Factors that affect Connecticut Car Shipping Prices
- Distance: Connecticut’s central location in the Northeast affects shipping costs. Longer distances, such as shipping from Connecticut to the West Coast, generally result in higher prices compared to shorter routes within New England or to neighboring states.
- Route Accessibility: Connecticut’s well-developed highway system, including I-95, I-91, and I-84, makes most areas easily accessible. However, shipping to or from more remote locations off these main routes may increase costs.
- Seasonal Factors: Connecticut’s varied climate can impact car shipping prices. Winter weather, including snow and ice, may lead to higher costs and potential delays, especially from December to March.
- Vehicle Type: The size and weight of your vehicle affect shipping costs. Larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks common in Connecticut’s suburbs may cost more to transport than compact cars.
- Transport Method: Open transport is the most economical option for most Connecticut car shipments. Enclosed transport, while about 50% more expensive, offers additional protection for high-value or classic cars during harsh New England weather.
- Timing: Summer months and January tend to see higher demand for car shipping services in Connecticut, potentially increasing prices. Planning your shipment during off-peak times may result in cost savings.
Understanding these factors can help you plan your Connecticut car shipping more effectively. For more detailed information on car shipping costs, check out our car shipping calculator guide. - Empty your vehicle: Remove personal items to reduce weight and avoid potential liability issues during auto transport.
- Be flexible: Offering date flexibility for pickup and delivery can help you secure better rates for your Connecticut car shipping needs.
- Opt for off-peak seasons: Consider scheduling your auto transport during less busy times, like late fall or early spring, when demand for car shipping services in Connecticut may be lower.

How does Connecticut Car Shipping Work?
Navigating the car shipping process to or from Connecticut requires careful planning and consideration of the state’s unique characteristics. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you seamlessly transport your vehicle:
1. Get an instant quote: Start by obtaining a free online quote from a reputable car shipping company like Sherpa Auto Transport. This will give you an accurate estimate of costs based on factors such as your vehicle type, pickup and delivery locations, and preferred shipping method.
2. Choose your transport method: Consider Connecticut’s weather when deciding between open or enclosed transport. Enclosed transport offers extra protection from New England’s harsh winters and potential road salt damage.
3. Prepare your vehicle: Before shipping your car, wash it thoroughly, document any existing damage, and remove personal items. For Connecticut winters, ensure your antifreeze levels are appropriate. You can find a comprehensive guide on how to ship a car on our website.
4. Plan your route: Familiarize yourself with Connecticut’s major highways like I-95, I-91, and I-84. This knowledge can help you coordinate pickup and delivery locations that are convenient and accessible for large transport trucks.
5. Schedule wisely: Consider Connecticut’s seasons when booking your auto transport. Summer is peak moving season, while winter weather can cause potential delays. Spring and fall often offer more flexible scheduling and competitive pricing.
6. Stay informed: Once your vehicle is in transit, stay in touch with your car shipping service provider for updates. Be prepared for potential weather-related delays, especially during Connecticut’s unpredictable winter months.
By following these steps and working with a reliable car transport company, you can ensure a smooth and stress-free experience when shipping a car to or from the Constitution State.
Connecticut Car Transport: Local Insights and Regulations
When shipping a car to Connecticut or moving within the state, it’s crucial to understand local vehicle requirements and regulations. Connecticut uses E-ZPass for electronic toll collection, so if you’re relocating, remember to update your account or remove the transponder to avoid unexpected charges. The state has strict vehicle inspection laws, requiring emissions testing every two years for most vehicles. When registering your car in Connecticut, you’ll need to provide proof of insurance, a valid out-of-state title, and complete a VIN verification.
For those moving to Connecticut, it’s essential to set up utilities promptly. Eversource and United Illuminating are the primary electricity providers, while water services vary by municipality. Popular internet providers include Xfinity, Frontier, and Cox. Don’t forget to update your voter registration and enroll your children in local schools. The Connecticut State Library system offers free library cards to residents, providing access to a wealth of resources.
If you’re leaving Connecticut, remember to forward your mail, cancel local memberships, and notify your current utility providers. When considering car transport services, keep in mind Connecticut’s weather conditions. The state experiences all four seasons, with snowy winters and humid summers, which can affect auto transport schedules.
Connecticut’s major highways, including I-95, I-91, and I-84, are crucial routes for car shipping companies. These interstates connect major cities like Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport, making it easier for auto transport services to navigate the state. When shipping a car to or from Connecticut, consider seasonal factors like winter storms or summer traffic to coastal areas, which may impact delivery times.
By understanding these local nuances and regulations, you can ensure a smoother transition when moving to or from the Constitution State. Whether you’re using car shipping services or driving yourself, being prepared will make your Connecticut move a success.
Connecticut Vehicle Transport FAQs
How do I prepare my vehicle for transit to or from Connecticut?
See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for details about how to prepare your vehicle to / from Connecticut. In short, you’ll want to remove any toll pass or fragile items, make sure you have a key available to provide the carrier, and remove any interior and exterior accessories that could be damaged in transit.
Is my vehicle insured transporting to or from Connecticut?
Yes, our quotes are all-inclusive. All of our carriers are required to have a minimum of $1,000,000 in liability insurance and $100,000 in cargo insurance. To ship your vehicle, we verify that the carrier’s insurance policy is valid and in good standing for the duration of your shipment.
All contracted carriers also add Sherpa as a Certificate Holder on their insurance policy.
How far out should I schedule my pickup service from Connecticut?
The sooner, the better. We recommend at least two weeks, but it’s ideal to post your shipment as soon as possible so that carriers can bundle your shipment with others in the same location.
How do I pay for my auto transport to Connecticut?
No payment is due at the time of booking. We do require a payment method on file so that it is available to charge once a carrier is secured. We accept all major debit and credit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Discover and American Express. The most convenient option is to pay for your shipment in full by credit card at the time a carrier is secured.
We also allow you to pay for your Initial Payment via credit or debit card and then pay the outstanding balance on delivery day via cash or a certified check made out to the carrier.
Can I pack personal items inside my vehicle?
Your Sherpa shipment includes up to 100 lbs of personal items or household goods stored in the trunk area or secured below the window line. If you are shipping to or from a port or your shipment includes ocean transit, your vehicle must be emptied of all items. Sherpa and your assigned carrier cannot be responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle. See our Vehicle Shipping Tips for more details.
Do I need to be present at both pickup and delivery?
Yes. It is important that you, or another adult that you trust, is there for pickup and delivery of your vehicle. This designated person plays an important role in the shipping process including documenting the state of the vehicle and signing the Bill of Lading, which acts as a receipt of the vehicle’s condition.
What’s the difference between Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport?
Enclosed transport is at least 50% higher than open trailers. The primary reason for choosing enclosed auto transport is when you have a high value vehicle like a classic car or a custom paint job that can’t afford the risk of wayward debris on the road. See our open vs enclosed auto transport guide for more details.
Do you offer Door-To-Door Auto Transport Service?
Door-to-door auto transport service is the epitome of convenience in vehicle shipping. At the time of booking your shipment, we will ask for your preferred pickup and delivery address. As long as it is possible, the assigned carrier will pick up and deliver your vehicle to the addresses you specify. Of course, if there are transportation restrictions or safety challenges the carrier will work with you to arrange an alternative location, such as a nearby gas station or parking lot.
How are you different from other Car Shipping Companies?
Many Auto Transport companies try to tease customers with lower rates, only to surprise you with “hidden costs” later. At Sherpa Auto Transport, we do things differently. We provide one locked-in price upfront and stick to it. If unexpected costs arise, we pay them out of our own pocket. While we may not always be the cheapest option at first glance, our commitment to transparency and reliability offers exceptional value. As a premium service, we ensure an stress-free experience from start to finish.
What types of vehicles can you transport?
We transport sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and motorcycles across the nation, including service to Alaska and Hawaii. At this time, we do not service boats, golf carts, ATVs, or RVs. We can ship both operable and inoperable vehicles so long as the vehicle can roll, brake, and steer, and that you can provide the carrier with a key to the vehicle. We can also ship electric vehicles.

Seasonal Guide to Ship a Car in Connecticut
When planning car shipping to or from Connecticut, it’s crucial to consider the state’s seasonal climate factors. Connecticut experiences all four seasons, each bringing unique challenges for auto transport.
In winter, Connecticut car shipping can be affected by snow and ice. When scheduling your car transport during this season:
- Avoid using snow tire chains, as carriers can’t transport vehicles with them.
- Ensure pickup and drop-off locations are on level ground, not steep inclines, to prevent slipping.
- Remove any items that might freeze and potentially damage your vehicle during transit.
Spring and fall are ideal times for shipping a car to Connecticut, with milder weather conditions. However, be aware of potential rainy periods that might cause slight delays.
Summer car shipping services in Connecticut can be busy due to:
- College students moving in or out of state universities.
- Increased tourism and vacation travel.
To avoid peak times and potentially higher rates, consider scheduling your auto transport a few weeks before or after these busy periods.
When using a car shipping company during warmer months, protect your vehicle by:
- Placing a sunshade under the windshield to reduce interior heat.
- Removing any heat-sensitive items from the car before transport.
By considering these seasonal factors, you can ensure a smoother experience when shipping a car to or from Connecticut. Always consult with your chosen car transport provider for specific advice tailored to your situation and the current weather conditions.
Car Shipping for College Students in Connecticut
When considering car shipping or auto transport to Connecticut for college, it’s crucial to understand each university’s parking policies. At the University of Connecticut, students must register their vehicles and purchase parking permits. On-campus residents have designated lots, while commuters use specific areas. During winter break, UConn offers secure storage options for those using car shipping services to return home.
Yale University in New Haven has limited on-campus parking. Most students rely on public transit or use off-campus lots. If you ship a car to Yale, research nearby garages for long-term parking. At Connecticut College, all students can bring cars, but must register them and display a valid permit.
Remember, Connecticut car shipping should account for weather conditions. Winter tires are recommended from November to April. Before using car transport services, verify your vehicle’s insurance coverage in Connecticut, including roadside assistance. Many car shipping companies offer door-to-door delivery, easing the transition to campus life. By planning ahead and understanding each school’s policies, shipping a car to Connecticut for college can be a smooth process.

The surrounding neighborhoods in Groton generally offer ample street parking, but always verify local regulations.

Reviews from our Connecticut Customers
We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, as evidenced by our 4.9 rating with over 8,000 reviews. Here are a few more reviews from satisfied Connecticut customers:
“I was having my car transported from Florida to Connecticut last month. From the time that I contacted Sherpa, I was met with professionalism, competence and complete assurance that they would find a transporter to fulfill my request. And that is what they did. Once they took the initial deposit, within a day they provided me with contact information for my transporter, Floridian Auto Transport (who also gave five star service). The transporter contacted me, picked up my car on schedule and delivered it to me in Connecticut within the window that it promised. I would highly recommend Sherpa to set up any auto transport needs and if I should have the need again, I will definitely contact them. Great service! Sandra”
“We contracted with Sherpa to arrange transport of an automobile we purchased from our daughter and son-in-law in Connecticut to our home near Boulder, Colorado. Sherpa notified us that it had found a transporter, that the price would be about $200 higher than its estimate, and that Sherpa would cover the difference–so we paid exactly what Sherpa had promised. They were good in communicating each step of the process. The transporter they engaged similarly kept in touch with us, which was important for a multi-day trip, and we picked up our car when promised with no difficulties. I wouldn`t hesitate to recommend Sherpa Auto Transport.”
“So glad I chose Sherpa, I had already lost money from another company, so I was nervous on who I should go with and when I called they were so confident that I was making a good decision with them and they were right! I happened to be in AZ the day the truck was picked up and meet the driver. He explained everything to me and said I will see you in CT in 4 days and he was not kidding. The truck was delivered and it was perfect as it was when he loaded it up! Thanks again everyone from Sherpa!!”
“It was first time shipping car cross country. Darren was very patient and responded promptly to all my questions. I used an AirTag to track the car’s journey which worked well. Just know that there is a delay on updating and doesn’t work in dead zones. Car made it out to Oregon from CT in 5 days and was delivered on time and as close as they could get to the apartment and in good shape. I would recommend that if you have questions about the 100lbs of stuff in the vehicle and making sure it is under the window line- just take pics and share with your agent and they will give you suggestions. Didn’t have any problems. Will definitely use Sherpa again. Thanks again for you support and professionalism and customer service”
“My mother moved into assisted living in Florida and I had to get her car here to Connecticut. I read a lot about scams and agonized about what company to call. Sherpa was highly recommended to me and I was really pleased how well it went. Sherpa stayed in contact with me and the driver was amazing and professional. I got the car without any problems or demands for extra money. I highly recommend them, they did everything they promised.”

What is Car Shipping?
Car shipping, also known as auto transport or vehicle transport, is a specialized service provided by car shipping companies to move vehicles from one location to another. Whether you’re buying or selling a car online, relocating to a new home in Connecticut, or needing to transport a vehicle abroad, car shipping companies have the expertise and equipment to handle the job safely and efficiently. These companies use specialized carriers and trailers to ensure your vehicle is transported securely, giving you peace of mind throughout the process.
About the Car Shipping Industry
Car shipping is a fascinating industry. There are Carriers – the businesses that pickup and transport vehicles – and there are Brokers – the businesses that help Carriers source their customers. Carriers are primarily mom & pop small businesses who own and operate their trucks and trailers – many of whom own and operate their businesses out of Connecticut. This means there are thousands of carriers and this fragmentation creates a need for centralization. That’s why Carriers rely on Brokers – like Sherpa – to help optimize their loads and source business for them. Sherpa vets Carriers and has a strict list of requirements for any Carrier looking to do business with Sherpa Auto Transport.
