver was from California, and he was getting back to California. He didn’t know about this Kentucky weather, but everything went well. He picked the car up on Wednesday night. But he had a motorcycle and a Mercedes too. He dropped the motorcycle in Alabama, dropped the Mercedes in Tennessee, and came north on 75 and dropped my car off. I got it on Tuesday morning. He had four more days, but he rolled in here. He was nice and good. I’m 100% satisfied.”

Consumer Affairs

“Our car was picked up in Kentucky on Friday afternoon and delivered in great shape across the country in Idaho on Friday evening of the same week! The driver was friendly and cooperative and the representative from Sherpa was very professional and answered the many questions I had. After reading many bad reviews from so many other companies, I was somewhat worried, but we could not have had a better experience.”

“I was really nervous about having my Mazda CX5 transported from Washington to Kentucky. I did my research and found Sherpa had the best price, guaranteed the final price which made a difference. Ivan who picked my vehicle up was very professional. He worked with me when it was time for delivery. I would definitely recommend Sherpa for your vehicle transported.”

Consumer Affairs

“Signed up for moving a vehicle from Texas to Indiana on a Wednesday evening and vehicle was delivered Sunday afternoon. Transport company was great and Sherpa did a great job keeping me updated. This happened at the same time Arkansas and Kentucky were hit hard from Tornados. Driver said he drove thru and around the destruction aftermath from the Tornados. Would definitely use again.”

What is Car Shipping?

Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Kentucky, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.

About the Car Shipping Industry

Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Kentucky. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.

Fun Facts About Car Shipping

  2. Modern car carriers can transport up to 12 vehicles at a time. This design, which has evolved over decades, helps reduce the number of trips needed, thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  3. Hydraulic systems used in car carriers allow the trailers to be raised or lowered, making it easier and safer to load and unload vehicles. This feature is now standard in many auto transport trucks. [Source: Tempus Logix]
  4. The “head rack” design—which allows an extra car to be transported above the truck’s cab—was first introduced in the 1960s. This innovation maximized the number of vehicles that could be shipped on a single truck without extending its length. [Source: Super Dispatch]
  5. During World War II, specialized military transport trucks were developed to haul heavy vehicles like tanks. These trucks, known as “tank transporters,” could carry loads of up to 100 tons, paving the way for modern heavy-duty transport trucks. [Source: National WWII Museum]
